Meh. In a rising cap + his unique traits, I don’t think it’ll age badly at all. As long as he’s healthy, I think the contract will age just fine. There will 100% be takers if Zadorov ever gets shopped. Hes about maybe $1.2M overpaid at most.

We should’ve never let him go.
It was a situation where he fit in particularly well in this system, so he was worth keeping.

A lot of focus on Pettersson and Miller, and it's well deserved, but there's some kind of funk around the team when you look at the lack of production from Garland, boeser, etc as well.

Giving Hughes the C was the right move. How would it look if we traded or let walk Miller and his 100 points and stripped Horvat of the C but kept him around
hindsight 20/20. but horvat was too "nice of a guy" he didnt really stand up to teammates as much, on numerous occasions. i remember garland getting belted by a player oel came in to defend while he watched. garland got bullied again by a tampa player a few years ago same thing just watched. miller at least would drop the gloves to protect his teammates hes done it so many times.

For reference, here's all the best defenceman that changes teams this off-season:

Brady Skjei (American only played in the East)
Oliver Ekman-Larsen (obviously not coming back)
Nikita Zadorov
Sean Walker (American only played in the East)
Joel Edmundson (contract widely panned)
Matt Roy (American expected to stay in the USA)
Brett Pesce (American only played in the East)
Brandon Montour (powerplay guy)
Alexandre Carrier

Traded:
Chris Tanev
Ryan McDonagh
Jake Walman
J.J. Moser for Mikhail Sergachev
John Marino
Jonathan Kovacevic
Jacon Chychrun for Nick Jensen
Brian Dumoulin
Cody Ceci for Ty Emberson

So I get why they gambled. It hasn’t worked out and, I suspect, has lead to other issues getting magnified.
john marino would have been a nice pickup for that 2nd pairing slot. dont resign myers, go for somebody else. like tanev.. or a montour.

Good stuff here.
Jesus Christ save me from the virtue signalling media (and I usually hate when people say 'virtue signalling').

"People are out there struggling, scraping by, and here we are, champions of the dispossessed. Speaking truth to power by whinging about high school drama...you know, like a martyr".

I'm not disagreeing that something is incoherent in Canucks land. To have Hughes and Tocchet basically acknowledge something, and then Miller and Pettersson deny it is strange P.R.

And the team doesn't look very good. But we're also playing kitty-bar the door, low event, hockey somewhat by design to protect the fact that we have a stellar #1 D, a decent #4, a #5 who is in over his head, and bunch of #7 D playing. You can't win when your D is this bad and this poor at moving the puck at the rate that we expect based on what they did last year.

There's also the thing where a lot of sports is psychological. So like part of the Cubs 108 year curse was surely related to the fact that any time the team did anything you had a dozen people basically saying, 'you're gonna blow it, you know you're gonna blow it, right?'

And so it goes where we are struggling and there probably is somewhat of a rift. But then you have the media turning every single loss into proof that the team is f***ed, Miller hates Christmas and Petey hates puppies. That kind of psychological load is quite toxic. A team in a better place psychologically can galvanize around preventing that from infecting their collective psyches. But our team isn't strong right now.

But there's few things I loathe more than breathless naval gazing from sports writers.

There is a nobility and deep importance to journalism. As in, political journalism, those who hold the elites of various spheres to account.

But sports journalism, particularly in this clickbaity day and age? f*** right off with the aggrandizing.

I think a big problem with our media is that our team organizationally isn't even close to as leaky as the Benning regime was.

Like how often does Drance, or Kuzma, or anyone else leak something that sounds legitimate and/or insightful?

They don't. So they sell drama. It's exhausting, tedious, and deleterious.

Miller & Pettersson
  • Friedman isn’t allowed to talk about the Canucks until January 23rd because of how responsible he is for the discourse; takes effect immediately if he finishes the next segment
  • Wants to present a solution that works for everyone involved
  • Lecavalier and Tortorella in Tampa Bay had a big problem with each other and the GM, Jay Feaster, publicly said he wasn’t moving either
  • Might have been different if Tampa Bay were in Canada
  • Thinks about this when situations appear to going sideways
  • There is an opportunity for Canucks’ management to do something like that
  • When Miller took his break, teams called asked about his availability; Canucks told them they don’t want to trade Miller
  • Could have traded Pettersson last season and didn’t
  • Canucks believe they are a better team with both players
  • Very hard to win a trade when trading either of those players
  • Last season, when everyone was pulling in the same direction they were formidable
  • If Friedman was in-charge, he would publicly declare that no one is going anywhere
  • Hughes and Tocchet faced the media and “delivered” even though this isn’t really about them
  • Can’t call hockey players boring and then rip them when they show their true feelings; so he has no issue with Pettersson’s reaction to the questions in the post-game media
  • Thought Miller, after Sunday’s practice, was right on-brand; was a good sign
  • If he were the Canucks, would say they are no longer answers any questions about this anymore; they’ve already addressed it and will not give “anymore air to it”
  • Doesn’t think the difference in comments between Tocchet & Hughes and Petterson & Miller represents a disconnect
  • This whole thing has worn on people
  • It’s pretty obvious that they don’t like this topic
  • No benefit to anyone in the organization answering questions on it anymore
  • Understands why Pettersson stormed off
  • Hughes has really worked behind the scenes on this
  • If you asked Hughes about what they should do management would get a completely honest answer
  • Has got a few DMs from people telling him to “lay off this one” in reference to this story
  • A lot people in the USA are very happy they don’t have to deal with Canadian hockey media
  • Someone said to him that they wouldn’t be surprised if keeping Miller & Pettersson on separate powerplays was a Tocchet attempt to show them that this is crazy
  • Friedman said at the beginning of the year, the Canucks can win the Stanley Cup; plenty of time to sort themselves out

If Matthews is injured and needs surgery I wonder if Knies ++ could be on the table for one of our C

What pitiful little respect I still have for MSM is eroded everyday.

