Well, yeah

Some of the hyperbolic hype and poison from the Matthews/Laine debate made me put thoughts into words for posterity.

Great game for 97 today, always in awe of his skating, edge work, and vision on the ice.

Matheson can really fly, he is starting to grow on me.

Well duh this was evident in his NCAA /AHL time:laugh:

Or maybe the competition is slightly worse than it would be in the NHL?

Yep. Hall is a guy who thrives with D backing off, not being overly physical, gives him room on bigger ice to go north-south / east -West. He's more suited for European Hockey league. He can also give up ice in tough areas and get it back with extra ice.

Has anyone but me noticed,Mike Matheson is really good
and playing really good hockey...man... Panthers are stacked

Ekblad,Cambell,Kulikov,Gudbransson,Mitchell
this season's surprise Alex Petrovic and now...Matheson..wow!

then theres this kid Ian MCCoshen, another veteran Jakub Kindl
hmm.....

Don't tell anyone:sarcasm: Kindl is like 7/8 Dmen if McCoshen is on same level with Matheson in years time. If so, Kulikov likely moved for solid top line winger. Petrovic and Matheson were outstanding in playoffs. Mitchell is likely done with concussions:(

Only saw 12 minutes of the first and the final 15 minutes of the third. No one looked that good in the first, though Marchand was disruptive. The defencemen were flying in the third, and Scheifele and Stone were great. Matheson, a selection I mocked, looked really good. Fast, good hands, confidence.

Hoping that Marchand returns soon.

Yes , you did. Edmonton fan who only watches local team not rest of league I assume ??

As did I. and he's moving up my depth chart. He now is 2nd paring on Team Canada D. but he wasn't even on it 3 weeks ago. So, looks like Hockey Canada ignored another Canadian playing NCAA for the junior team in Malmo.

Matheson was getting judged by a lot of West Canadian fans in early threads. No knowledge of NCAA/top end AHL guys etc. It's better to do your own research on guys , the scouting reports and tape was there on Matheson. Even if you just listened to Ferraro he said it as he saw him during playoffs in between the benches where you can see speed of players and IQ of individuals game up close.

Talbot and Matheson owned the 1st
McDavid's period seems to be the 2nd, utterly dominant
It was Ryan Murray show in 3rd, that kid is bringing his game to new level past 6-12 months , maybe because past injuries /style of NHL game vs juniors ??

I was thinking the same thing
Missed him in Malmo

Excuse me for not buying in on what Panthers fans say when pumping the tires of one of their prospects or what Canucks fans say about Hutton or what leafs fans say about their flavor of the month...

and I watch 6-12 NCAA games per year and Boston College is one of them, so I did see him play there a few times...and nothing stood out about his level of play the few times I saw him, but that's 3 viewings on TV and I'm not a pro scout for Hockey Canada making evaluations in person. So, that was my comment, that perhaps Hockey Canada scouts should have made a better evaluation.. so watch yourself with the silly assumptions of what kind of fan I am and what I watch or don't watch. It would be appreciated.

Forgive him MW, he literally is ignorant. "Don't assume malice what you explain by ignorance".

Having said that, Matheson's game translates better to international ice because Matheson is an excellent skater. Everyone who saw him in the playoffs was high on him, but had logical doubts because of small sample size.

We both commented on him being a future TC pairing with Ekblad.

The talent was there but it was "show me". I admit I overlooked Matheson and was skeptical, but him and our other young D have exceeded expectations.

Rielly, Ceci, and Matheson have stood out to me. All phenomenal skaters. We knew that going in, our consensus doubts were experience. They've done admirable.

Let's see our young D against the Finns. Show the world you are the best D core at this tournament. These kids can all fly out there. First pairing through third pairing.

Hutton and Dumba looked like the odd men out in this group. That's the beauty of elite D, you can play them every other shift, in all situations. They can play 25-32 mins/game unlike Forwards.

Roll with Rielly, Tanev, Ceci, Matheson every shift in some pairing. Elite D catch their breath when the other pair is on the ice. Play the two pairs every shift when it matters, top end D can handle it.

^You forgot Murray like Oil did:laugh:

Murray was top notch in that 3rd period. No way this team rolls 4 Dmen. Keep playing the six and find the right chemistry. Hutton should be sat, not impressed at all with him skinny soft player / that +\- on Vancouver team hurts my eyes too as well the pre tournament tire pumping here. I worry about Hutton the most in defensive zone vs top teams.

Good point on Murray, well played on the joke :).

He's played very well too, looks confident. I'm actually quite pleased with Murray. He's solid and steady, nothing flashy just does his job.

It's a more general point meaning we have at least two pairings of D we can send out there in crunch time during meaningful moments.

If we got one more D from the second round of the playoffs we would be set, we're sitting at 5 D who are exceeding expectation. But the guys look like they're building chemistry and I'm fine rolling with what we got. Big test is against the Finns.

I've been watching ALL Canada and Finland games. Barkov line has been best in tournament and not even close. It's not all Laine like the media wants everyone to believe:laugh: Trust me I know about Finland watching Barkov 82 plus games a year. If the Finland coach does not double shift his top two lines I think Canada wins. Finland fans don't like his line rolling. Koivu and Aho look like they are playing their best hockey too. Granlund is X factor vs Canada (if he can keep up his high level puck skills vs Canada, Finland has great shot to win this thing).
