After that snarky interview Petey gave to IMAC, I'll bet that someone took him aside and had a heart to heart. He's a young man who has to learn from adversity, and he's had a lot of it this year, in the glare of the spotlight.

I hope the biggest thing he's learning is that he doesn't need to be "brilliant" every game. If you have an unsatisfactory game, you learn from it. Aside from whatever physical challenges he's had this year, he needs to get over his perfectionism, relax, and go on his instincts.

He should have said f off imac your a stupid f..kin fool

Nice end to an otherwise uninspiring day.

Strange season in many ways. Strangest of all might be how a career second stringer shows up to save the day and vie with Hughes for the teams MVP.

Good

Lankanin - both goalies super in this game. Sometimes both got a little lucky but this game was a Goalie fest.

Myers - really the anchor on the defense with Hughes out. Would have been heartless to trade him but he could help some of the contending teams the way he is playing. Him and M. Pettersson are an effective duo.

Hronek - maybe his best stretch of the season. Is helping out the younger players and covering for others mistakes.

Hoglander - nice that Tocchet played him in the late going. His game is down low in the offensive zone and he did that well in this game. Much better play in the neutral zone.

Blueger - him and Suter both effective on PK and puck management. Good glue players.

Sherwood - sort of typifies the Canuck team. Try to keep the puck in the other end. Block shots and fight to keep the other team to outside in your end. Bump and grind and hope for bounces. Put away the winner nicely in this game. Nothing elegant about Sherwood and nothing elegant about the Canucks.

Pettersson - you hope this is the direction he will continue in. Shot reminded you of what he was, at one time, expected to be.

Others

Probert - steady play again. Probably could have been classified as good. Likely want to re-sign this player in the off season or sooner if possible. However, shouldn't get carried away given this player's history. Could go all Soucy on you pretty quickly

Mancini - see a lot of AHL in him. Needs to improve his zone of coverage. Got pushed back too much and needs to get on the body quicker so he can keep people further from the crease. Minnesota had best chances with him out. Something of a project but is, generally, keeping his head above water.

O'Connor - was useful in this game as he has been since he joined the team. Certainly has good speed.

Main question now is how much of a load can they put on Lankanin. Maybe better to let Silovs try to pull out a win over a tired Montreal team next game.

Tonight’s Game
  • Parts of the game he really liked and parts where they needed to settle down; got too antsy
  • Got mad at a couple of lines during a TV timeout
  • Gave Petey crap and after the game Pettersson told Tocchet that sometimes he needs that
  • Need a push from a couple of lines
  • Opponents will always push back
  • Liked their start but need to hit their net and have better shot selection; aiming to precise and missing the net
Pettersson
  • There’s pockets of his game that you really like and now it’s about sustaining it
  • Has to do this all the time; shooting and moving his feet; needs to be habitual
  • There were a couple of times him or Hronek could have smashed a puck on net during a PP
Hronek
  • Likes his leadership
  • Has taken Junior Pettersson under his wing; spending time together and talking on the bench
Hoglander
  • Was on for the winning goal and was part of making it 3-1; his line deserved to be out there in the final minute
  • Wanted to give him confidence
Roster
  • TDL is tough on players and coaching staff
  • Wasn’t a lot to talk about with Allvin and was just able to focus on tonight’s game
Boeser
  • Has been struggling to score but is getting chances
  • Keep shooting and they’ll eventually go in
  • All he can do is control his game
Lankinen
  • Was big during a 5 minutes stretch where the Wild were all over the Canucks
Clearing the Puck From An Open Net
  • Happened 3 or 4 times; instead of taking things for granted they battled and swiped the puck away
  • Figures each defenceman had at least one swipe
Defensive Structure
  • Have been playing pretty good defence the last 6 weeks
Youth
  • Having a young team means the coaches have to set a standard; older players have to do the same

Man, Pettersson looks and sounds like a totally different person in that interview. Did they pump him full of anti-depressants?
Hes just a fairly young, neurotic person thats still getting over himself and maturing. Ive been saying this for a while, but it just comes as a package deal with him being as cerebral as he is. He's going to overthink things sometimes and lose confidence in others. Everything surrounding his contract was a huge weight on him that's slowly coming off. I'm not sure if he'll ever be 100% consistent and non-mercurial, since he relies so much on motivation that isnt always there to engage with the sport, but both he and the team should be investing in a way to make him as mentally consistent as possible.
