that’s why he’s the best unironically

he never pushes buttons etc

drops a bunch of small nuggets, overall nice dude who’s held down a pretty significant role within the media for a while

also has a pretty good relationship with this current management while remaining objectively critical, as seen by the fact rutherford’s last interview was with him
I always thought Drance (who I probably like more than most) tried too hard to be the next Botchford when he rejoined the media.

Meanwhile Johnston has best replaced a lot of what made Botchford great but isn’t as prolific or as much of a pot stirrer so he flies under the radar a bit.

PDG was a MAN tonight ("I'm 40!"). Created 2 goals off his forecheck. If he could bring that energy all the time he would be a top 12 mainstay

Soucy looks like he got Souce'd up in the parking lot before the game. Just casually letting guys slip behind him in the neutral zone for 2 on 1s and not even reacting

Forbort is a shutdown AHL d-man and doesn't belong on this roster. There's a minimum puck handling threshold required to be an NHL defenseman and Forbort doesn't meet it.
Passing back to Desharnais and Forbort at the point in the O-zone tonight was an instant giveaway to the other team

Juulsen does his frustrating thing again where he plays like a solid #6 but makes 1 or 2 crucial errors. Bad giveaway on the 1st goal, then took himself out of the play making a hit on the 2nd goal leading to Heinen botching covering for him.
Then obviously the dumb penalty at the end. Time and place to try and be a tough guy - under 2 mins left in a tie game AIN'T IT

Willander is the hero this team needs but the team might be out of it by the time his college season is done

Soucy is not a 6, but he absolutely needs to play next to a 2 or 3 to be a competent #4.

Last season’s blueline when healthy wasn’t top tier, but Cole was a better puck mover than these other plugs playing on the right rn witn Juulsen and Desharnais, while Zadorov was a lot better than Forbort as a puck mover.

They need two blue liners and to shift Forbort / Juulsen into 7/8 roles.
So much this.

Last year's blueline was acceptable at best.

We downgraded significantly from last season and we have an injury to our #2 which is only exposing the d-core even further.

This is completely on management. The fact that they found it acceptable to enter this season with this group of defencemen is very concerning.

Tonight’s Game
  • Gave the Senators a couple powerplays early and fell behind 2-0
  • A couple of players were nervous at the beginning; weren’t handling the puck properly
  • Never want to chase the game
  • That shorthanded goal can’t happen; was an egregious play
  • Miller didn’t pick up his guy, on the shorthanded goal; would have had him if he just stayed back
  • Told Boeser to relay to the other on the ice to make sure to reload because the Senators are going to “take off”
  • Have to be focused at all times
  • A lot of good things he liked but gave up 5 odd-man rushes
  • When there’s a 50/50 puck anywhere in the offensive half-wall, you have to reload; can’t gamble because they aren’t that type of team; will have to do some digging on that
  • Can’t play river hockey
PDG
  • A lot of energy; chasing guys down
  • He’s doing the things he’s being asked to do
  • Is a hard forechecker
Hughes
  • Wants to drive play; knows he’s the main driver
  • Gives everything he’s got every game
Managing Frustration
  • Frustration happens when you’re not prepared for certain situations
  • Have to know what is going on ahead of you
  • Too many times where guys miss their man and don’t take him
  • They get lost in the moment sometimes
  • Need to cover for guys when they make mistakes
  • Have made to many mistakes this season at big moments
Miller
  • Noted that in his pregame media he mentioned that the media should request Miller and Petterson; Miller didn’t come out and talk but Pettersson did; was asked if Miller was banged up but Tocchet doesn’t know
  • Doesn’t know where Miller went
OT
  • Was asked if reloading and having your man is the same in overtime and answers with “Yeah…yeah. You got me on that one too”

The response he gives is becoming more and more like a whole lot of words saying a whole lot of nothing. Not too surprised, as the team's been having the same problems for quite some time now.

Something has to give, our results and underlying numbers are lottery worthy when Hughes is on the bench. Some of the blame rests on management for assembling such an ineffective and poorly constructed defense core, but the fact that Tocchet continues to sit the only other effective puck mover on our roster in Brannstrom is mind boggling. Really starting to erode my faith in the coaching staff.

I just found it, holy shit, man

Good god.

Whoever asked him "so it hasn't been a distraction?" after he answered the first stupid question should be fired for sheer incompetence. He literally just told you his thoughts on the whole thing. You really think he's going to change his mind in five seconds?

Good on Petey for just walking away at that point.

