That's what a lot of people said about Casey DeSmith last season. He'd proven himself a decent backup, but was deemed expendable by both the Pens and Canadians. And those two teams aren't exactly 'goaltending factories'.

But DeSmith parlayed his solid year in Vancouver into a three-year deal with the Stars. The Canucks were really forced to let him walk, and I suspect as good as he's been, the same future might be an inevitability for Lankinen. He's probably rapidly pricing himself out of Vancouver.

DeSmith doesn't earn much and the Canucks were trying to bring him back when it became clear that Demko could be out for a while, but I expect that he was watching the 3rd string goalie play playoff games ahead of him was the deciding factor there.

NHL teams and GMs are really f***ing terrible at evaluating goalies and continually default to making the 'safe' decision to overpay for some mediocre veteran with a history as a starter and a playoff run 4 or 5 years ago (Kuemper, Grubauer etc) over giving more opportunity to a guy who is actually performing.

Oh I agree - they are terrible and it's ridiculous that both goalies haven't gotten more of an opportunity. Worth noting though that Lankinen was earning $2m last season, which is decent backup money. Somehow he got lost in the shuffle this summer and the Canucks got lucky.

Apparently he had offers elsewhere for more money though and chose the Canucks because of the goalie coach, and the potential opportunity. Smart bet on his part that he'd get a prominent role with an injury prone starter and an inexperienced backup.

Just bumped in to RNH at a restaurant in the burbs. I did not wish him luck tomorrow.

Eating dinner with his parents. Wonder who pays?
RNH is earning $5.125m a season through 2029. He's a good local kid.....he wouldn't stick his parents with the bill.

If Joshua is back, do you think he slots in with Pettersson and Garland, or is thrown on the 4th line to ease him in?

Like unless you're having dinner with your estranged parents that treated you like garbage when you were kid, anybody who doesn't pay for their parents when they're making that kind of money needs their head examined.

I think the point is will his parents let him pay. I know some parents like mine would get offended if their kids tried to pay. It would be highly unlikely someone making that kind of money whose parents probably spent a ton on him playing hockey would not pay for dinner.

I'd be shocked if Boeser is cleared to play in Saturday's game. And with Sprong now heading down the I-5, it's the surest sign yet that Joshua will make his season debut against the Oilers.

But even then they'd still be down a forward--so likely somebody is up from Abbotsford. Probably Bains, but really hoping the roll the dice on a couple of games for Lekkerimaki.

Tocchet has mentioned that he would like to start him further down the lineup to let him acclimatize. Makes sense that they bumped Sprong from the 4th line in that case.

There are tons of variables, but when even if the best-case outcome happens (Demko comes back, plays well, looks like a 40-game platoon starter moving forward) it becomes debatable if it's a good idea to move forward with him ... there are lots of questions to be asked.

Most of the other potential outcomes (Demko gets hurt again, Demko comes back and plays horribly) would probably make it crystal-clear that moving forward with him isn't a good idea.

Obviously we don't have anywhere near all the answers yet, but this is going to be a fascinating point of interest/discussion over the next 6 months and into next summer.

Yep, I agree. Goalies are tricky. If I'm the GM I am already moving ahead with looking at other options. Chances he comes back and just slides into a starting goaltender job and it goes well are close to nil imo. The writing is on the wall and it would be prudent to get out ahead of it. Its unfortunate ... we've seen this before where a goalie will be hurt like this and then pull it all together to dominate moving forward but it's rare and I wouldn't be putting my marbles in this basket.

While the Demko thing is an interesting discussion point, it’s not something that’s going to get resolved until the end of the season at the earliest. Definitely something to monitor though.

Calling another W tonight in game 8. If Bains is called up I’m expecting a bar down clapper from him to be the game winner  Hopefully we get some (clean) animosity tonight from both sides, should be a fun one.
