I wasn't sure what you mean so I googled Burakovsky... damn I was absolutely sure dude is Russian

His dad was a Swede and hockey player/coach. But it isn't a Swedish surname so to speak. His distant roots are in Eastern Europe. Could be Ukraine, Russia or even Poland.

Kazakhstan has little less than 5000 registered hockey players, while Czech Republic has more than 100.000. Talent pool is simply not big enough, however that doesn't mean they can't drastically improve their programs, numbers are not everything of course. Number of registered hockey players in Latvia is very similar.

1. Availability of rinks
2. Reducing or subsidising cost of junior hockey
3. Coach expertise at junior level
4. Talent identification and subsequent hothousing through academies and competition

All these aims can be achieved by any hockey nation if it's well run. However the numbers game does win. There is more probability of unearthing superstars every age group rather than one say every few years if you have more kids playing.

Unfortunately hockey is such an expensive sport to play that few can afford it in a country like Kazakhstan.

I appreciate your care about my country. But give us a favor. Watch your own pockets.

Give us some oil and then we will back down :laugh:
PLEEEEASE!! :D

Otherwise you will be invaded by the hot Baltic sniper girl squad. Both Trump and Putin have said they are vicious, those foxes.

But the difference between a team like Germany and Kazakhstan is that Germany actually produces players that get drafted(ie Dreisatl) who was the last player from Kazakhstan to be drafted?Antropov?

Doesn't help that the top prospects are usually ethnic Russians and they decide to play for them. i.e YEGOR KORSHKOV and others.

This is Russian downfall of hockey.

Meh, in 2000 Russia ended up being last, and, did Russian hockey die out? Stop whining. Granted, letting Kazakhstan score 4 goals is not good, but Russian won and I hope that they can start playing better and more cold-blooded, combinational hockey. The start was rough but I think and hope our boys will improve.

That roster was made up of mostly "playing" players, not this grinders fest Znarok put together.

What's going on with our defence?? Bobrovsky letting 4 pucks in against Kazakhstan is a bit too much for my liking. Rough start for our team, I hope they'll start playing better.

Not a problem, how many buckets do you need? :)
And yes, Baltic girls are welcome too.

It would be funny if it wouldnt so sad. Kazakhstan produces almost zero talent and their U-20 and U-18 would get ripped apart in the elite division, so they just buy up players from other countries..

Funny you should mention their U-20 and U-18. Which would have been better if they had the 10 or so Kazakh players who played for Russia at that level since 1999.

watching this game on TSN, did the commentator just say Russia is waiting for Ovechkin, Kuchnetzov, Orlov and Burakovksy? I am sure they gotta wait a looooong time to get Burakovsky
note to commentators, not all Russian sounding names are Russian

I can envision Znoroks omitting Ovechkin and Kuznetsov in favor of more grinders.

What an embarrassment thus far.

Good thing those group games don't matter much! This tournament is really all about the last 4-5 days.
