The Devils are not going to pass up an electrifying American franchise center, (not to mention giving him to the Rangers of all teams.) They’ve needed a player like Hughes for their entire existence.

Maybe you have to be from the area, but it’s just not going to happen.

Hopefully the reasoning for picking Hughes is that they think that he's the superior player, not that he's "Electric" or "American", because that'd be a pretty terrible reason to pick the inferior player.

Yeah I praised Jalonen and his coaching during the first game. It looked excellent even if we had lost that one. We had very good NHL players with no coaching with Marjamäki. Now we don't have those guys but we have probably the best coach in Finland.

yet to have faced a real team though. Canada was very bad, worst Canada I have seen in ages. Russia, USA and Czechs are scary.

I hope that too. More needed there, though I won't comment about organisation. Why we (we fans generally) can't just be happy with established status quo? It's irrelevant does he go 1st or 2nd, but I prefer personally second place if it leads him to NY Rangers.

Can't blame NJ staff for picking Hughes. If I'd be NHL Manager in US team I would do that largely regardless how well they play in this tournament.

He’s not the inferior player. The growth of a franchise that is wedged between the Rangers and Flyers is not a stupid concern.

Agreed. But I think it's viable to say that this is a 1a and 1b kind of a thing. Kakko could have gone 1st in other years.

People put too much stock in that anyway, as if it's a contest between pure skill displayed. There are considerations other than just how good a player is. If there are two players of a similar skill level, with little to separate them, you take the guy who fits your franchise the best.

Hughes just seems to fit NJ Devils the best. Not only does he fill a required slot as a center, but he also energizes the franchise.

Then why do I see people griping every year “If _____ blank was American he’d go 1st overall”?
