Not 11.6m good
I said it before, I'll say it again. Salary almost never matters. I wish management, media, and fans would stop talking about salary and care about the game.

games like this prove that putting hronek on hughes’ pairing is a total waste
An interesting take. On the PP it's a good combination - would like to see that more often than always just a forward.

Marcus Pettersson somewhat quietly led all Canucks with 22:12 of ice time. Garland led Canuck forwards with 20:22. Lekk the low minute man with 10:10, but he looked dangerous in those few minutes.
Lekk was an enigma. He made some serious blunders but showed flashes of shockingly amazing skills.

I’d like to see Pettersson-Hronek but I think Myers is a poor fit for Hughes even if Hughes is good enough not to bring him down too much. But so many times Myers isn’t in a good position and forces Hughes to do more work. Hopefully Willander can be that guy sooner than later.
Myers had another great game tonight, at one point chasing down a player with his reach and speed on what should have been a breakaway.

After the 1st period, I wished I'd seen more shots and less passing from him and everybody.

Myers can step up but he’s a guy who can go roaming around and isn’t easy to read off of. Hughes shouldn’t be spending time adjusting his game to suit his partner.

Ducks look like they've finally figured it out.

This wasn't their best effort and was a scheduled loss. But seems like they could conceivably be a moderate threat down the stretch and have to be considered a playoff potential next year.

Obviously as perhaps the biggest Petey fan on the boards I'm stoked on his performance. He was everywhere, more assertive, shooting, his usual amazing self in the defensive zone (seriously, people don't notice how often he makes an incredible read to break a cycle that's at risk of becoming a long shift in our end), had a couple of really nice passes. That no-looker spin pass to Garland on a puck coming around the boards onto his backhand was world class.
Still doesn't have the elite elite speed or dynamism he will regain next year, but he's smart enough to be really effective without it, and tonight he was.

Thought Joshua had a pretty bad game. I don't hold it against him at all. He started behind the 8 ball due to a cancer diagnosis and it's a hard league to catch up to. But thought Garland and Petey gave him some pucks in fairly good spaces and a lot of plays died on his stick.

Lekkerimaki is clearly more than just a big shot. He has poise and reads defenses, plays with their expectations and can hit a trailer. Like what I'm seeing but think the transformation will come next year when he's added 7 or 8 lbs.

Love the dynamic that Chytil and O'Connor's speed add to the team.

Suter is just such an incredlble swiss army knife. It's sort of sad to lose him, but neat to get an asset for him and happy to see him get a serious contract. He's been such a gift to us, and a pro scouting win, at 1.6 million. Will be happy for him to get 3.2-3.5 for another team, he's earned it.

Boeser had some good touches, a good pass, and could have easily had two goals if not for spectacular saves. But didn't look particularly dynamic. Still gets sort of buried in coverage a lot since his concussion.

Sherwood and Blueger are such a nice buzz saw 4th line option. Hoglander can be, but my God does he make some unconscionable decisions. There was a play where we got a bit stuck in our zone, finally worked the puck out to him under heavy pressure and he throws it into double coverage while standing still into the middle of the ice. Gave the Ducks another shift in our end. The play, and a 4th line beer leaguer would have known this, was to dump it and get the f*** off of the ice. He must give our coaching staff conniptions because he can play 3 or 4 games that range from effective to 'didn't hurt you and did some good things' and then do something you just can't believe.

DeBrusk owned up to it in his interview but he made a couple of terrible passes on the pp. Full credit for his goal and is a fast reliable player when he isn't scoring.

Hronek is deeply underrated by some on here. Moves the puck really well and is really smart and incisive defensively. Sort of plays D like Bieksa did in that he doesn't read passively, he finds the right moment and moves toward the pressure.

Soucy looked like he was having fun out there and effective. Good to see whether we trade him or not. I like him as a player and it has sucked to watch him struggle.

