USA/Canada will probably grow as the tournament goes on, like they always do. But Canada did at least play even against Finland, while USA looked like shit.

I expect the USA to improve a lot. They just underestimated the Slovaks, which does not mean that the Slovaks didn't play very well in front of their home crowd. The individual quality of the US players is certainly here, now they got a lesson and learned that it is necessary to move their feet and work 100% even against relatively unknown European players. They are going to play much better in the next games.

Saw Eichel got USA player of the game which doesn’t mean much in a 4-1 loss. How did he look?

Looked good - he pushed play up the ice regularly and his line was the only one consistently moving not the Slovak zone. His first period was one of his best I have ever seen him play.

I thought Eichel forced a lot of plays myself but it's not like there were a lot of great players to choose from on the US side

USA didn’t underestimate the Slovaks, as usual they overrated themselves

Does anyone have the face-off stats?. Biggest reason why USA lost this games, they lost most of their face-offs,
must've been something like 80-20 to Slovak's, even worse in the US o-zone, first 2 periods didn't see them win a single face-off.

I swear he always looks really meh at international tournaments. He just doesn't care
... Patrick Kane? Like the same Patrick Kane that won the MVP of this tournament literally last year while setting a team USA tournament record in points and assists? His 20 points last year were tied for the most in the last 40 years.

Let’s pump the breaks a bit there, eh? It was just one game and Kane hasn’t played a meaningful hockey game in awhile. I’m sure he’ll get better as the tournament goes on...

It was 32-24 for Slovaks which is surprising to me as I thought we lost most of them. Only Sukel was above 50% though.

us team appeared rudderless. while the roster is loaded skill wise, not many proven leaders on it. could be an early dud that is quickly addressed and corrected. could become a theme. suter is a revered leader, but not sure how vocal he is. from what i see, unless eichel or maybe larkin (martinez, white?) step up as guys that vocally demand a standard of effort in the room, this team will go nowhere. i have no doubt they'll bounce back off this for a bit...but they won't be a legit contender unless someone steps up and demands a lot more. when you're most physically engaged player is an undersized dman whose coming straight from ncaa, you know you have a bunch of guys that need to be looking in a mirror

Soft game from the US. So much wasted talent in one game.

Edit:

Hughes (C), looked well against men. Quinn not so much.

It’s like the US is approaching this like a game of shinny in July.

I know it’s not the Olympics, but f***ing buck up. Too much wasted talent thus far.

Face-off was a big issue for Slovak team in the last years. So their hired Handzus as an assistant coach and they started guiding players and practicing face-offs during all NT camps. Apparently it had at least some effect.

How could USA lose this game with all the NHL stars they had? Weird.

In hockey, all it really takes to win any game is a good PP, good goaltending and good team defence. Hope that your best players will score a couple, and hoping some depth guy chips in. All those things came true. I'm not that shocked that Slovakia came out on top, but to do it 4-1 was very surprising.
