Let's say that Pettersson is injured to some extent. To his defenders, who's to say he'll even recover? And if he does, who's to say this isn't an injury that won't follow him or be at risk to reoccur later on?

And perhaps he'll be one of those players that will pick up more injuries down the line because of his slight build and without escapability like, say a Patrick Kane. Wouldn't you want to hop off the train?

I suppose that's the risk, but now with Miller gone, I don't think we have much choice but to pray that he returns to form.
No one knows if he'll recover. The problem is you don't win a cup without a 1C and he won't return a 1C right now in a trade.

You can trade him for a bunch of crappy pieces that don't move the needle right now and congrats, you've got a bunch of mid pieces and no 1C. You've locked yourself out of contending.

Alternatively you bank on him recovering after a proper offseason and if he does you have a 1C again. If he doesn't you have to accept a slightly worse version of the previously shitty mid offer that didn't move the needle anyways. The risk reward is pretty clear for keeping him and that's why a very smart, very cap conscious team in Carolina keeps trying to get him.

If he's bad next year then I'll jump on board the trade him train because I will then believe the injury is permanent. If he's back to normal not even his most ardent hater will say a peep about moving him.

This is one of the biggest mysteries in NHL history if his game doesn't return to form.

I have not heard one theory that makes any sense. The only thing I can speculate is some sort of phobia/performance anxiety that has destroyed his mental game.

I mean if you're looking for one explanation that explains everything, tendonitis that didn't heal last year and ruined his offseason (both facts) that quickly reaggravated this year (not fact and not yet supported by anything other than how he plays) explains everything perfectly.

It just depends how believable you find it that this could be the case. It was easy for most people to figure out that this was the problem last year. It's harder to believe it's still the main issue now and we haven't gotten much insight this season into his issues other than conclusive proof that mgmt and coaching are not reliable sources for what's going on with EP.

Sharks game plan is to try to survive D zone pummeling and then get odd man rushes.

Would say that's not great given they've won 5 in 27 but they're tied in score and shots 🤷‍♂️