Doesn’t know where Miller went.. to the showers and exiting the arena thats what. damn millers backcheck was awful. no speed. why not put sherwood and petey with hughes to start overtime.. losing to san jose seems inevitable. alvin and rutherford must do something quinn hughes looks tired now and more frustrated as the games go along.

God I wish I could be paid 8 figures a year to play a sport and throw temper tantrums

well this seems to be the issue, right? No-one appears to have told/warned EP and JT that the coach told the media to speak to EP and JT about it. Obviously JT hasn't even shown up which isn't good enough but is hardly surprising

It seems post-JT's leave, the team's official position has changed on this whole thing: what has previously been hinted upon and likely dismissed by the team as a nothing burger is now canon - JT and EP have problems. That's probably why Friedman has brought it into the spotlight, he got permission to do so, and now everyone else can talk about it. Ok, whatever, I don't have a view point on that. But the team doing that but seemingly not warning JT and EP that this was going to happen feels like a risky strategy to me. Surely someone in the PR team could have fed JT and EP some lines to say in response to questions that the team has, essentially, given the green light to be asked to them

So sick of Petey

Overpaid soft wimp

Guy has had 3 seasons to build up his body and strength and he not could bother one bit

Looks like a baby deer on the ice

Trade him away

Team has quit on Tocchet and clearly he has zero control of the dressing room

Move on, he was never qualified to coach this team in the first place

i respect him more for trying to talk than i would for hiding and id hope everyone else does give him that grace

Oh for sure. I’m just thinking PR should have stepped in and said no (like how they kept JT out), or as Rypper mentioned to at least prepare for the inevitable.

Really depressing to go from such a bomb of a team to a putrid pile of shit in one year.

Regardless of the drama that may or may not exist I think management has failed to supply this team with an adequate defense. And that can be a really compounding effect where you try and work yourself out of a slump and just have no support from other players.

The numbers when Hughes isn't on the ice are absolutely mind boggling. I think you have to pull the trigger and try and trade a really valuable piece like Lekk for some kind of stud top4 like Byram.

The whole situation would be mitigated by like 75% if Pettersson was playing like he's paid to.

He ought to have like a dozen more points, which means the team likely has around a half dozen more points in the standings, and everything would feel a lot better.

I've been complaining loudly about how incompetent this defense is and how they make it hard to generate offense but there are 6 other players that have as many or more goals than Pettersson and they all play with those same D-men (and most of them aren't stapled to PP1 like Pettersson is). Pettersson had a shot today coming down the wing with speed and space from like the faceoff circle and he shot it into the crest. If that was McDavid or Draisaitl or Matthews or Mackinnon or anyone else paid like Petey is, you'd almost be surprised if they didn't score.

I'm not saying Miller shouldn't share some of the blame as his game isn't where it needs to be either and he's obviously part of the off-ice issue, but if Pettersson's play wasn't best described as somewhere in between "non-existent and decent" for the last 80 or so games it just wouldn't be as big of an issue.

I don't give a f*** how good he's been defensively, and this is coming from someone who will always have a defense-first mentality when it comes to sports. Him making a big play / scoring a big goal on the regular is simply mandatory at his price point. He is the highest paid player on the ice out of both teams on most nights yet on most nights you could probably name like 10 guys that were more noticeable than him. He needs to figure it out.

I think the Pettersson/Miller thing is probably a sideshow to the real issues, including the defense being constructed like shit, and then for basically a year now this forward group having serious problems generating shots and scoring chances.

There's a good Joe Sakic quote: "Winning does solve everything".

Last season they were winning. As long as you are winning, everything else is trivial and you can move past it. This season they are struggling so it's the opposite, everything is brought to the forefront.

If they can get the right defencemen to facilitate breakouts and get the team away from being 100% reliant on Quinn Hughes to generate any sort of offense, then these huge issues will become smaller and then solve themselves.

Anybody on this team other than Hughes, Sherwood and Boeser should be up for grabs

Given Boeser’s expiring contract, he would also be trade bait unfortunately

This isn't how professionals handle themselves. Hughes would NEVER do something like that.

Both Miller and Pettersson look like two of the more immature personalities in the NHL, on and off the ice. Miller seems much more composed in off-ice interviews but is prone to on-ice tantrums and lapses in details/defense. Pettersson has had far too many instances where he's come off as a brat, while mopping on the ice when things don't go his way, but seems to hold his composure on the ice much better than Miller.

Both guys are very frustrating, especially since they can both be so good at their best. But, to be honest, neither guy seems to be an ideal leader for a franchise.
