I think management thinks that any trade for the second tier core guys are going to be lateral moves.
It’s semi-baffling because both Kopitar and Doughty have had great years. But it’s a steep drop off after those two. Quick has been mostly average this year, as well.
I just don’t know how many times they can reshuffle the deck around the same 3-4 cards.
Part of the problem is they’re missing impact wingers. Toffoli was supposed to be that guy and he’s looking like a fringe top sixer with some niche PP value as a sniper. Pearson is a depth winger. Brown has had a nice bounce back year, but is clearly not that guy, either. Then you look at the Pens/Bolts with Kessel/Kucherov/etc. We don’t have anyone like that. We DID have impact wingers in 2012 and 2014 with Carter and Gaborik.
If they keep the core, they probably need a bonafide top six center in his prime so Carter can move back to the wing.
That still doesn’t address the hole in the top four D and checking 3C.
And that’s where things start to spiral. I don’t see any way to fill these holes without parting with a core player. If they try to fill them from within, Kopitar and company will be far out of their prime, the windows don’t match up, and we become the Flyers.
