Haha, had a small section of a corn field that The Old Man left untiled, so alas a nice section of farm fresh ice, that was great, living in a snow belt, not so much. By the time I cleared a sizeable patch after a snow squall after school it would soon be too dark to be out.

Weekends would feature a trip to the local small lake where the adults and older teens would shovel off almost half a football field and would have some 50 plus people with sticks and skates, many very young and their dads and then a mess of us around peewee ot bantam age all chasing one puck. Frozen feet, hands, the accidental knocks on the shins, many a rural winter afternoon back when we only got 2 channels out there.

Very cool.... similar memories, experiences... also in Southern Ontario, rural & Toronto.

Not a "water cannon", just an optical illusion. Granted surplus WWII equipment was plentiful and often modified towater fields in summer etc.

Earl Robertson playing in numerous leagues for various teams since the mid 20's by the time that picture was taken..... Great shot of the Leafs, Salming et al.... Ballard & Pavarotti a really fun shot .... Sidney Crosby & his dad etc....

Indeed so..... and appropriate, showbiz as Earl Robertson, the name itself tickles my Funny Bone as it not only sounds like the kind of a name that youd have with a TV News Anchor back in the day... 50's & 60's.... it actually is.... and parodied on SCTV in the 70's & 80's with the creations of the fictional News Anchors Earl Camembert & Floyd Robertson who some here might recall.... Shows you how messed up my mind... wanders a fair bit.

Interesting HOH in LA... There was also the Hollywood Wolves of the 40's. 1941/50 that for a couple of years was a Leaf farm club, Bill Barilko, some vets like Ching Johnson etc & a few other notables playing for them.

Theres that strange "halo" on the players again, top photo that makes it look somewhat photo-shopped. Cut outs. Like table top hockey players dropped in to a shot huh?... Its not of course but a very interesting effect..... Ive never seen this one before of Hap Day either. Love it..... Along with the rest of them vintage & modern history. Very nice indeed.... Had no idea about that player up there Robin Burns & ITECH either so educational at the same time.

Good Heavens. Rather sad, melancholic. Hadnt ever really thought about him beyond his years playing, as in "whatever happened to", where is he now, what did he do after hanging them up.... 80 years old.... in my minds eye ever the mischievous imp, bit of a smirk on his face, Angel with a dirty nose, bit of the Dead-End Kid about him and in a good way, very entertaining player at times, quite useful, a contributer, valuable player. Important piece of the fabric, swagger of the Bruins back in the day. Real bread & butter guy. Liked him a lot.

Those Flames had among my favorite uniforms of all time. There's something about those late '60's, early '70's expansion teams: The Penguins (I think their second jersey that the current team had as a third jersey for a few years), all of the Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals, the purple and gold of the Kings, the green of the North Stars, the Scouts, original Caps and the timeless Flyers jerseys.

Maybe because it was just around the time I was getting into the NHL as a young child, but those were the days for uniforms.

Who could ever forget his little performance in New York, the infamous "Choke Dance" out there at Center at MSG after the Bruins annihilated the Rangers & that just the tip of the iceberg. Ha? Unreal. ... He could drive the opposition to beyond distraction yet at the same time a very responsible two way player (used on the PK at various times, multiple 20G seasons etc) & of course beyond loyal to his teammates. Big fan favorite.... his own Bumper Sticker which said "Pie's the Greatest" or whatever, something like that. Needle. Instigator. Type of player you love to have on your own team & love to hate if he's not. something Bostons almost always had of course going back, way back to Shore, Ken Linseman post McKenzie & so on... from High River Alberta & his other sport & love; Rodeo.... and as the HHOF bio says of him, "Johnnys whole life was a Rodeo".
