Florida went 11-5-1 without their top two D men this season..If we can’t win because Carson Soucy isn’t in the lineup, then we’ve got major issues.

Could not agree with this more. I’m tired of the 8 years of excuses. Every f***ing team has a bad schedule, or calls go against them, and in fact we’ve been so lucky with no top players being injured for long periods of time.

It’s not the try league, it’s the get it done league.

Actually so impressive considering Montour and Ekblad are their top 2 minute eating dmen. This team would be competing with SJ for Celebrini without Hughes and Hronek.

Zero excuses for this game, even if we play Hirose and Juulsen and make no lineup changes. This is a trap game as the Sharks have actually won a few in the last while.

But jesus, can we just send Juulsen to the press box and play Friedman? Wolanin might be injured but at least get Juulsen out of the lineup.

This is why before the season I said we needed two more guys on the backend. Depth just isn't there !!

Hot start we had gives us a 99% chance at making the playoffs now so it's essentially moot but I stand by the fact we did not do everything we needed to do prior to the season.

But thankfully we have the buffer. They need to make another move here to cover for Soucy's absence.

It's always bizarre to compare the games in 'garbage time' at the tail end of a season, with the games early the following season where almost every team is still in it and bringing it every night.

Once Tocchet took over last season, the Canucks went on a tear with basically an AHL blueline. Wolanin, Juulsen, Hirose, Brisebois and even McWard played prominent roles. Maybe that's the reason the Canucks thought they could 'get by with just inking Ian Cole and Carson Soucy heading into this season.

But those games down the stretch last year against some teams that had hollowed out their rosters at the trade deadline; and were auditioning AHL players, mean virtually nothing. All it did was cost the Canucks draft position.

The first 20 games this season are a much better barometer on how many minor league d-men are too many.

Yes we could use another decent D man. But it has to be someone near league minimum or we are once again cap screwed.

And every season, Canucks fans fall for it.

Can the bois get a break?
Jesus Christ what a shit schedule
The year Torts coached it was twice as bad, they didn't get hardly any practice time for 3 months, condensed schedule. 15gms - 30ays, 13-30, 11-22, 16-30, 4-8, 14-29, 6-13. AND 13 back to backs, most on the road. Much harder.
The schedule from now to early December is rugged, not necessarily the competition but just the absence of a break. Gotta take it shift by shift.
This is when Tocchet's ice time usage could come back and bite them. Hronek and Hughes have been playing insane amounts. Miller and Pettersson the same at forward. Demko has been okay.

Not again, already are with OEL's increasing dead cap hit.

Moving Myers' cap hit, Beauvillier and Garland and/or Boeser's cap hits would alleviate all the cap issues BUT the team would need two or three prospects/picks to step into the lineup as well.

I wonder if San Jose got Roxie'd?

True that. Have to figure it out once injuries hit.

Schedule is the schedule.
Always seems that the Canucks leave themselves open to these 1 off road games if they have 2 days between a home game. Like they have Mon and Thurs for a home game yet either on Tue or Wed the nhl will stick a road game in there for them.
Works for the northeast teams, but aside from a trip to Seattle not great for Van.

2 things of note.

1. Ray Ferraro game

2. New Matte Black helemts will be worn tonight along with our black and yellow skate jersey retros.

Canucks do need both long and short term solutions to add depth on D. But, seems like around the NHL teams that want to make a move can't because they are capped out. And like they are waiting and hoping that one of their overpaid cap hit guys goes down on LTIR and they can then make a move. Feels like something that the NHL and the PA need to address and figure out how to manage this or it's just the GMs that have to manage their cap better.

Long term, where is the help coming from if it's within? Who's the closest to helping?
On the high end of Petey and Hronek's new deals, Petey may end up costing what the 2 of them current count against the cap. Leaving Hronek to absorb the savings from Myers and part of Beauv's. Probably barely have enough left to pay for minimum replacement level players for both those guys and use a part of that to cover some of the OEL buyout increase.

Any help on D comes from the remaining cap increase.

Right now, hoping Garland plays well enough to move him in a non dump situation where you take back a $2.5-$3 mill contract and can decide what to do what that returning contract. Try to move it again for a lower cap hit or opt for a buyout.

But, once you paid your top guys, that middle needs to be thinned out.

Laurence Moten looked pretty good in garbage time for the Vancouver Grizzlies is a good example of your point.
