Juulsen is so f***ing bad... put Brannstrom out there. We literally have our second best puck moving defenseman out with injury.
Brannstom has his limitations, but if he's any worse than Forbort or Juulsen out there, then I'm turning in my hockey stick in for a pool cue.

The other context is that the Sharks are the second worst possession team in the league this year, the worst if you score adjust.

The team did an ok job in limiting the quality of chances against but a team with Cup aspirations can’t be on the ropes for 2/3rds of their ES ice time against a bottom feeder.

To me it shows the bottom 4 is fundamentally incapable of making a breakout pass, regardless of opposition.

As long as the other team simply exists, this team is going to get hemmed in their own end regardless of the quality of opposition whenever Hughes isn’t out there. The only difference quality of opposition makes at this point is the quantity of chances against.

Something has to change unless they’re content with a mediocre product until next season.

A close 'second' was the reporter who asked, "how important was it for Heinen to stand up for his team-mate?"

I mean what's Tocchet's going to say: "it really wasn't important at all, and we'd rather he had turned turtle out there".

A beter way to answer "I expect that from my players. Like, we battle out there. I expect the best from myself, I expect the best from my players. I expect the best from the fans. And most nights we get it, not all. Everyone's gotta be in that battle, or no one will be"

I think Tocchet actually answered the question in a similar way.

Maybe it's just me, but I just cringe when a reporter asks a 'How important is it' question. How important is it to score the first goal? How important is to get off to a strong start? How important is it to have a good penalty kill? How important is it to string wins back-to-to back?

I mean if you proport to be a hockey journalist, how important is it to not actually ask a really dumb question?

The thing is, I don't think any of the bottom 4 are necessarily bad, we just have too many of them. Preferably, you'd pair a one of these defenceman with a puck mover. But when you have, for example, Desharnais and Forbort out at the same time (horrifying), they start playing out of their depth (trying to move the puck up instead of staying back). It just makes thing so much worse.

No kidding. Me too.

Reporters are some of the laziest SOBS you'll ever meet. The bad ones are, anyway. And they don't always do bad work. But when your thing is relationships with the players, you only stand to kill your olive branch or demonize the player which what Patrick Johnston did and why he'll never regain my trust or respect. He didn't as Petey said "read the room". Was Petey right? f*** no. But neither was Patrick, who instigated. 2 minutes in the box, Patrick.

Tonight’s Game
  • Sharks are a fast team; good future; Celebrini is a hell of a player
  • Powerplay was big; Demko solid; Everybody contributed tonight
  • Hughes is dealing with some stuff & is really proud of him
Myers & Heinen
  • As a coach you like them sticking up
Pettersson
  • Got banged up in the 2nd; tried one shift in the 3rd
  • Have the Christmas break; doesn’t think his it’s too bad
  • Made two great shots; things like that loosen people up; hopefully this will kickstart him and he can enjoy himself
  • Liked his celebration after scoring
Team Communication
  • Talked about regroups before the game; have struggled with this before
  • Attacked with a lot more speed
  • One of Hoglander’s best games; wanted the puck
  • Regroups were better
  • Can get better at their forecheck
  • Defensive zone coverage was pretty good
Third Period
  • When the other team is making a push, still need to make plays
  • Can’t be happy just punting the puck down the ice
  • Need to change some of their practice habits
  • Coaches need to make drills where they put pressure on guys to make a play rather than just throw it away
Winning Into the Break
  • It’s nice; told the guys after the game that the waves aren’t 12’ but are 4’ or 5’
  • When you start a game a game thinking to much you make mistakes
  • Relax and don’t think too much

Maybe it was just my feed, but found the video quality sucked on the main overhead view, but then was nice from the closer to the boards camera angles.

Pettersson has played more minutes with Hughes than Miller has, and about the same on a per game basis.

But score adjusted Pettersson has a 51% GF% without Hughes on a 53% xGF%, while Miller is at a 33% GF% on a 39% xGF%. Similar o-zone starts for the two away from Hughes.

Hughes’ numbers don’t change much no matter who he plays with.

Pettersson has played with Hughes more total minutes this year due to Miller's absence, yes. With both in the line-up, I would like Pettersson with Hughes as a 5-man set.

Is the xGF% listed to suggest Miller has been relatively unlucky (on ice SV%), has been the weaker player, or that Pettersson gets close to his expected GF even without Hughes?

To emphasize that Miller’s poor / Pettersson’s solid GF% numbers away from Hughes are not just unlucky / lucky.

I actually agree, the alternative cameras were good for me, but the main ice feed was crappy.

I don't know...
We know Myers is the furthest thing from consistent. He made that huge hit tonight, which was great, but he can't pass it out of the zone. When he skates it, 8/10 times he gets into trouble. He should really be in the bottom 2.

Forbert literally can't handle the puck. Can't take a pass. Can't stick handle. Can't make a pass. It's hard to watch. I give him some grace cuz he hasn't played much, but i don't think there's much to work with. He should be the 7th or 8th.

Juulsen is ok for a 6. Inconsistent but can at times make a smart pass to get out of the zone.

Desharnais is oddly the most steady of the towers, but isn't skating it out of his zone and isn't making any clever passes either. Nowhere near a top 4. 6 or 7.

Soucy needs a good partner to get him back to form. He's got some depth to his game in terms of offensive ability but is over his head right now. 4 / 5.

None of those guys have any kind of escapability in their own zone. Desperately need another d man that can escape and carry/pass it out of the zone.

Miller's GF% with Hughes is higher than Pettersson's own (61.29 vs 45.5), which doesn't favour Pettersson in the comparison this year. Last year, Pettersson was better (75.00 to 57.89).

More time to normalize this percentage will help normalize the perception of each player's play with Hughes.

As it stands, choosing Miller to go best-on-best as a 5-man unit doesn't make sense anyway. It should be Pettersson. (Unless you want to hide Miller)

I missed this one as I don't have Amazon Prime.

But thank the heavens we got to see a vintage Petey rocket wrister. Few things I love more than watching a forward stare down a goalie, pick a corner, and just blast it past him.

Ken Daniels is a really good announcer. I remember liking him when he was on the third team with CBC like 20 years ago, and he does a good job for the Red Wings. I also think Hickey is a sharp evaluator. Mostly only seen him the odd time I catch an Islanders broadcast (they also have a rad announcer).
