It was an idea. I didn't say it was a good idea.

I'm convinced that Matt Greene is not returning next season. I think Lombardi was either having a hard time talking Greene down to a cap-friendly number or foresaw in March that Greene's game isn't going to hold up long term, which precipitated the trade for McNabb.

The Kings gave up a big prize in Fasching to get McNabb. It was hard for me to understand why Lombardi made this trade until I thought about Matt Greene's future on this team. Now it makes a lot of sense. Lombardi needed a tough, mean young defenseman to step in and fill Greene's shoes next season, so he goes out and gets McNabb. Fasching wasn't going to make this team for at least three seasons, and you gotta give to get.

Get the "Matt Greene appreciation thread" ready, folks. It's been a great ride.

I think the need for a good, young, stay-at-home defenseman was obvious from the playoffs against Chicago last year, and certainly at the beginning of this year. The defense is slow, and Mitchell, Greene, and Regher are all essentially the same player: slow, physical defensemen who are useful on the penalty kill but liabilities against fast teams. Mitchell moves the puck a little better than the other two and his mobility did improve over time, but basically all three of these guys should be bottom-pairing players.

With none of the other defense prospects playing anyone out of a job (plus the insurance policy of Jeff Schultz), I'm not surprised at all that Lombardi went looking for another young defenseman who could step in. Honestly, I was surprised when Bernier wasn't used for that purpose.

I think you are correct, but DL also wanted those 2, #2 draft picks that he needed
to get Gaborik. It was brilliant. I was following Fasching's year and he was really
making an impact as a Freshman. He is going to be a good one. Possibly great.
But also consider Fasching was a 4th round pick! And DL gets 2 #2's and McNabb,
for Fasching and Deslauriers. When you look at it like that, it was a great deal.
Deslauriers had a shot at the bottom 6 next yr, but DL got assets to get Gaborik and
got McNabb, who is ready.

He also got McNabb into the system and playing Kings way of playing, for the last few months, so he will be that much more ready. On the Black Aces and training here will make a difference. I think they saw that Forbert is not quite there and had a shot at McNabb. Buffalo just got a new GM and the Kings had been interested in Brayden for awhile. Got it done.

Matt Greene did a great job here and he is not officially gone. He's been great here and a leader in the room.

Deslauriers was also not going to be exempt from waivers this upcoming 2014-2015 season so it was going to be decision time on him. He was either going to make the NHL team as a forward trying to crack the bottom six or he was going on waivers where he probably would not have cleared.

Yes and it would be very unlikely for him to break into our deep forward group so the writing was on the wall he was not part of the future here.

It's sad to say but one of Greene/Mitchell will probably not return. I'd honestly rather lose Regehr.

Both are huge culture guys.

McNabb better be good.

Greene will at least test the market and frankly I expect him to leave. He was a healthy scratch last year at times and likely would have been much of the playoffs if not for injuries. Greene isn't old, I'm sure he wants to play so I can see him heading to a team seeking to add some vets, maybe Florida on a two year deal at $6-$7 million (two cup rings pays well).

I fear that McNabb is the next Ellerby..

I don't think he's all he's panned out to be either, but Buffalo fans defended him a lot when we got him in the trade, something Florida fans didn't with Ellerby. Also, DL gave up a 5th to get Ellerby, not two decent prospects, I'll trust him that McNabb is at least NHL worthy. Maybe not a top four guy, but a bottom pairing guy.

He sounds like a cross between Jack Johnson and Jake Muzzin to me, can play physical, can hit, has a good shot, but is prone to mental errors at times.

I tend to agree Greene (and Mitchell) wont be back. Greene has been the ultimate warrior for us. He reminds me a lot of Norstrom. He was among the group of guys that helped change the culture of the team from top to bottom.

I saw a post-Cup interview with Greene where it seemed like he felt he'd do anything to be on this team next year. I don't think he's enthusiastic about testing the market - who would be after being on this team?

