Zach Hyman crashed Carey Price's crease in the second period of a Saturday night game in January of this calendar year. I'd seen the video of that play, but not the photograph that was in The Toronto Star.

I rolled my eyes at the two Hull photos. But maybe you haven't seen them before.

But man oh man! the young Tikhonov, young Jagr and the two best: The Road Runner in a fight with the ref's head down and that war training photo! :amazed: A-ma--zing!

Here's Matt Greene next to a WWII vet.

A little photo-bombing likely by two boys in this:

bun-cook.jpeg

He had seen them all by this time, and here is his "score-card" rating the best. Notice how he added Guy Lafleur.

I thought your above post the best yet and possibly the best of this thread until the commonplace Morenz and Pitre pics.

I think we need a separate thread for famous/standard photographs you see a dozen times or more, though deservedly so.

I started this thread for less viewed ones, and you certainly have provided the lion's share of those. Let's get the frequently seen ones into a 'famous photos' thread to not bore us with them once again (I've been around here too long maybe). Anyways, another thread is warranted!

Well, what can I say? I guess I have to throw in a commonplace photo here and there. I am sure even these are new to many fans. Not everyone have been around for decades like yourself. ;)

You have to take the good ones with the bad ones. But no seriously, it's difficult to know what's commonplace. Yes, the Morenz one is probably common, or very similar studio photos of him. But actually the Didier Pitre photo is one I can't recall to have seen on many occasions. I have a good portion of other great photos, but I guess I'll stop here. It was fun though. Thanks for all the great photos Vanislander.

We've all seen video and/or photos of an octopus being thrown onto the ice at the Joe. It's a tradition that security has tried to stop, checking people when they enter and confiscating many live ones hidden under jackets. But how the heck did a fan get this one past security? :amazed:

Two years after backstopping the Rangers to the Stanley Cup and two years before doing so as the starter in Toronto, the great Lorne Chabot (pictured below) began the 1930-31 season alternating starts with a youngster named Benny Grant and between them recorded five consecutive shutouts! Grant didn't stick in the NHL and Chabot went on later in his career to become the NHL 1st team all-star in Chicago.

Rudi Ball was identified as the best European ice hockey player in a French Sports Magazine in 1930 and scored three goals for Germany in their 1932 bronze-medal winning tourney. He would go on to score 500+ goals. But, in 1936 he wasn't picked to represent his own country in the Winter Olympics because of the Nazis.
In 1936, because he was Jewish, Ball (the 25-year-old captain) was initially overlooked for selection in the German ice hockey team. His good friend and teammate, Gustav Jaenecke, refused to play unless Ball was included. Ball also believed a deal could be struck to save his family in Germany if he returned to play in the games. The German selectors also realized that without Ball and Jaenecke the team would not stand a chance of winning. Another factor was that the Nazi party could not overlook the fact that Ball was without doubt one of the leading athletes in his sport. With much controversy Ball was included in the German team to play at the 1936 Olympic games. One report of the time proposed that Ball was playing against his will. The deal for Ball's family to leave Germany was also agreed. After Ball was injured, the Germans took 5th place in the Olympic tournament. Ball played four matches and scored two goals.

Vancouver Asahi hockey club. The Asahi (Morning Sun) are better known as a baseball squad from Vancouver's Japanese community competing in the Terminal League from 1914 until 1941. It would seem the club also had a hockey team, at least in 1919/20. The club was disbanded when after the attacks at Pearl Harbour, Japanese Canadians were subsequently re-located to internment camps.
