What a gutsy win, nice to see. Hughes man this guy is on another level than everyone, just insane to watch him every game. As for Pettersson credit where credit due guy had 3 assists can't ignore that, doesn't mean I question some of his opportunities he had to shoot the puck, but he got 3 helpers good for him. Lankinen what a steal of a signing, Nashville probably kicking themselves in the butt for letting him go.

Honestly. If a team is willing to trade a late 1st + prospect for Lankinen once Demko is healthy, I think you have to take that deal. That would be found money, and the guy isn't resigning after this year as he's due for a massive raise.

But you're gambling that Demko will be back to form and stay that way, because Silovs is not the answer.

Absolutely not. People were saying similar things about Casey DeSmith last year, and it was an equally wild take.

Team's with contending aspirations don't trade their high performing players just because they might not re-sign here. With Demko's health concerns, there's almost no world where trading Lankinen makes sense.

People fawned here over Silovs performance in the playoffs last year, but if they had this version of Lankinen they probably beat the Oilers. Ain't no way I'm trading that away if the team is on track to make the playoffs.

Hughes over 30 mins again. Honestly worrying me a lot that he's become such a pivotal part of the team and is playing that much. We NEED to find a way to lower his minutes a bit and also lower Myers' as well. Not sure how that's done but we need at least one defenseman and soon. If Hughes wears out and/or gets hurt we are screwed. Let's not McDavid him and play him til the wheels fall off.

The guy is the entire team right now and I think if you can shave 5-7mins off of his defensive time he can stay fresh and keep it up for longer even. You can't shelter Juulsen and Deharnais etc and keep Hughes and Myers from getting overplayed. Those goals run counter to eachother.

Hughes-Myers is this team's 4th-most used D pairing this year (behind Hughes-Hronek, Soucy-Myers, Brannstrom-Desharnais) and has a 62.2 CF%, and 59.6 xGF%. That might be the biggest surprise of the season.
Having Myers anywhere near the top pairing can't be our solution, can it?

I get it, but man it feels like we would be sacrificing Hughes on the altar of some horrific giraffe religion.

Passing up shooting chances is an epidemic with team's forwards.
I mean... we got outshot all last year too (hence the PDO memes). At this point I consider it a feature and not a bug of the system. I wish they'd shoot more but it seems like this is how they plan to play. Guys like Petey would do better to just fling it on net more. He's making great passes and sets up multiple grade As every single game, but he is (arguably) the most dangerous shooter we have too, but just won't shoot. Part of it imo is that with him being the only top 6 quality center there's just always multiple guys on him and he positions himself for a passing lane and doesn't focus enough on creating a shooting lane. Mentality and circumstance probably both play in.

Plus that stupid 4 nations cup later which he will be a part of for the US team. Ideally, want him to rest like Hronek (his nation isn’t in it).

Have to watch his practice days now. Give him some maintenance or off days to just rest and recover.

Clearly Van needs some long term answers on the back end. Probably have to roll the dice and hope they can develop from within. Really need Wallinder to be nhl ready sooner rather than later. Has to walk in like McAvoy did.

Demko, who’s not played this year because he was injured twice last season and couldn’t play. And Silovs who’s been unplayable bad.

If you can extend him, then great. If you can’t then that’s fine too. He’s not getting traded.

If it comes to be that an offer surfaced that can help us with significant defense upgrade, would it be wise to trade him at TDL?

EDIT: of course after a brutal road schedule and netted 2 wins with another near complete comeback, TSN went on to have a long segment to praise the resilience of the orc...haha no just kidding they continued to stroke Leafs' ego.

Which one of the 15 other PO teams could move a roster Dman and still be fine going into the PO?

Would need the one club that has spare D and for their goalie to be hurt down the stretch or be Carolina.

Depth in net is good to have, but like 2011 showed, only 1 can play. But, a lot has to converge correctly for your hypothetical to come true.

With the data we have now on goaltending, more than 1 should've played in 2011, especially since we had the lead in all of them. Lu's play outside of 2007 always waned as the series went on, and it's easy to see why in retrospect given his insane workload in the regular season. Schneider likely should've played in game 4 or 5 of each series we were in.

If you can afford it and have a good backup goalie, team's absolutely should be doing an 80/20 split in the playoffs. Even if Demko is back and dominant, I'm hoping management is forward thinking enough to get Lankinen in once a series to make sure Demko is fresh & healthy the whole way through.

Waaaaay over there
The dude just had cancer. Let's give him some time. He's also a notoriously slow starter.
He had months of little to no activity, not to mention whatever cancer medication/treatment issues he might have to deal with going forward. Psychologically, he might still be getting his head on straight too.
The season could be a write-off for him, honestly. Personally, I don't expect him to get up to speed for another month or more, at the very least.

Multi year extension is by far the best option.

He chose here over other teams and more money, he's not going to go from under a million to five plus aav after thirty games. (Unless the avs go nuts)

We'll find the money for him, we're obviously a tandem team now, and moving forward.
Lankinen probably should have landed a contract in the $2-3M range, just no one needing a backup had room for him. He took the Canucks offer which was probably lesser than other teams because of the opportunity to improve his standing for next years free agency. And now basically being the teams starter, it wouldn't be surprising if some team in bad need of goaltending offered something like a 3 year $15M contract. I think it's extremely unlikely the Canucks can offer him a competitive salary next summer to keep him. That said, a trade deadline deal is also highly unlikely because first you need another playoff team in direct need of a significant goaltending upgrade - something likely to keep any team out of a playoff position. No one's going to trade a first to make him their playoff backup.

The most likely outcome here is Demko comes back, we send Silvos back to the minors to continue developing, then try him as the backup again next season. He's disappointed this season but let's not forget how young Silvos is here.
