when it comes to chychrun, i feel like we tend to overlook his injury history a bit. throughout his career, he has played only one full season. aside from that one season, here’s how the rest look in terms of games played:
48
47
56
63
53
50
68

That’s over 190 missed games at the age of 26. scary stuff

some might argue that the 2023/24 season was the one where he finally reached a certain level of fitness or whatever and that things will only improve from here on. however, the evidence suggests that last season might have been the exception to the rule.

i absolutely love almost every aspect of his game, but I’m afraid i’ll get to see him on the ice too rarely, especially considering the money he currently deserves.

Cautionary tale, but what do you do, let him walk? Try to negotiate downward because of the history? In UFA, not sure that will matter to some GMs with cap to burn.

He’s going to have to want to stay here badly to take less. Let’s see where he’s at around the 60% mark of the season…

You are going to have to pay to play. We have a great position. Maybe you could put in games played incentives, but highly unlikely. All contracts are a risk. Some turn out great (Strome) and some don’t (Kuzy). Question is, is it a good gamble. Lots of numbers start with 5 and 6. Sure, would like to see 7’s and maybe even an 8. But we have seen a lot of Dee miss a lot of time!

For the record, the Caps won the Cup with Kuzy as arguably the best player under that contract. If we could guarantee the same result for a contract for Chychrun, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I don't think you can underestimate Duhaime getting a multi year deal here as well. Chychrun and him are very close childhood friends. The Capitals were playing chess signing him to a multi year deal instead of a one year. They're hoping it's like the Dowd Jensen contract situation. Stay for a team friendly deal to play with family.

Yeah, I questioned that contract for Duhaime. Smart play. but he has played to his contract too.

It’s always possible Chychrun could take a shorter deal, to allow for a larger one later. As he’s still young.

7mx3yr or something.

He’s a terrific player. Sure, he’s not available 82. Most are not. He’s already missed some this year, so the trajectory looks similar. What, 65-70 games?

He’s on a 55+ point pace, per 82. What’s that worth?
