GDT: Group B - May 20 - Sweden vs Latvia

I saw him turn. Was it to the Latvian bench? If so, why?
It's likely that it was already a response from Petersson to something that had already being said among players. I mean, teams are taunting each other, there is no secret to that, and it is ridiculous to claim that one team is the dirty one here and to blame. Taunting is effective - just look at this board, we have pages discussing it already.

Anyhow, for Bukarts it was a reaction to Elias, he said it post-game. Doesn't really matter, though.

I've never seen anything like that from him before. Why would he do that toward the Latvians specifically? Never heard him say anything cocky either. Humble and easy to like. Both feet on the ground. So, I don't buy that for a second.
The message he gave was 'look at me, you're such bums I'm not even happy I scored'.

You might have an opinion of him and it might even be true, but that's not how we interpreted it anyway.

So, yeah, you should look at the later taunting in Petersson's context ānyway

Because reportedly, the Latvian bench was taunting Pettersson quite loudly before he scored. Hence the death stare response when he scored. Or what, do people think that reaction from Pettersson fell out of the blue sky?

Or, the message was: "You should just shut up and play hockey, otherwise this happens."

Put in context it becomes a bit more nuanced and a one time taunting of the bench is fine as a response. However, it turned into something else and could have been penalized by the refs. It could also have gotten out of hand. Taunting like that and diving are two pet-peeves of mine. But since EP started the whole thing I'm fine with putting this to rest.

Great performance by the Latvians. Lets see if you can build on this and become a challenger in a few years. Best of luck.

Yes, a stare like that can only come from the depths of hell.

He's a kid. So, I can overlook it but he shouldn't have given them anything to work with.

Pettersson didn't say anything, he didn't give them any gesture, he just stared at them. How can that be such a big thing? Lol. At least Kovalchuk pointed at Crosby after he took a dumb penalty.

I have no problem with Pettersson staring at the bench after a goal, if that bench was mocking him. It's quite amusing how some Latvians depict themselves as some sort of victims here.

Or this?

That is a gesture. Apparently staring towards a rude bench is more rude than the mocking from the bench itself. Hilarious.

The point is that he should just focus on his game and not play in to their tactics.

We never had a chance? It was literally a tied game 30 seconds before the final whistle

The Swedish and their logic
Well logic or not Swedes are the champs. And two years in a row. So great logic then

Losing Ābols broke us too, but yeah. Same old story, i feel the same way i felt last year when we played Swedes in QF`s - empty
Like Finland before you. And look and Finland now. Your time will come. Great team Latvia. Sweden had a an own goal but it was forced but good plays by Latvian forecheck ( and Swedish defense was pretty ugly last night). And look at Switzerland today. They were like Latvia just 6-8 yrs ago. Hockey world is growing

If you taunt you have to win the game otherwise you are even a bigger looser. But its no big deal. The swedish players might get pissed and then put their other gear in and off you go.

It was the alien death stare. End of story Elias won. He might stared over to his own bench.
Elias might said to the coach prior to the goal; hold my beer. Bam! Then looking back to the coach. I mean he is a very cool, smart and funny dude.

Honestly, I think everything about this is silly. The Latvians chirping him from the bench is a non-issue. Pettersson giving them a death stare afterwards is a non-issue. I'd even say that the response from Bukarts is a non-issue.

If there's anything to say about this, it's that there's nothing wrong with a bit more emotion in the game, nothing wrong with adding another layer to the game where players actually try to respond on the ice. We should applaud it if anything. Less angry scrums between whistles, more responses in play.

Honestly, the world is filled with enough offensive crap, we don't need to go looking for more.

Yup, if there is more emotion in the group stage games, I'm all for it. I think these group stage games have been pretty awesome for the most part.
