Tonight’s Game
  • Get back to some structure
  • When things don’t go there way, he sees guys running out of position
Line-Up
  • Have a bunch of game-time decisions
  • A couple of guys are banged up and doesn’t know who will be in the line-up
  • Sherwood’s injury isn’t serious but is enough that he might not play
Elias Pettersson, Not That One
  • D-Petey will play tonight
  • Love his enthusiasm
  • Can skate, is physical, can move the puck, and those are the attributethey need
  • Want to give him a chance
  • He’s been up with the team for 3-4 days, has got a practice in, and can’t be scared to face the best team in the NHL
  • Has characteristics that they want on defence
Joshua
  • Is close; might play in the next two games
  • Needs to get some more contact in practice
  • Will be positive force when he gets back in
Line Combos
  • They have a group of players that are really trying hard and another that is struggling to get going; need to get both groups going in the same direction
  • Trying different things
  • Talked to Hoglander and is hoping he can give his linemates some juice
  • Suter with Garland is usually pretty good
  • Some gametime decisions so the lines may change
Starting Goalie
  • Lankinen starting
Washington Capitals
  • Played them a week or two ago; was a hard fought game and is looking for the same effort
  • Last game was a playoff-style game
  • Are a big team and are structures
  • Similar to the Canucks last season; not bothered to be playing from behind or in a tie game; don’t get nervous

one mistake by d-petey and he's gonna get rathboned out of town too

yeah, the main thing with d-Petey is whether he can handle the speed of the NHL.

If can handle the forecheck speed and make decent outlet passes, his skating/physicality will shine.

If he can't then he'll have a similar career like Sbisa.

I would be very pleased if the following D-lineup turns out to be their best group,

Hughes-Hronek
D-Petey - Soucy
Forbort - Myers

at lease until Willander comes in and they acquire Top-4 new guy, then:
Hughes-Hronek
New Guy - Soucy
D-Petey - Willander
Forbort - Myers

this team could really use the story of guy like D-Petey coming in and showing he can play well at this level right now. I don't expect it but I would love to see it.

Really think Demko should start. More or less he needs to find his game or we are screwed, so might as well figure that out. Lankinen has played enough that we know that hes going to be great from the eye test but statistically be below average.

Demko is usually one of the top 5 in the league in high danger save percentage when hes healthy. Lankinen is third worst among goalies who have played 25 games at under 80%. His mid danger save percent is below average. But hes one of the top goalies in low danger save percent at nearly .960. So he saves the stuff he should but is one of the worst at making the saves (which isnt what the eye test says).

Also for the record, this is a team that USED to give up a lot of high danger chances, but of the goalies that have played 25 games, Lankinen has faced the fewest high danger chances (again, the eye test makes it seem like that cant be true). If Georgiev didnt exist then we'd have the guy with the worst underlying numbers.

We need Demko to find his game and make those high danger saves again, or we are cooked (or continue to be cooked). So I'm for him playing every game he can til its clear he does or doesnt have it and know how our trade deadline can go. Having the worst goaltending in the league 5 on 5 the same season that our goalie coach decides to step away from on ice coaching...seems to not be surprising at all.

I agree with the sentiment, but he just came off what 4 in a row? I would give him the night off.

I wonder why the team can't play with structure?

Let's see, the defense can't get it out of their zone, can't make a first pass, can't hit a player in transition, can't help maintain possession in the offensive zone, can't defend entry into their own zone and can barely defend in the niche situations they're theoretically built to handle.

Forwards get the choice of either playing properly and having it constantly backfire on them, or cheating to cover for the defense which blows the "structure" RT wants.

Better publicly call out JT+EP again that's probably the solution.

Makes the most sense to play DPetey with Soucy or Hronek, in reality he'll play with VD and they'll get buried. VD being a cockroach will survive from getting scratched while DP will get sent down.

Coaching coaching coaching..its Tocchet..this team is not made for dump and chase and bang and crash
How has it worked so far...it hasn't
His idea to fix everything is to mix lines on a nightly basis. The team is not going anywhere with him behind the bench.

EP40 3rd line C?

Oh man the organization is not sugar coating their opinion of his play or behaviour. It’s about time.

Exactly.

When the team can't transition the forwards are overcompensating for it and basically sacrifice any type of speed through the neutral zone.

It results in a lot of dump ins, so practically no offense off the rush. And after a marathon to just gain possession in the offensive zone, If its not Hughes/Hronek, you can't trust the defenseman to make any sort of play on the blueline.

Maybe the Caps are too relaxed and chilled out tonight to give us their best effort. Wish my expectations weren't so low.
I hope D-Petey has a solid game tonight, no matter what the outcome.

If you're Pettersson after finding out this team tried to trade you again, are you playing hard for them?

Like, he's put in the defensive effort thus far, even if the offense has been bad. But now, maybe they lose the defense too?

It's time for Pettersson to decide: Quit on this management for good or show them they're idiots.