Miller & Pettersson
  • Doesn’t think it’s deep enough that you need to keep one or another
  • Also doesn’t think the tension between them is anything new
  • Have been teammates since the 2019-20 season
  • Is in regular communication with a tonne of people within the Canucks organization, there isn’t one new event that happened between the two players
  • “What are we doing here? What are we talking about?”
  • Doesn’t understand why this has spiraled out of control other than the explanation that this is the Vancouver market
  • Hasn’t been pleasant at all times
  • Miller can wear on teammates but it comes from his drive to win; one of the most competitive “freaks” (positive) in the league
  • Pettersson is more introverted; he’s sarcastic and that can be grating
  • Pettersson can be really sensitive and takes criticism to heart
  • Have coexisted in the same world for a while
  • Probably hearing about it because the Canucks season has been inconsistent and everyone wants to figure out why Miller took a leave of absence
  • Not saying it is a non-story but doesn’t see anything new
  • There’s always some kind of friction on every team in the league
Trading Pettersson
  • Would have to consider trading Pettersson, not because of his personality but because of his play
  • Pettersson is not nearly as productive as he needs to be
  • Eye-test, he’s played worse than his point production indicates
  • Canucks need him to be a play driver
  • If an offer were to pop-up they would need to consider it but not because him and Pettersson are at odds

Vancouver media is sooo trash. Its almost a version of TMZ. They just try to keep beating the same dead horse over and over again. People tune them out, then they wonder why Bell and TSn and Sportsnet have them as first in line when trying to trim the fat off the payroll.

Its Pros vs Ametuer when you compare Vancouver media opposed to a big city Market like LA or NEW York or Chicago when it comes to medica content. Vancouver is soooo far behind.

I have heard this a couple places, but it ignores the fact most of the reports that caused the stir came from out-of-market ... I'm looking at you Elliotte Friedman, Spittin' Chiclets, and Andy Strickland.

What does this mean? Like he has some juicy news but someone told him he is not allowed to share until Jan 23? Or was it a joke?

I still think Bowen Byram is our #1 target. We were probably looking at a package for Byram and Greenway but now Greenway is out long term with a major injury. ( i think we go after Greenway in free agency)

Maybe Byram and Zucker now.

One thing about the make-up of our team is we are sooo perimeter based. Debrusk and Joshua are probably the only players i can think off that lives around the crease.

Zucker is that drive hard to the blue type that i think we need or a player with that style. Another name that plays that style is Kreider.

I've posted elsewhere but I'll repeat it here too.

Allvin and Rutherford aren't getting nearly enough criticism for how poorly they handled the off season in terms of defense. Yes, Sherwood, DeBrusk and Lankinen have all been great additions but the fact we're deploying five guys who wouldn't play above 4th on a good day, and are better served on the third pairing or a 7th man rotation is inexcusable.

I just don't know how you look at Soucy, who's been a career bottom pair guy until last season, and Myers who literally only played well his first season here and his sixth and think, "oh, they'll definitely repeat that performance." Or how they seemingly thought Juulsen would be remotely consistent.

And don't even get me started of Desharnais' asinine contract.

Just going to put this out there. If we didn't sign Forbort and Desharnais, we could fit Tanev at his exact contract. Not saying that's what we should have done but it just highlights how much better our defense could have been with similar money.

I think a lot of fans completely mislead themselves after last season. We had a good year but our team make-up was fundamentally flawed with very little cap space to upgrade this season. Plus the ugly OEL hits coming up in the next two years. As such, and I agree with the direction, they completely focused on the forwards and hoped a patchwork D could keep the team afloat until upgrades could be found.

Personally, I was totally prepared for the team and the D to struggle this season. With Willander coming it didn't make sense to go sign a big money RD, or a big money 3rd pairing LD, ala Zadorov. This was always a long term plan to address the D properly, not blow our wad on some expensive longer contract temporary fill ins concentrated to compete this season while screwing the team cap wise moving forward. The contracts they signed are very short term and give them quite a bit of flexibility to fix the D once and for all.

I'm convinced this shit defense is the real underlying issue with the entire team, and this whole dressing-room drama crap is window dressing.

Yeah I was going to post similar. Agree the D needs to be addressed this year or next off season. Also, this while Petey Miller thing seems made up by media and fans. JT said himself there is no issue ... but of course no one believes anything anyone says anymore.

The questions from the local media aren't the problem. The players & team have not been in alignment in how they've answered questions about it, which just fans the flames. Everyone could've easily come out and said "no issue," or "there's an issue, we're working on it," etc. etc. - but they didn't. Hughes & Tocchet said one thting, Petey & Miller another.

Regardless, both these guys can put this to bed by just playing better. The blueline is a mess, but you'd hope your 20 million investment in your top 2 centers could help overcome it.

Anything systems related is just nonsense - these two guys played in the exact same system last year. A slight drop off is fine given the blueline, but turning into pumpkins offensively is crazy. Teddy bleeping Blueger has as many goals at ES as Miller & Petey COMBINED. That'ts not a winning formula.

They have about 10-15 games to figure this out before management has to make some tough decisions on the future direction of the team.
