GDT: [GM61] Canucks vs Ducks | Wed, Mar. 5th | 7:30pm | SNP | Aquatic Fowl

Ahh, here it is.
My GDT was just basically a title.

A scheduled win. The Ducks played last night.
The Canucks have had 3 days of rest and practices.
1rst game back in weeks for the Canucks.

But the Ducks are within a win of 2 points of the Canucks if they win.

Being a scheduled win and all the Canuck advantages even a OT game should be considered a loss even without Hughes. If this team is that fragile they won't have much of a chance if they make the playoffs.

EP40 should be able to get a couple of PP points so no real big deal there.
This is a team out of the playoff picture for years now and still below the Canucks in the standings.
But the Canucks have a very hard remainder to the schedule yet to play. A close as the race for WC2 is there will not be teams easing off as usual.

Every game is a must win, there only needs be one team of five to go on a heater and the WC2 spot is out of reach.

Crickets in here, eh?

This feels like a scrimmage in advance of the trade deadline. Hope we get 2 points and start to play better. Maybe the team rallies around Quinn being out.

I was looking back at our record, and the last time we scored 5 goals in a game was against Columbus on Dec. 6th, and prior to that, against Detroit on Dec. 1st.

Can we score 5 goals tonight? Would love to see it.

Haven't watched the past few games. Days are getting longer and the weather is getting nicer.

The season has dragged on and it hasn't really been enjoyable. Miller getting hurt before the season begun, Joshua getting cancer over the summer, Demko's continued injuries, Boeser getting concussed, Petterssons struggles, Hughes getting hurt multiple times, etc...

Yeah we are 2 pts out of a playoff spot but any knowledgeable fan knows we are in a rather rough spot.

I hear that. I'm a die hard - I survived the Benning years watching every game, I'll keep it up here. This game definitely feels like small potatoes this week given the impending deadline.

Wonder if any Canucks play their final game tonight.

If Hughes isn't going to be 100 percent again this season, the Canucks really need to start accepting the inevitable and begin the 'downstream planning' in earnest. Punting on this season at the TDL might be a necessity.

Even if they somehow squeeze into a wildcard spot--they're going nowhere without a fully healthy Hughes.

I'm a die-hard, too. Or maybe I'm just an addict. Or a masochist.

Regardless, we still have a team on the bubble right now. The key injuries have been killing us this year. Will there be a trade this week that will pump some air into the tires? I'm sure our expansion cousins in Buffalo can sympathize, but they're in a worse spot than us.

Same. Horrible season where everything has gone wrong...But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.

It's funny everyone loathing the team this season, and it has been a hard season.

Human psychology and the weight of expectations are a curious thing.

We had this incredible, everything going right, season last year that raised expectations probably a little too high.

Then we have had an incredibly frustrating season with a million injuries, internal strife, etc.

But if this were 2023-24, and it was going this way we would be absolutely ecstatic to FINALLY be in the playoff picture again and it would be a step up from the previous year.

We haven't been a playoff team much in the last decade and yet so many here are hoping we will lose out because 'we'd just get roasted anyway'.

How about we enjoy having an actual competitive team with high expectations and hope for a fun little playoff run.

Hell, if we play a team like the Jets and lose in 7 games, that's hope and inspiration that this iteration of the team can and will build on moving forward.

I'm obviously not saying we should pay for rentals and I hope we don't do an 'own rental' on Brock. But emotionally I am all in on trying to make the playoffs and excited to watch the rest of the season and see how our team deals with the mix of hope and adversity.

I find may canuck fans are very what are you doing for me now. Not even what have you done for me lately.

That is not to say everyone is. Or that sometimes criticism isn't warranted.

In terms of moving forward there is always a fine line between making sure your future is bright and you are also still competitive.

My view changed on what to do when Hughes injury became more than expected. I am now more willing to punt as our team goes as he goes.

I like Suter and Boeser but they should probably go, I would hedge and keep Forbert.

I don't think either Suter or Boeser are absolutely indispensable to our chances down the stretch.

Also if we trade one or both and relay at least some of the assets into a mid 20s player with some term, I really think we can work the mid-road and still be decent this year and set us up well for next year.

I’m not sure that’s true. I would agree if it was just a case of injuries and things going wrong, but this season is basically on the back of Hughes and there’s so many more question marks moving forward that it doesn’t feel like a step in the right direction. Previously there was hope that if Pettersson, Miller, Boeser, Hughes and Demko were all healthy at the same time, the team could be quite good. And that’s basically what happened last year. But now Miller is gone and Pettersson and Demko are huge question marks. And Boeser might be gone too. Outside of Hughes there’s not a lot to bank on moving forward

I think you're forgetting how terrible 2020-21 to 2022-23 were.

Coming off of the bubble, 2020-21 was a team that sort of felt quit on by ownership and then seemed to quit on themselves. A very unlikeable team.

The following two years we were so horrendous out of the gates that the playoffs were largely out of the picture by December.

Both years we would then win a bunch down the stretch to end up with 15th and 11th overall picks in years that, in terms of playoff hopes, were more like 5th and 7th overall pick quality years.

This year, for all that's gone wrong, we are a team with control over our own destiny with 22 games left.

I'm personally not entirely convinced that we can't even catch the Kings if we can go on a bit of a run here.

I’m terms of record, you’re right, but I just feel like with those teams at least there was some hope that there was potential there with the core. The team is certainly better today but it feels like there isn’t much potential to improve. The things that have gone wrong don’t look easily solvable anymore. It’d be easier to see the bright side if we had a better answer with Pettersson‘s future I guess.

I am always of the belief I would trade anything for the right return.

So tough to say with out seeing what is being offered.

But again I am now way more ok with selling if Hughes is out like it seems
