There's still so much upside with this team with Lekk, Willander, and EP25 just breaking into the big club, and lots of cap space, and I'm sure Hughes sees the exact same thing. I think all it would take is to have team at least showing progress from this year for him to re sign. We don't have to be an elite team in the next year.

Maybe not elite, but I do think we'd need to be a team that's comfortably in the playoffs next year + win at least 1 round of hockey to convince him to stick around. This is someone who is a top-5 player in the world at the moment, if I were in his shoes I'd also want this team to show it has potential to win - we've heard from multiple sources that he really wants to win.

As a lifelong Canuck fan I thank the Gods in heaven that I'm alive to watch a guy like Quinn Hughes play hockey in Vancouver.

He's not just the best d-man in the NHL right now, he's one of the best to ever play the game. An almost unfathomable 32.17 minutes of ice-time tonight. It's almost like he's playing in a different league than any other guy on the ice.

Hughes is still only 25. Is it possible that we're seeing him reach an even higher level of play? Is he going to be even better in the future? How is this even possible?
I think he will break 120 points in a season in the future.

Can’t compete with crazy.

We got Suter from the bargain bin. If he’s holding out for a huge payday, we probably need to go back to the bargain bin.

Dakota Joshua is starting to shape up like a cautionary tale.
It astounds me how frequently it has to be repeated that Joshua had f***ing cancer last offseason. That he’s playing hockey half a year later, let alone in the NHL, is absurd.

They're gutsy.

They don't quit, so hopefully some of the fans can take a page out of their book.

Whatever happens. These games matter. Stretches like this, if we come through, or even come close, are times when a team discovers who they are and a group of 20 guys become a team.

For those who always tend towards the negative, I'd like to point out that I was a minority voice saying Lekkerimaki was a fantastic prospect even when he was struggling through concussion and mono and like 75% of the board were convinced he was worth a 3rd rounder or whatever.

The point is, keep your powder dry. You don't have to fly off the handle. Remember these aren't just players, they are young men who go through things they have to overcome.

A little hope won't kill ya and it's so much more fun when it pays off than it is flying off the handle with negativity and then having to tuck your tail between your legs when a good player predictably comes good again and you have to retcon yourself into 'I believed, I just had some concerns' which even you don't believe.

That aside.

Hughes is fantastic, and tonight was a neat reminder of what an absolute trump card Demko is when he's healthy.

If he can get a healthy stretch and be healthy next year, we can play an entirely more offensive style.

People blame PDO purely for the change in goals for last year. But a big part was how much we went into a defensive shell when we couldn't count on out goalie-ing every other team.

Tonight was a reminder, though he isn't all the way back yet, of what it looks like when a team has a great goalie.

I'm not 100 percent sure of his longevity, but I sure hope it can happen both for us and for him.

Hughes is a great D. And I believe that Petey will revert to form next year.

Combine these pieces with our fantastic young D, and you're missing a couple of top 6 forwards, likely including a center. 2nd line centers and scoring wingers aren't the hardest assets to accrue.

Excited about what we're building here.

I'm also 100% ok with resigning Demko and rolling him and Lankinen together. Nothing wrong with having the best goalie tandem in the league.

A good 55/45 rotation should keep them both sharp and healthy.
If our D stays good and Demko and Lankinen can play to the top of their abilities, we will be a tough team to get the better of.

You sign Hughes to a max contract and make him the highest paid player in the league if you're the Canucks. Don't even think about f***ing around there. He has a ton of leverage on the team and he's going to go wherever he wants to go, because every other GM will move heaven and earth to clear enough cap space to sign him. He's a once in a lifetime, franchise-defining talent that should have gone 1st overall in 2019. Hell, he's better than most of the 1st overalls in surrounding drafts (including his brother).

I missed the majority of the game, caught the final minute and the OT/Shoot Out, I was chiming for them to put Lekk in for the shoot out and I thought he had such a wicked snipe and I read all the comments about his goal and how nice it was........then I watched the highlights and saw the third period goal and wow

This kid can shoot, he's gonna make our power play elite in the coming years

IMO a bit of Vancouver signing Lankinen is a way to maybe get Demko on a cheaper deal (if he's re-signed) by committing to a lower workload. There's also an insurance piece if he's unable to get healthy or doesn't re-sign, but. Don't think Demko has it in him to play ~60 games per year.

In the same span (last 4 yrs) Hallebuyck has played 244 games with 143 Wins Demko has played 165 with 79 wins. And most egregious was out in our best chance to go on a run in the playoffs. Staying healthy is a skill and you pay for production. Hallebuyck is making 8.5

Hopefully Demko comes at a reasonable price and short term and they can run a 1A 1B but we'll see where it goes.

Not that confident he will be a company man if he has a bounce back next year and turning 30 to start his next contract he's gonna seek a big number. You can start to see the up and down looking a little tougher as well.

Should be an interesting negotiation

Still have no idea how Lekk made Marksteom lose the net like that
On ESPN, Steve Levy said that Markstrom had to respect Lekkermaki's forehand because I was wondering the same thing. To me, Lekk got Markstrom to commit and that's not like him.

Levy also said Quinn has his vote for MVP. Him and PK Subban could not say enough about him the whole game. I'm guessing they were watching the Rangers game.

Hughes and Boeser looked like the West Coast Express out there. They were so dangerous that NJ had to respect them the whole game.

And what a game! Wow! Both teams fighting for every inch. Timo Mier is amazing.

I hope Demko didn't pull his groin on that stretch save.

watched it on replay a bunch of times, super fast and subtle.

Also, Levy was wondering why Markstrom was so intense and then he remembered (was told in his earpiece) that Markstrom played 7 years for the Canucks. He was definitely up for the game.

All night Canucks were clearly targeting Marky on the blocker side above his shoulder. Looks like that's the book on him now.

Levy also said the Canucks were trying to shop him to NJ but he ended up in Calgary as we all know. I'm wondering if he got his timing mixed up especially after the debacle Calgary pulled missing moving him at the trade deadline when they could.

I think if he leaves, it will be to goto NJ. So if NJ are bad next couple seasons, maybe Quinn will be more incline to stay if we are constantly a playoff team?

So unfortunately I'm going to have start cheering against the Devils going forward, even though I have nothing against that team and actually like a lot of their players.

**Also if Quinn extend long term here, maybe that will entice Jack and Luke to head over as UFA's when they get there? That would be amazing, even though Jack seems to get injured every season.

I am aware that he had cancer.

He was also a league minimum player prior to signing his big contract and is now preforming like a $900k player whilst getting paid over $3m.

Teams fall in love with their own guys and overpay to keep them.

Suter is the next guy up for us, just like Joshua was, regardless of whether he had cancer or not.
