Post-Game Talk: [GM49] Canucks defeat Blues | 5-2 | Garland(2), Miller, Suter, & Myers | Prymer Myers

Tonight’s Game
  • Big game; was a 4 point game
  • Good start; power play was good; started on time
  • The 1st period set them up for the game
Garland
  • Is a consistent hockey player; drags people into the fight
Myers
  • Thought he was one of the best players on the ice; was terrific
  • Really miss a guy like that when he’s out
  • His breakouts were great
  • Worked really hard in the three games he missed
Lankinen
  • Didn’t notice he got an assist until later
  • Have given them a great start against Washington
  • Is pretty solid for them right now
Goalie Interference Call
  • First thought it would be called a goal but their video guy told him it wouldn’t be a goal
  • Their video coach is pretty good at that

You mean 1 good team. Since when are the Blues a good team? They have an worse record than us, not even one close to PPG player and their best player is Kyrou. Even in our current state we should beat them most of the time. We should beat the Preds and if we beat Dallas then you can say that we are back on track.

In fairness, VAN dropped the ball against BUF. No win is assured. They've been too up and down this year to rely upon.

Value for the win. Glad they scored more than 2 goals. Onto the next.

Gonna be interesting what mgmt does if this team starts to get reasonably healthy, starts to play well and put wins together.

Do they still wait it out on EP or JT?

Gives them more leverage atleast.

Absolute roller coaster.
I wouldn't trade them at all, they are adults earning millions of dollars commiting to this team for years! They can figure it out themselves.

On the game:

Pettersson: Again didn't have a 5 alarm chance, I thought, but had 7 shots. He keeps doing that, things will turn. Held onto the puck a few times, which was nice to see. Still not there yet though.

Myers - One of best games I've seen him play. Made the right play often and was aggressive. Full value.

Forbort - This guy is working himself into re-sign territory. The point shots hitting shin pads is a bit maddening, but his overall play is still decent/good. Limited puck mover.

Miller - Still erratic, but made the offensive play or two they needed. The fight was nice to see. Shows heart.

Garland - Was the engine tonight. Just relentless all over the ice. Forechecked, supported plays and played with guile. Hell of a game.

DEP - Did he just steal Juulsen's job? Way better this game than last. Getting comfortable.

Lankinen - Solid game. Looked busier than I thought he should otherwise be. A lot of movement. If he can hold to this state while Demko comes back, good things on the horizon.

Hoglander - Careless penalty. It just ruins all the good work he does. Forechecked well, but was defensively inept. They should put DeBrusk on the RW on this line. He could cover where Karlsson will not and they may get something more done offensively.

Suter - Tocchet loves this guy. Used sometimes at the expense of Miller/Pettersson. I think he stays at C from here on out.

Heinen - Doesn't hurt you, but I'm not sure he helps either. He's in the play, does the right thing, but will constantly disappoint in execution.

When they make the little plays on the breakout, they're fine. When they're desperate to have one player reach the red line to dump it in, that's when they're in trouble. They did the former this game. Let's hope they carry it over to NSH.

We always make a joke out of Myers. But suddenly when he's gone the team is just missing something I can't quite put my finger on. Myers back and the train keeps rolling. Most controversial Canucks player ever but man lets put some respect on his name!

He's actually largely been very good since about the all-star break last year, including most of the playoffs. He still has his brainfarts, but he's generally been good.

I mean he gets criticism largely because of his clear ability, size and his contract (which was only an issue because Benning mismanaged the cap so badly).

Overall he's clearly better than most of the other guys were have and always has been. His average shift he's better than anyone else in our bottom 4. The problem is his mistakes are glaring ones, sometimes game losing one's. The gap between his obvious ability and his mistakes are what disappoint people.

It's like how we hear about Miller's missed backchecks and not Hoglanders. The expectation level is different. But people need to accept that the reason Myers has that higher bar is the same reason he was overpaid, he's actually got a lot of upside. He just will have a nice quiet tidy game then go full Chaos Giraffe on us for some reason.

I've never hated the guy, he just frustrates me because... he's a huge right handed defenseman who is clearly smart and has good hands and a good shot and good skating ability. Just doesn't put it all together enough. People rag on Pettersson because we've seen how elite he can be just a year ago and in flashes this year (including only a few games ago). If Myers was actually as bad as Sbisa we wouldn't even talk about him much.

I've said it before, but he fills a bit of the Dad role that was lost with Tanev. One of the few Vets that can speak up over all the noise and really is a consummate professional.

That being said, he played 23min and if you try that more than a game or two, Bad Myers will rear his head without a doubt.

Keep him at 19ish TOI and reap the benefits.

Tonight's result pretty well cinches it.......the Canucks will ride Lankinen until he either drops from fatigue, or his performance badly slips.

With 34-games remaining, the Canucks are already into 'must-win; territory most every night. They just can't afford letting Demko continue his training camp rehab.

He'll need some breaks. We already tired him out once this season.

myers is the missing ingredient for all the flake he gets here with his occasional brainfarts he's a calming influence on the defence core. first two game winning streak since november/december
Only in the context of Hronek being back. Myers was there and playing significant (too many) minutes while Hronek was out and it wasn't pretty. Right now he can be limited to minutes that don't strain him too much and cause those mistakes. Hronek doesn't have to be great to be, on average, enough to massively improve us just by taking 20 minutes that Myers or Juulsen would've played. Makes Myers better for sure.
