I still think you explore hockey trades.

Team needs another W to play in the Top 6 as well as atleast another Top 4 dman.

I’m reluctant to trade the 1st but still open in the right deal.

Buffalo is a shitstorm and has some nice younger W who could make sense given they can’t keep them all.

Top 4 UFA dman options (Dumoulin, Pettersson) still remain but likely takes to the TDL to be moved.

The biggest consideration is just pure health. Team has had a tough go since the start and will continue to have a tough go the whole season.

January will be a huge barometer as it’s a tough schedule.

But this team is like a box of chocolates in their play. You never know what you’re gonna get.

At the start of the year if you told me this team would be without Demko for over 2 months, Miller for a month, Hronek for 2 months, and Hughes, Pettersson and Boeser for a handful of consecutive games, and be in a WC spot halfway through the season, I’d take it.

That said, even with the injuries this team has some serious flaws that need to be addressed.

EP for Powers with 30% retention, Cozen, Samuelsson with 20% retention, Benson, 2025 1rst, 2026 1rst and 2025 2nd. Fantasy but not trolling :D :D ;)
Why is Buffalo retaining on Power and Samuelsson but the Canucks aren’t on Pettersson? Lol

I still hope Soucy can be that complementary #4 defenseman. You just can't ask him to lead a pair for 20+ minutes night-in, night-out, especially not with Myers/Forbort/Desharnais/whoever. I would cross my fingers and maybe give Soucy-Hronek an extended try when he returns.

Lankinen has saved their bacon.

IMO, he’s the primary reason for them even being where they are given the injuries to Demko and Silovs not being ready for a FT step up into the NHL.

Otherwise, you’re looking straight down the barrel of a lost season.

Some of the flaws could be fixed in season but others cannot. There’s no way I can see the defense being completely fixed in season.

But trading for a Top 4 dman, getting Hronek back and repositioning the dmen into places more accustomed to what they should be in will go along way.

Will be interesting to see what happens over the next month or two until the TDL.

For sure. A big question to me is coaching and systems. Because last year, while obvious a very good year, started out much better than it ended and Tochett explicitly recognized that he need to find a way to open up the system to increase our ability to create scoring chances off the rush. This was the goal going into this season. But obviously with roster construction and injuries, it’s hard to evaluate Tochett on this, and I think he kind of gets a pass.

But I think, with that said, at some point we need to see more offense generation out of Tocchet’s system as I just don’t think we are getting enough to truly be successful.

What was Byram being called a couple years ago? I can't remember. You have to refresh that for me.
something like this yrs ago

"Multiple reports have said that Byram has suffered three concussions since making his NHL debut a year ago."

AND after coming back

The fourth overall pick by the Avalanche in 2019 has already suffered such severe concussion symptoms that at one point, he questioned whether he could continue playing hockey. Now after taking a big hit into the boards in preseason, concern for the young player is high once again.
Byram has missed a significant amount of games to this point in his three-season career, included in that taking a personal leave of absence to deal with lingering concussion symptoms.

I feel for the kid but this a serious issue that will linger his whole career, As bad as it sounds he is damaged goods and is a "buyer beware" player. Good/great when there but for how long? Now if the Canucks paired him say Zadorov .....

Kevin Blankinen indeed saved their bacon, their eggs, their toast and the whole breakfast.

And I will blame Shorthouse forever because he put that lame ass nickname out there, and now I cannot get it out of my head.

Buffalo wouldn't. It was baiting the poster that just said no without any content. I was trying to see if the poster was just a troll or fanatic.
Powers, Cozens, Benson two 1rst's. And maybe a bit more if Hoglander was included.

I did say I thought Demko would be out until January as that was the time line for a hip procedure.

I also guessed they would end up like the 2016 season. At this point in that season they were in the playoffs and 3rd in the division with 44 points but ended up 30th in the league, I guessed this time it would be 26th. I posted it and it will stick to me like a bad smell if I am really wrong. I was guessing in September or early October before the season start. Looking at the schedule, Demko's injury, EP's final 40 games or so, anticipation of a slight Miller decline, mostly the lack of defence and the number of new players eliminating the identity, lack of cap space and cohesiveness of the team. The EP, JTM stuff erupting was not anticipated as it had been there for years already. I did wonder whether Tocchet's voice would be tuned out due to his message being so limited. I certainly got tired of hearing "staples".

No other content is needed other than no.

There’s no fit with Buffalo in any capacity.

None of the proposals make sense.

Some guys good at move puck, some guys good at stay home.

Need both to make a proper pair.

I think it’s a legitimately insane take that you can have a player dominate 25 of the hardest minutes possible but wouldn’t perform well in 20 minutes with an NHL partner because they’re “fibre”. Like mensa-level overthinking.

He's quite literally not the player you think he is, in my opinion based on what he's shown. It's 3 months of fantastic hockey, and a lot more inconsistency. Making an evaluation based on the facts does not qualify as overthinking to me.

I would appreciate if you don't try to overthink my own overthinking. It's not good for anyone.

He's playing with a Norris trophy winning defenseman who is dominant at both ends of the ice...this is quite the opposite of "mensa level overthinking". lol

Move Cozens and they need a center, a fit there.
Did you not know about Pegula?
Eichel trade?
Did that make sense?

They need something to sell tickets, they still have lots of prospects.
EP fills both spots, fan resurgence, marketing and a star player. Fans would look upon a trade for him as a BIG positive especially if they are listening to their Norris trophy candidate Dhalin who they just signed to his big contract.

Pettersson is the best fit for Buffalo at this time in every area. The cost of not doing it could be incalculable. It is a win, win for both sides considering the Vancouver stuff.

Too bad Miller would not fill that role but he also has a clause and I doubt he waves to go to another "hope" team.

Hughes’s play has been more of the difference maker than Lankinen imo but that’s not taking anything away from Lankinen. I mean it kinda is but right now I have this urge, an obligation, to call out any sort of Hughes slandering so you can understand me here if I say you’re an idiot if you think Hughes isn’t this teams MVP.

Yes and no.

If the team is consistently letting in 4-5 goals a game, it doesn’t matter what Hughes does.

Look at the difference when Silovs was in net compared to Lankinen. It was almost a guaranteed L.

They can share the MVP.

Can you imagine Silovs playing 30 games this year?

We would have 5 wins.

What are the facts?

They're not getting a hockey deal for a pending UFA. You're getting rental prices.

In other words, we're getting say, Minnesota's 3-4th best prospect and a 1st or something along those lines. Nobody is trading us a top four defenseman or an equivalent but younger forward.
Unless it's rental for rental that they think they can re-sign.
