All of them could have gone to better teams as well, they didn't. (If wanting to win was of the utmost priority)

It's odd to superimpose the rhetoric of exceptions (trade demands) onto the whole. It's similar to thinking Pettersson was going to Tkachuk out of here when what Tkachuk did was exceptional... And then Pettersson re-signs for 8 years...

I guess...I wouldn't consider it a giant hole, but it is a hole....not sure you need a dedicated RH center to fill that hole....that was the nice thing about Lindholm, a RH guy who can slot on either the wing or center, win some draws and can play up and down the lineup. For a dedicated center, who does he replace? Likely won't be EP, Blueger or Miller though...ideally another RH winger for EP who can win draws.

Bumping Bluegar down to the 4th line would be good. Center depth > wing depth.

I would. They went into the season with two top 4 defenceman (I suppose you could make the argument for Soucy) in a year they thought they were a contender.

They thought they could teach a bunch of bottom pair Dmen Tocchet hockey and it has blown up in their face. To bank on not having any injuries is incredibly foolish.

We had armchair GMs in here screaming to go grab a guy like Kovacevic, who ended up in NJ for a 2026 4th and is one of the best value defenceman in the league, playing top 4 minutes on a top team.

They have a path to get out of it and save the season, but it is as narrow as ever.

Johnston himself is arguably worth more than EP after his strong playoff performance.

I doubt this.

One hot playoff run doesn't change the fact that Johnston is a ~65 point 2nd line C so far in his (albeit young) career which is like Pettersson's absolute floor.

Maybe if the Stars can get him signed for like 8x8 and he turns into a PPG two-way center you can argue he offers better value when comparing cap hits but in a vacuum it's not close right now.

Outside of Hughes and Demko, every contract on this team now has been signed or traded for by this management team.

While they deserved an A+ last year for finding 3 guys to play behind Hughes/Hronek/Myers, they equally deserve an F this year for failing to address the blue line in any adequate way.

It’s crazy to me to hear Alvin go off on Petey for the lack of prep while also not blaming themselves for not improving the blue line. You can’t have public accountability in one department without the other.

Last season I thought GM Allvin did a admirable job upgrading the roster to be a more well rounded team better suited for the playoffs. Bringing in Zadorov for picks was a fantastic trade. Dishing off Kuzmenko's brutal contract with picks and prospects for Elias Lindholm was well worth the gamble to make the Canucks a potential contender.
I was a little disappointed with Allvin at last years trade deadline because I thought he failed to bring in the extra depth to put the Canucks over the top. I thought Rutherford and Allvin put too many eggs in the Guentzel basket, missing out on other opportunities. Although they did make their trades early, I will give them a pass. Kovacevic went for dirt cheap and I thought that was a huge miss since how cheap he was traded for.
The Elias Pettersson contract saga became a bit of a gong show. Allvin and Co were obviously getting a little worried about the direction of their star player and forced a ultimatum on Pettersson to sign or he will be traded. Not only could the contract negotiations could have waited until the end of the season, but if the Canucks waited they could of possibly saved money on the 11.6 million dollar contract since Pettersson didn't play to expectations. This whole saga seemed poorly played and very desperate on managements behalf.
Now move to July 1st free agency. Allvin makes two solid forward signings in Jake Debrusk and Kiefer Sherwood. Two players who quickly found a role on this team. Amazing. Although Heinen is very average he is not a liability.
Ian Cole gets dropped without thinking twice about wtf. Leader in the lockeroom with Cup experience. The Canucks are looking lost without him.
Allvin has multiple negotiations with Zadorov. After a successful playoffs and becoming a team leader, Allvin continues to lowball the big Z to which caused him to be pissed off and stall negotiations. Finally when Allvin comes to his senses and will give Zadorov what he originally wanted, Zadorov tells him too late I'm signing in Boston. All for a extra 200k and a extra year. Horrible loss.
So what makes up for losing Zadorov, Cole, and potential signings like Alex Carrier. Allvin throws 2 million for 2 years at Desharnais who wasn't even dressed for the finals. Adds Forbort for 900,000 more than he's actually worth. Another defenseman who wasn't playing much for Boston.
Signs chaos giraffe who played his best season in 5 years in Vancouver, on a contract year. Thinking it would be a value deal since he's been paid 6 million for 5 years, I thought 2.5 would do it. Nope 3. I lost my shit on this signing since I knew it was a nail in the coffin for Zadorov.
Allvin goes into the 24/25 season thinking the defense core of Hughes/Hronek/Myers/Soucy/Desharnais/Forbort/Juulsen thinking everything is okay.
Allvin does a last minute signing of Kevin Lankinen for rupees. Outstanding deal.

