I don't think the Kings will be that bad. The Coyotes are the odds on favorites.

After their great inaugural season watch Vegas miss the playoffs then get lucky in the draft lottery to land Hughes.

The Kings don't need to be the worst. They just need to win the lottery.

I mean. They are at least not stuck in the black hole if they keep playing like this.

Stevens has already shortened the bench, Kopitar/Doughty going to be dead by December.
$11 million per year for a d-man who can't QB the PP, fumbles the puck on offensive attacks and helping the opponent score a goal sticking his skate blade out(he knows a lot better not to do that but yet he did it). So far Doughty's overall play is not deserving to what he's getting paid!

If Blake wants even a sniff of the playoffs he needs to fire the coaching staff and get rid of some player stat.

It's a hard cap league.

I think Blake and co. know what this team is. He's not going to trade from multiple positions of weakness. He has yet to do so. They are riding out all the Cup contracts. I don't think it's playoffs or bust. They are rebuilding without tanking, because you can't tank with these contracts. You can potentially suck with these contracts, but you can't tank. I think management is ok with that, because they really don't have another option.

Kopitar and Doughty, if they wanted to stay, were going to be given thank you contracts. Whether that's good or bad management is irrelevant. I very much doubt there is any franchise that wouldn't sign those guys for 2 Cups.

Missing the playoffs now isn't new. It's been 4 full seasons since the last pulse. It's going to be conservative for the next few years. Mess around on the fringes of the roster. If the cap creates pressure, they'll trade someone. Doughty was the last big signing. Toffoli and Muzzin aren't going to get thank you contracts. At least they shouldn't anyway.

People can tune out if they want, but in terms of the long term picture, I would say this kind of patience, if this is what they're doing, is the right way to go. Whatever was going to happen with Pacioretty sort of throws my theory a bit off, but ultimately it didn't happen. They gave Kovalchuk a couple bucks to maybe sell a ticket, and it might end up being a good thing that Pacioretty didn't happen for whatever reason.

Sounds crazy, but the Kings should bench Doughty for any games in Toronto.

Yeah, it's been a while since he rose to the occasion. Games against the Leafs, or against other top defensemen, those hyped matchups, he usually comes out on the lower end. The team might win a specific game, but he usually plays poorly in them.

There used to be regular season Doughty, playoff Doughty, and Olympic Doughty. Obviously Olympic Doughty is a rare thing, but we haven't seen anything beyond regular season Doughty for a long time, even in the playoffs. Luke Schenn has more goals and points than Doughty in the playoffs since 2014.