I like the Muzzin comparison. Big hits, big shot. Hopefully he's a bit meaner and stronger than Muzzin.

Easy to say now but when your agent calls you and tells you such and such team offered you a nice deal to play elsewhere you have to take it. This will probably be Greene's last shot at a big pay day, relatively speaking and I think coming off his 2nd Cup somebody will throw money at him. Love him and Mitchell but this is professional sports in a salary cap era, you gotta move on. The good part is the Kings only have to worry about who is going to be their 6th defensemen next season, what an awesome problem to have.

I think that playing time will be the factor, not cap hit. As long as he isn't offered a large reduction in salary, he'd be ok with the money I think, he has earned over $17 million in his career according to capgeek. I think for a guy like Greene it's more about playing time, and the fact he was a scratch at times can't be something he's to eager to repeat.

I fear that McNabb is the next Ellerby..

No way.

First think about the cicumstances in which they were acquired.

Ellerby= Emergency band aid because of injures

McNabb- Proactive move for the future.

Have faith in our scouts. They have done an amazing job!

Question: if you were offered 3M AAV for 4 years by another team and the kings only offered 1.5M, would you go to the other team, JUST because of more money?

Honestly, I want to be where I'm happy. And it isn't as if Greene's going to go on welfare by signing for 1.5M. LA is his home, and he's comfortable and happy here. Any other team Greene goes to, there will be the unknown...why risk it?

I agree completely. Ranked in order who i'd rather keep on the team:

1) Mitchell
2) Greene
3) Regehr

I'll give Regehr a pass in last year's playoffs because Darryl mentioned that his arm was in really bad shape. I'd still have to give Greene the nod over him, though.

I think you guys are right on McNabb - they are being proactive because they see the writing on the walls with Greene. Only thing that sucks is he's a left handed shot.

McNabb > Ellerby AINEC. Has way more offensive upside than Ellerby.

I have a fear of losing Greene.

After next season there is a good chance both Regher and Mitchell retire, leaving us with this.

Muzzin-Doughty
Martinez-Voynov
McNabb-

Two or three years ago, If I had told you that our blueline was gonna be

Muzzin-Doughty
Mitchell-Voynov
Martinez Greene

you would have **** a pink twinkie

also remember we had Martinez Schultz for one round!

Gravel Forbort Bodnarchuk Schultz Campbell(might be retained) or the opportunity to bring in another vet who has more jump in their legs. We have become the team that players who are desperate to win a cup will give up a bunch to play for along with the Hawks.

Gabby's rumored to be considering what is being called a "team friendly" contract to remain with us. Now that term is usually nonsensical to me as I believe that only under the rarest of circumstances does a player walk away from hard earned money because they like the team they are on. That said in this case I can see one major reason for any player to take a discount to be a King and we watched our guys hoist for the 2nd time recently.

We were already there before this season but now one of the benefits of winning is about to be a very big issue for us and that is that we will be a top choice for UFA's.

Gabby is a perfect fit for us on the ice and I hope we keep him but all things considered I can understand why he would want to take a team friendly position on re-signing with us. Which I think will happen over the next 12 days.

On the blueline if Greener and Mitchell go then we will have other options to replace them with. I still think one will remain for this coming season and then the next season we will see an established McNabb play next to a different Vet D. DL will have the right player there so I am not worried.

I'd have to imagine Greene could get way more on the free market than DL can give him especially with all the raises that are gong to be needed next season. The issue is probably contract length more than dollar amount.

In some trade deadline interview with Lombardi, I believe he said that McNabb was on the Kings scouting list as the best D-man not playing in the NHL.

Again, easy to say when you're not making that kind of money. If 2 companies came to me right now and one offered me twice as much I'd take it. This could be about securing your families future and your kids future, so what's more important? And being an ice hockey player myself there is no way in hell I want to sit on the bench or be scratched. I want to play. The good news is Greene gets to choose, I don't think he'll be back. Other places also offer less severe taxes than SoCal so that AAV could possibly go up just by leaving.