The season sucks so far. Injuries galore to all of our top players. Hughes and Hronek get injured and it's a disaster of a season due to brutal defense.
The two star centerman apparently hate eachother and the rift cannot be fixed. Something Zadorov and Cole probably could have helped with putting a end to. I firmly believe this all should of been dealt with a long time a go and Allvin and Rutherford should of been involved and put a stop to this a long time a go. Nipped it in the butt.
Allvin calls out Pettersson saying he's not up to par. Which is the truth but the star player is a introvert and it might not be the way to deal with it. Thank goodness he taken it with a positive response.

This writeup is a complete mess and hard to read, sorry about that, but I am going through the highs and lows from this season to last. If I were to grade Allvin last season I would easily give him a (A) letter grade. This year going into the season with this defense that has very little depth, I would give Allvin a (C+). Lankinen, Debrusk and Sherwood saved him from a much lower grade, but going into this season with this defense in unacceptable.

Couple thoughts:

1. JT Miller, taken lots of slack the last few weeks. Was an absolute beast tonight. Could see him being a game changer for a playoff team if acquired.

2. Management team not addressing the D-core - clearly made a mistake, and realizes it. Should have probably kept Cole and grabbed another top 4 guy.

Hopefully they learn from it and it’s never an issue again.

3. Trade deadline: 4 Nation is in Feb. Teams will have less than 5 weeks once the tournament is done to wheel and deal. I don’t think this team should be waiting around. They are clearly not a cup contender.

This team should resign Lankinen, Demko likely struggles to stay healthy moving forward. I’m fine to move Boeser and change the core. Like the player and person but I’m okay with it.

4. Forbort got a bit banged up but came back. Wouldn’t shock me if he go on the IR tomorrow.

5. Hoglander - terrible last min penalty but has been playing so much better. Hope he scores 1 soon. If they can move him I think he could flourish in the right spot.

Here's the comprehensive list of players I would have picked ahead of Pod, in order:

1. Victor Soderstrom
2. Matt Boldy
3. Cole Caufield

I felt a teensy bit more qualified that year to make judgments because I got to see the WJC up close the way I like. No cameras, I control what I see.

Podkolzin always seemed like one of those Virtanen-type tweeners, which is why I thought he was a low-ceiling, high-floor player. But he's the guy coaches will throw in every situation. That's not the greatest thing for young players. I used to be "throw them back out!" but that only encourages the same habits.

Like, the Russian coaches really did a number on this poor kid. He's got all the talent in the world, and keeps getting inconsistent instruction because no one knows how to harness that - least of it, himself. That's why I am a bit... not loathe, but reticent to draft Russians. Their coaching style is so brutal and they all think they are Tikhonov incarnate. So if you can succeed with that kind of ego, you should be good anywhere. But Vasili hasn't as JT would say "got it" yet.

And I really don't mean to paint the wrong picture. I could be dead f***ing wrong for all I know.

You wanna know what the difference between Vasili Podkolzin and Rick Nash is? Because the answer is so simple you'll f***ing laugh at me. Functionally, it's the same hockey player.

So, no. I wasn't happy we traded Podkolzin to the Oilers. I am happy we traded him though, there's nothing left from him to learn here. Moss don't grow on a rolling stone and such.

If rumors are true, that the Islanders are actually shopping Noah Dobson, then I'd be sorely tempted to do it, even if it costs them J.T. Miller.

It's probably an 'off-season' deal, but if the Canucks could acquire Dobson and maybe another pick from the Islanders for Miller, it would set up their blueline for the next eight years.

Their right side d-men would be Hronek, Dobson and Wilander, and with Hughes on the left side, it goes from being a blueline black hole top potentially one of the top units in the Western Conference.

And if even one of Pettersson II, Mynio or Kudryavtsev could step up than it would be a total blueline makeover. But failing that, at the very least they'd be able to consign the likes of Soucy, the Chaos Giraffe, Juulsen and Desharnais to the bottom of the depth chart. So far this year, they're 10-minute a night d-men at best.

One better and one about the same, I guess, and I would take that. Right now, the gap between Myers and the three spare parts is too wide and if the second and inferior of the two added D is like a Myers, it could work. But I don't see how they pull it off, it appears they've cooked themselves.

I think the deal would look more like Miller+ rather than Dobson+. This is all moot though, no way horvat is putting in a good word for Miller with management.

Not a popular opinion because Garland is the pulse on this team most nights, but I wonder if Allvin made him available would Buffalo be more inclined to trade Byram to Vancouver? Add in the necessary assets to even the deal, would Buffalo be down with adding the seasoned vet. Buffalo is 6 hours away from his childhood hometown in Massachusetts.

This team is so brutal defensively that I am considering trading fan favorites.

The Sabres are the only team with less regulation wins since Hronek went down. Most OT points with 6 though. They aren't far away from figuring it out. Can't find ways to win but are now finding ways to lose. Haha
