They're still not favoured against the best in the West, even with a decent defense imo.

They showed the promise of taking steps forward. Incrementally improving. Getting wins at the margins. Had that continued, then maybe they get to an even bet with the best, but they weren't there yet.

To me, what is happening now is what should have happened since the beginning. They're just forced to realize it now.
I always thought that was the right idea but I didn’t expect them to be able to cobble together so much talent through UFA at such a good price.

With one more quality defender I think this is probably a top 6-8 team. With just one of Pettersson, Miller or Demko playing up their usual level on top of that they’d likely have a real shot at the cup.

McDavid & Garland Dust-up
  • Hearings will be on Monday afternoon
  • Garland deserved somewhere between 1-8 penalties during the sequence; doesn’t think that a penalty would have been a good thing for the Oilers but a player he talked to disagreed and might have preferred to go 6-on-4
  • Can’t look at that one particular play in isolation; mentions McDavid took a slew foot from Adrian Kempe and believes McDavid thinks he’s going to get clipped by Marcus Johansson
  • Mentions that when you guess what other people are thinking, you are putting your own biases in it
  • Chelios once told Friedman that “Every now and then, I can do something that will remind I can still do it” and this reminds him of that quote
  • No doubt the Oilers organization are lobbying on McDavid’s behalf behind-the-scenes but there are also people that have no problem with him “burying his fangs every once in a while”
  • Myers might get more because he has been suspended more
  • Everyone gets the repeat offender wrong; it only has to do with the size of your fine; if you’ve been fined 18-months prior, you get fined per day instead of per game
  • CBA says you can look at someone’s suspension history
Miller
  • Canucks made a real effort to get a trade complete
  • Had heard that Miller asked for a trade and then said to get him out of Vancouver but also was told that this wasn’t true by multiple people
  • There was a point on Friday where Miller to the Rangers was close and Miller was told it was close
  • Not sure when the trade fell apart but after the morning skate on Saturday there was no inclination that Miller wasn’t going to play
  • Had something going with the Rangers and it fell apart; doesn’t think Miller vetoed it
  • Any time a team goes to a player or agent, the team thinks its close and several people told Friedman he thinks it was close
  • Doesn’t think it was mika Zibanejad vetoing it; had come up a long time ago and he doesn’t interest the Canucks
  • Does not think Braden Schneider was involved; Canucks have asked several times before and just can’t get him
  • Doesn’t think it was Alexis Lafreniere
  • Simply a situation where the Canucks wanted to make a trade and didn’t get done for reasons Friedman can’t confirm yet
  • A trade with the Rangers might not be dead but a trade is not imminent
  • Lot of speculation about the Devils but they can’t acquire Miller without roster surgery
  • Rangers can get Miller at his full contract
  • Not convinced it’s Dallas
  • Thinks there’s another team out there that we’re not seeing yet
  • Wonders about the Hurricanes; makes some sense to him and doesn’t know for sure
  • As of Sunday night, we’re not as close as we were on Friday
  • Everyone was hopeful that it was going to get done on Friday or Saturday
Canucks Note to the League
  • On Tuesday, the Canucks sent out a note to all teams reminding them that they don’t have permission to talk to their players
  • Canucks thought someone was being tampered with
  • Only some teams, that were reasonable felt Miller would waive for, had permission to talk; Rangers were one team and thinks there are more
Pettersson
  • He told the Canucks he wants to stay
  • Talks around him have cooled
  • Not sure if it was Pettersson or his representatives but it has been communicated he wants to stay
Salary Cap
  • Revenues are so strong that the 6% holdback for players is going down to 0%
  • Players and teams have been “screaming for guidance” on where the cap will be at
  • Heard that there will be an announcement before the trade deadline
  • Teams, players, and agents want to know significantly before the TDL
  • Won’t be too long before we know next year’s cap number
  • Might know the cap for a couple of years into the future as well

The player in question is from Burnsville, Minnesota and has a wonderful head full of hair.

The team that is tampering is notorious for being Wild.

This is critical.

Will greatly impact discussions with Lankinen and Boeser.

By the TDL is way too late. Needs to be well before so everyone can plan accordingly.

Also nobody expected the room to implode like this.

Things I would look out for if they have decided that this core can’t get it done and they need to reset around Hughes/Pettersson/Hronek:
  • Miller traded for non-primary assets and futures just to get him off the team.
  • Boeser, Garland, and Suter traded before the deadline for futures.
  • Futures flipped for another defenseman.
  • Demko traded for whatever his value is—and re-signing Lankinen to be our 1A.
  • Players like Myers (who represent the old lockerroom) bought out or traded this off-season to fully reset the vibes.
If this happens why would Hughes stick around? He's only got 2 and a half more years he's committed. Lol

I like the Doug MacLean tampering "If only we had a 5'11 playmaking C from Brantford, ON." Where it's just obvious who he's talking about.
I'm reading Doug MacLean's book and it's the most MacLean thing ever.

It's just this rambling of thoughts that are all over the place but is suppose to be about a specific topic.

