Prospect Info: Grand Rapids Griffins Discussion

I personally don't view the AHL as being much of a litmus test. Sure, it's smaller ice and you have rosters made up of a bunch of guys who are never going to have the talent to be NHL'ers, so they are almost entirely try hards, which I guess prepares you for the physical element of the NHL, but by and large the quality is lacking.

I haven't given this enough thought, but I can't think of a recent player who developed after spending significant amounts of time in the AHL. I think you have to go back to the over ripening period when Tatar and Hudler spent several seasons there. Val Filppula only spent one full season in the AHL. Goalies may be different, Jimmy was there for 4 seasons, but Mrazek was basically there for 90ish games.
While I understand that higher-end NHL players don't typically require a ton of time in the AHL, it is still a litmus test of sorts. If you struggle to be effective in the AHL, you will most likely struggle to be effective in the NHL. If you can't keep up with the pace and physicality of the AHL, chances are you won't be able to keep up with the pace and physicality of the NHL and need the AHL for more physical development time.

I don't, however, think you need to statistically dominate the AHL to earn a callup or that you can't be called up until you are ready to stick full time in the NHL. After you establish a certain level of proficiency at the level, you should be a call up option.

AHL players are absolutely awesome hockey players. The tip of the pyramid is just super, super small and they aren't at the top of it.

Sounds like Johansson is starting to come on for GR. He really hasn't been there very long, either. I think that was his 12th game. Perhaps that gives us a better idea of how long ASP and MBN need to feel comfortable.

Just goes to show you how weird SHL roster decisions can be, too. AnJo had 10 points in 46 games in the SHL, and now he has 5 in 12 in the AHL.

They might be younger but it is the only league where on most nights 8 to 10 guys between the teams will play in the NHL or have. It is a valuable league.

I think the NCAA waited to long but I am curious with NIL if we start to see a CHL to NCAA path that impacts this some.

The big club and GR have the same issues,,,mental tougness, intensity and grit. To me, it's scouting, it's Kris Draper and Steve Yzerman. It's a organizational problem

Oh come on. That’s a bit much. They’re definitely in a rut lately, but overall GR has been solid since Watson took over and I definitely wouldn’t say they have a toughness or grit problem.

Of course it means nothing so far. Just would like to see some of the dynamism guys like Hutson et al showed.

We really are overdue for a pick beyond #10 to join the team and make a big difference. Was/am hoping ASP could be one of those guys.
He has looked good and dynamic imo.

Even as a guy still adjusting he stands out among the crowd imo with how skilled and poised he is.

Yeah to be fair Hutson was terrible defensively for his first 20ish games and still isn’t very good. If ASP can be like a Torey Krug that’s still a very useful player. Hoping for more!

What is up with this playoff schedule?

Just another reason I would not jump to the AHL as a netminder at 18-19. In fact, with NIL, it is likely a few more of the top prospects take the college route. The major League sports minor league/development programs are rarely top shelf. The AHL is no exception. They don't even get to fly coach, they get a bus. That is major junior Canada and USHL style. Better travel in college, lower cost and, for some, better pay.

Some ridiculous amount of time off before the first game and then until the 2nd game. This scheduling nonsense appears every year, and so do our complaints. MBN is already regretting coming over. LOL!

I guess you can call it a positive for the Griffins that the Dallas Stars are going to the 2nd round because their AHL squad won’t be getting any reinforcements from the NHL

For people who watch GR, how would you compare Lombardi's impact this season compared to Berggren last season?

Berggren was just straight up efficient. I wouldn't say he pushed the pace of play but he got points like clockwork. Too bad he's not clicking in the big league. May end up being just a really good AHL tweener like Hirose was. Lombardi though makes things happen when the puck is on his stick even if he isn't scoring. Everything this team has done since the all star break has been pretty brutal to sit through but Lombardi is fun to watch. Zero fear. Really hope the Wings give him a chance because we need someone who can make things happen out on the ice.

Berggren was blocked by Tarasenko on top 6 last season,we don't know his potential. Most likely he will get traded and have not bad NHL career.