EP25 is clearly an NHL Dman with pretty decent upside. It's so cool that he has fallen into our laps. I didn't think he'd be doing this for at least a year if ever and we still have Willander to come.

MPetey is quietly so effective. I love the trade and signing of him. Just a wet blanket on anything the opposition wants to do.

Forbert: keep him. So good on the PK, an ideal 7 or 6.5 D man.

In fact, even without Hughes we probably have a top 12 D core or so based on depth and guys playing in their correct slot. Add Hughes and it's top 5. Incredible to see this go from an absolute achille's heel to a strength in like a month and a half.

Lankinen didn't see much action, got bad bounces against, and had some uncharacteristically shaky looking moments but was by no means bad and was good enough to win.

Bring on Minnesota.

I love the trade deadline and the stretch of a playoff race. I'm really stoked to see what happens for us, and around the league as well.
Great takes for what I skimmed through.

Ducks tried very hard - very strange they let the Canucks blast at them all through the first but they probably didn't have a choice.
A lot of players on both sides were flopping on the ice but I don't think it was as bad as the two Los Angeles rinks due to the heat down there. Ducks were just tired and often couldn't think straight on top of not great ice for both sides.
Also, probably a lot of tieing up each other.

Canucks also won by crashing the net. Amazing saves by Gibson in the first - especially that reach behind grab - but it just wasn't enough.
I think the Ducks had a small argument with the 4 skaters in the crease only because Sherwood hit his back while trying to climb off the crossbar, and I would guess that's what they officials on the ice and in Toronto were discussing but ultimately ruled it a goal because it was unintentional, he was trying to get out of the crease and not knock the net off, and (what they ruled) he was pushed in their by the Defense.

It's good to see Pettersson actually have a battle level as a follow-up to that interview where he took some accountability for his play. He actually looked like a guy who wanted to drive play and have the puck on his stick, which has been a pretty rare occurrence over the past year. Liked that line with Garland and Joshua, though more so Garland was effective.

Lankinen was having rebound issues yesterday, which happens to him from time to time. He really kicked out a juicy one right in the slot on that second goal.
This is exactly what I was thinking. He put his money where his mouth is. I just worried he would injure himself trying too hard but he won all his faceoffs and competed - especially in his own zone.
Like Henrik before him, he again got double teamed by defense but was still able to make an impact.

Could it be that Allvin made it known to Petey earlier this week that he wouldn't be traded? Basically, he now knows he'll likely be here for the rest of his career. Decided that, "OK, let me give this my full effort and live up to my contract".

Since Monday he's been the first guy on the ice and the last one to leave.

I kept thinking about how Canuck fans would be reacting to that 4 guys in the crease goal and laughed. Also finally! Blueger. Time to go on a scoring streak eh?

I still lament what could have been: Miller and Pettersson at the top of their games, two more DPeteys added through trade and attrition, Boeser rebounding from the concussion being a finisher on Miller's line, Demko maybe not being broken, etc.

Guess we'll see what management can build moving forward. Still, it's such a gut shot how all this weird, interpersonal crap and injuries played out.

One time where the GameScore card doesn't really match the eye test. Didn't expect to see Hronek at the very bottom. Thought he had a strong game

Sometimes the stats just don't account for all of the variance within human behavior.

Although the card still makes the point that the team played well overall. This was more like the few games right before Four Nations so hope we build on it.

I have no idea how Hronek is rock bottom in that performance card, sometimes the stats

I'm far from his biggest fan, but that stupid bar chart couldn't be more incorrect. It's why you have to actually watch the games. Stats are nothing without context.

I find it funny @MarkusNaslund19 compared him to Bieksa earlier. I had a love-hate thing with Juice as well.

You don't like to read too much into things likes face off %, especially in one game, but how do you go from a 45% FO all season, to an 80% night? I don't recall him ever having a face off night like this. Surely something has happened?

Tocchett threatedlned to take away his video games.