It's entertaining enough but it hurts my brain.

If that Dman is a #3, I think they're 8-10. Which isn't far from where you are, but still a deviation below the legit contenders. (To quibble)

They're hit rate was very promising, don't get me wrong. It made it so one couldn't easily dismiss the notion that they could become a contender... It's just a lot to ask. The bar was just so high.

Appreciate the work, fellow vault dweller.

You shall be an example to follow, not exile.

If there's any truth to this, tell Miller to suck it up. Accepting New York's fringe prospect, yet another inconsistent defenseman struggling and a mid first would be disastrous for us. There's basically nothing we could even salvage out of this in a subsequent trade.

I'm prepared for a possible drop off, especially if we do have to take more futures, but this is just a "we're retooling without the tools" type return.

Dhaliwal: "Six weeks ago the organization decided the Pettersson/Miller situation was untenable and decided one of them had to go."
Is this when a deal was "24-48hrs away" in December?

Be interesting if they tried to do a deal before Christmas and it didn't pan out.

Now all the dirty laundry is out and it's an extremely bad look for a mgmt group that tries to stay tight lipped.

Every pick we get will most likely be flipped immediately.
I imagine if we trade Boeser and Miller, then we’ll use those 2 picks and maybe even our own to get a D and C. Then with do much cap, we might actually target Marner and Ratanen in the off season.

I wonder if the Canucks were looking to follow the Horvat blueprint here. Maybe something like some combination of -

Reilly Smith (or Chris Kreider)
Filip Chytil
Adam Sykora
1st Round Pick

And then potentially use that first in a different trade?
The Horvat trade was a three-way deal, and we need to start thinking of it that way. The Islanders may not have known, but that doesn’t matter. The Canucks were always parlaying at least some of the assets into a “now” piece.

That seems to be an obvious model for a Miller trade, too. They could be figuring out now what team might take the Rangers’ (or their own) first-rounder in exchange for a center or D-man.

From Dhaliwal's opening segment.

Miller
  • Not a coincidence that the trade talks heated up after the Thursday loss; enough was enough
  • Usually don’t see management gather together like this before the trade deadline
  • Called Miller and told him he wasn’t going to play on Saturday
  • Deal with the Rangers broke down because of the Rangers and not from the Canucks or Miller’s end
  • Miller has not asked for a trade
  • 6 weeks ago that the Canucks decided the dynamic between Miller & Pettersson wasn’t working and had to trade one or both of them; need to change the chemistry in the room
  • Does not believe Braden Schneider or Alexis Lafreniere were a part of the trade
  • Maybe Filip Chytil, Ryan Lindgren, prospects, and a 1st
  • Canucks know they won’t win a JT Miller trade; not in a position of strength
  • Offers haven’t been great for Miller
  • Canucks have given teams permission to talk with Miller; Friedman has said to keep an eye on the Hurricanes
  • Mentions Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jack Roslovic as two players the Canucks have really liked in the past; tried to acquire Roslovic when he was in Columbus
  • Hurricanes talk has picked up this morning; keep an eye on them
  • Miller & Tocchet were sick so didn’t attend the Dice & Ice Gala

They only good thing you can say about it is that it opens up long term cap flexibility.

Our media and management team are fantastic at putting us in a position to deal from a point of weakness. These offers look weaker than what we had to deal for Lindholm last year who isn’t even close to the same dude that Miller is.

This whole debacle is so sad to watch.

Yea this to me seems to be the ploy here. If they’ve decided this core isn’t going to cut it, then dumping as much of Miller’s contract and getting whatever futures you can get in order to potentially parlay into someone else, is the way to go. Boeser, Suter and possibly Demko and Garland could be next.

Trading Miller is one issue.

Retooling on the fly around EP40 is a massive mistake. He is not a player who you should build around. He is a very over paid complimentary piece to a puzzle.

so just reviewed this drama with mrs krutov who watches all the games but reads nothing and rarely says much. kind of shocked by the strong response. will also say mrs krutov is ime a dead on people reader. countless times she has shocked me with her insight into employees she has only met briefly in formal social situations.

i will summarize, vector style

-she would trade pettersson if she had to but just believes pettersson just needs to grow up. no way would she trade miller.

-jt miller is 5 times the impact player pettersson is because of his passion and leadership and because he can impose himself on the game and back up his play physically. pettersson brings none of those things.

-pettersson is more inconsistent at playing his game well than miller is.

-pettersson wants to lead but without putting in the effort to overcome his stand offish personality. he wants to be respected as a physical impact player but won't pay the physical price and "goes all bambi all the time". he makes a show of being physical on the ice from time to time but is generally a soft player, which would be ok if he accepted that and didn't try to act otherwise.

-miller is frustrated he got passed over for the c and has to share the team leadership. he should be allowed to lead the team with hughes.

-if pettersson wants to also lead he needs to back off for now and accept that hughes and miller run the team and get to set the tone. he should concentrate on being an impact player with the skills he has and stop trying to be what he is not.

that summary is not doing her rant justice. it was crystal clear and very persuasive.
