Yep. It was a smart play by Garland. The Oilers had possession with 20 second left and the canucks were starting to run around. Even if the refs arm goes in the air the Oilers are not going to give the puck up for the whistle like they would if there was closer to a minute left (to get the 6-4). That little amount of time left puts you at the mercy of the faceoff. Lose that faceoff and no chance to tie the game (Draisatl and McDavid were under 40% combined for faceoffs in the game). So for Garland the best play is to keep McDavid from doing anything. Which he did.

This is the part I don't understand. They played hardball with no longterm plan if Zadorov called their bluff.

4.6Mx5 is a reasonable contract for him. Now I'd be fine with it if they had other options, but it really feels like they didn't and just thought "Eh, maybe we can find more Soucys."

We've seen how well that worked out, especially Soucy being considered a long term fixture.

I don't really have issue with the Forbort deal, it's relatively cheap and we need defensive depth pretty badly. The rest, though, yeah looks like quite a bit of unneeded dollars. While the offseason work was poor on the blue line, a lot of the underperformance is related to players regressing that were already here.

$4.6 mill x 5 is fair, but he was a UFA, so that always bumps it up into the uncomfortable range. Same with the Joshua contract. Didn't love $3.25 mill aav but he was going to get that kind of money as a UFA.

Not easy to always find hits in free agency. That's the reality of the NHL.

Interesting Pettersson has been elevated to Miller's usual spot ... I don't hate that second line though. The fact we're playing Friedman with Hughes is freaking gross.

yep might as well get rid of the F in UFA...you pay a term and AAV tax
 
So if we overlook all this drama, this game is quite huge. Easily winnable, and then a rematch against the McDavid-less :laugh: Oilers. Could really get the team on a bit of a roll.

It's understandable since you don't live here and probably haven't been to a downtown fine dining place lately, but much of the crowd at these restaurants are definitely not ordinary joes.
Especially for the higher end places with VIP tables that Zadorov would likely go to

Last Game & Tonight’s Game
  • That game is in the past and have a big challenge tonight
  • Sabres have a lot of dangerous players
  • Took the puck to the net more that he’s seen and moved their feet
  • Key to offense is to get inside the interior and then make your play
Winning Streak
  • Would give confidence; help them loosen up and relax
  • Uneven play has hurt their confidence
Line-Up
  • Friedman will play
  • Hronek will be playing on a couple different pairs depending on the situation; will sometimes play with Hughes and other times lead his own pairing
  • Demko starting; needs to get a run of games
Lindy Ruff & the Sabres
  • Is a great coach and a good friend
  • Have a lot of pieces
Suspensions
  • Tought job for the referees and George Parros
  • Does not like the grandstanding; doesn’t want McDavid to get suspended and they play him on Thursday; it happened and you deal with i, the same way for Myers; a lot of people are grandstanding and ripping the referees; Wes McAuley is one of the best referees in the league; there were a couple of holds and they didn’t get called but there was 10 seconds left; mentions the missed high-stick earlier; just get over it
  • Garland just wants to win; when there’s 10 seconds left you just starting holding people; there’s nothing wrong with that strategy
  • Garland got punched in the head; it’s not a tit-for-tat and everyone is blowing this out of proportion
Outside Noise
  • When players arrive at the rink, just worry about your job
  • Worry about the team identity and what you can do to help the team win
  • Has krept into the locker room and that has lead to uneven play
Playing the Right Way
  • Always do positive video, in response to showing the players the 1st period against the Oilers
  • Says they played great against the Maple Leafs and that didn’t help
  • Can’t get too high or too low; can’t be a roller coaster
  • Need to forget about the Edmonton game and just focus on Buffalo
Miller
  • Their relationship is always the same
  • Very intuitive and wants to know stuff
  • Right or know stuff what they should do on plays
  • Would rather have a player that asks questions than a player that just sits there and doesn’t say anything
