Post-Game Talk: GM 70 | Blues def. Canucks | 4-3 (OT) (Boeser x2, Sherwood) | So close.

What did he try to do? All he needed to do was reverse the puck off the boards.

He lost control of the puck.
He was poke checked and lost possession before he was tripped.

Yes and it should have resulted in a Canucks PP. Hardly a play "you just can’t have."

He also missed a pass like 35 seconds in because he was moving his feet fast enough.

Really? So what speed was he supposed to skate for the pass that misses him...?

That was not a EP1 mistake in OT. That was a guy given a pass when he was essentially covered by 3 guys and the puck bounced. He wasn't really trying to make a move or anything. The puck just didn't behave. In another world the puck behaves on his stick and he pokes the puck through to the far corner hoping for the canuck coming on the ice to get to it first.

He lost control of the puck.
Yes, I know. That’s what created the turnover. He should have just reversed the puck.

I’m not debating whether it was a ...kate for the pass that misses him...?[/QUOTE]
I think if he put more effort in on that play he could have got to the puck. But you are entitled to thinking it was physically impossible or whatever for him to have got the pass.

He might have. If the puck didnt bounce on him.
I’m not debating whether it was a penalty. But the initial poke check wasn’t a penalty, and he had lost possession at that point.
Well isnt that kinda the point?

If they cant get the puck away from you with out taking a penalty, surely you didnt make a play "you just can’t have?"

Its not rocket science bro. Hronek missed the pass.

My point was that the penalty was irrelevant to the loss of possession which occurred first. I wouldn’t be complaining if the penalty caused the loss of possession but it didn’t. The legal poke check did.

Again, going to agree to disagree. I’m not saying it was a super egregious play or anything, I just thought he could have got to it if he had more urgency.

And honestly, I bet Oettersson

Sorry but... What are you not understanding?

Yes. The poke check caused loss of possession. But the way the diving poke check was performed should have resulted in a penalty because EP was using his body to shield the puck.

And a pass that was behind him he could have got to if he had skated slower...

I have a hard time believing they’ll be able to surpass that Blues team for the 2nd WC spot. They put up stats on the Blues broadcast before the game and the Blues have been lights out since around Feb 1. First in shots per game, goals per game, scoring chances etc.
The Canucks stats by contrast are abysmal. Last in shots per game, last in gpg etc.

They still need more speed and skill.

The writing has been on the wall here for a while with the Blues buttery soft schedule. The Canucks have simply dropped too many points during the season (both via OT losses and backup goalies dropping way too many points when Lankinen needs a rest).

They would have to go from this inconsistent team they’ve been all season to a borderline top performer down the stretch, which obviously was not going to happen with the current roster.

If Demko was not perpetually shelved and Hughes not well below 100% they’d have more of a shot, but they’ve had a very outside shot at playoffs for a while.

Agreed. The Petey OT "mistake" was not really his. The other guys on ice were more at fault than him.

Quinn had played too much and was simply gassed. It affected his decision making and he made a bad decision. He passed a (bobbling) puck to a stationary Petey who was essentially 1 on 3 with no support. And then the puck bounced on him. Its 3v3 OT. We know how you're supposed to run it. Re-group, change, and then attack with speed.

Instead, Debrusk goes for a change on the ensuing 2 on 1 against, and Quinn defends the 2 on 1 about as poorly as you can dream up.

Mistakes happen to everyone, not really blaming Quinn because, well, he's Quinn. But it's not surprising the same crowd is trying to dump this on Petey when really Petey is the least culpable for the OT goal.

I thought Hughes, by his standards, had a really poor game. Still, as much as he gave up he created.

Myers absolutely f***ed up on the 3-1 goal. There's no reason to be a help option on a 2-on-2 and doubly so when you have Quinn Hughes angling a guy. That's not the threat! Then he had the pass on his stick but wasn't firm so it just gently careened over to Holloway. Extremely frustrating for a veteran player to make such a terrible read.

The OT goal is a sequence of poor reads by Hughes and DeBrusk. Hughes seends a poor, and unnecessary, pass to Pettersson in triple coverage while he's standing still and DeBrusk switches off without possession. Getting chances OT isn't rocket science and two of the Canucks most important players made very dumb decisions at critical moments.

However, I'm not one to be all doom and gloom. I'm excited anytime Sherwood does anything. That guy plays hockey like his life is over without it. He also leads all Canucks forwards in 5v5 points. More importantly, their 3rd goal was a work of art. Hughes turning nothing into something with a very smart quick up. Pettersson excecuting a perfect entry and cross zone pass in one motion. Then Boeser channeling all the power of the hockey gods to blast a slapper with seconds to go. It's why we love sports. There's real drama and stakes that can't be scripted.

Is it even a penalty? Typically they don’t call a tripping player when the player gets the puck first which was the case here. This one is a bit weird though because it wasn’t the stick which tripped Petey. Anyway, I don’t really care much either way about this.

And a pass that was behind him he could have got to if he had skated slower...
You are looking at the wrong play I think. I am referring to the pass from Hughes, I think, where he tried to lunge for it but couldn’t make it. I think it was around the thirty second mark of the clip you shared.

What now..?
Sorry, that was cut off. I was going to say that I think Pettersson holds himself more accountable than you hold him, honestly.

The third goal was a thing of beauty. Three players making elite plays at a clutch moment. Glimpses of what could be.

This is no joke, I told my wife that the Canucks lost the game and stood up as soon as the puck was cleared. It was pretty much identical to the tying goal against Nashville in that way.

Exactly like you said. All three made perfect reads and executions. Not a single wasted movement. Very similar to the last second rush goal Hoglander scored against the Jets. With speed and purpose they can be deadly.

I'm probably one of his biggest haters, but I do agree, he has been reasonably good this year...however, I have zero understanding how he gets so much rope from the coaching staff...his blunders are so mind bogglingly epic in nature, despite having less of them this season. I just don't get how anyone, especially the coaches and management, can watch some of his defensive lapses and come away thinking "I need to have him out there to protect this one goal lead, or to kill this important penalty"...I'd be doing everything I could to minimize his negative impact on the team, even if it meant giving more of Myers' minutes to Mancini. He is just too erratic to be placing so much faith in IMO.
If you watch the last long interview (I think), where he's asked about the improvements to his game, one would almost think he was being ironic, as he speaks about his play as being reliable for its consistency, or something along those lines.

While he most certainly has become a much better player the past two seasons, and now he's paid what he's worth, if not slightly better value, the guy's ability to completely destroy a system with his erratic decisions is something else to behold. He's earned his moniker and then some.

More of an interesting tidbit than a real point of contention, but the icing that led to the Blues' second goal should have definitely been waived off. Good veteran play by Faulk to skate at 70% speed initially, wait for the linesman to turn and then skate at about 50% towards the puck while he wasn't looking.

We were robbed. I still think back to "The Shift" in OT vs the Kings. All three of them were U22 and dominating. It seemed like we were going to be perennial contenders for a decade to come.

Nope.

It seems like such a Canuck thing that a young core of EP, QH, Brock, Bo, and Demko can find so little success (be it health, locker room issues, or just poor GMing)

This isn't true anymore and has been changed.

A trip is now a trip even if you get puck first.
