I hate to be the guy that's always complaining about the coach or blaming things on him, but there's clearly problems. Zone entry, set plays, power play, breakouts and player utilization philosophy are all issues.

Stevens played Kopitar almost 24 minutes tonight, and Doughty nearly 30 minutes. This was a regular season game against a week opponent. Stevens is going to run these guys into the ground.

And Doughty doesn't even deserve to play 30 minutes a night right now. He needs to clean his game up. He needs a strong minded coach that will put him in his place. That's not Stevens.

How did the 95-96 Kings win a game vs. the 95-96 Avs?
I remember that season very well. The Kings started off the season 4-0-3 and were the last undefeated team in the NHL.

It was all down hill from there and Gretzky was traded to the Blues in February.

They went on the annual Kings bottom out period in January with an eight-game winless streak, and only two wins in a stretch of 24 games from January through March.

Back to Yachmenev, he finished 5th that year in Calder Trophy voting and tied with Eric Daze for the second most amount of points by a rookie that season with 53 points in 80 games. He trailed the Calder Trophy winner, Daniel Alfredsson, by eight points.

Sadly, that rookie year would be the best numbers Yachmenev would ever achieve in a single season.

Also worth mentioning that Yanic Perreault emerged as a scoring threat that season, scoring 25 goals, second behind the team leader, Dmitri Khristich.

Stevens, on Jaret Anderson-Dolan appearing unfazed as a 19-year-old playing in the NHL:
He’s an interesting kid, to be honest with you. You start to find out more about him as he’s here longer, but he’s a kid that’s been very serious about being a hockey player for quite some time. Even though he’s young, I think he’s trained and he’s physically mature beyond his years, and I think he’s mentally mature beyond his years. I think he has a really solid family upbringing that’s really supported him through that process, and I think it was great – a lot of them were here tonight to see him play.

...bet they really enjoyed watching him play those 7 minutes, dickhead.

We fired the coach that was hard on his players in favor of the coach that would let them have fun again.

I noticed that too. 24 minutes and 30 min and it's only game 2,what the hell is JS doing? We have 4 centers and one played 7 min. SMH.

Stevens is f***ing terrible, but this is the guy the core wanted. Knowing that about them, would another coach really make that much of a difference?

I’m impressed with Kovy. He can still skate so that ‘issue’ is crossed of. He definitely has that x-factor (sorry for the cliche, but I can’t think of a more appropriate phrase) and his play making along with the scoring threat he brings is going to mean Kopitar has more space to work in. Kopi and Kovy between them are going to be a lot of fun. It works with Iaffalo out there so the question may quickly become ‘where does Brown play?’.

Wagner looks great but needs to work on a move when 1:1, he needs variety in his approach so the goaltender cannot get set so easily. I like his mind set though, he seems completely unfazed.

I’m not worried about guys not getting going yet as it’s only 2 games in. Same for early season ice time for JAD and others. It’s game 1 for him and Stevens was always going to stick to guys he can trust until we get the first win on the board. You never know how a young player is going to react but he will get ice as he earns trust. Preseason does not count in that. Wagner shows that he will play inexperienced players, as he did with Kempe and Iaffalo last year. Let’s give it a few games and let things bed in before we start getting too melodramatic over things like usage.

At this point, what's making the Kings struggle is the coach. The amount of turnover on this roster and the same problem continuing is telling.

A regular season game against a weak opponent that was kicking the Kings ass in terms of process for most of the game. Not that Stevens plays the 4th line in general, but he's not going to play them more in that game. The young guys would be better than whatever the 2nd line has been doing, but the vast majority of coaches not just around the NHL, but around professional sports, will play veterans more often. Go around the league. It is a constant complaint from fans like 90% of the time. Whatever coach Blake brings in to replace Stevens will do the same thing, at least eventually. Although the whole one too few players on the PP will be a season long joke for sure.

Through 2 games, Kopitar is 8th in ES average ice time for forwards, and 7th in total average ice time. Doughty has played 8 more seconds on average than Karlsson. 15 defensemen have averaged 25+ minutes so far. Doughty is tied for 4th in shifts per game.

Those two playing a lot, what's the alternative? They both make a ton of money. Doughty wants to play the whole game anyway. That's who they have. It'll change for a game if the Kings are up 4-0 going into the 3rd(although that won't happen if they have 4 guys on the PP). Until then, expect to see what you see.

It was last year when they made lineup changes because of the dad trip right? They took a young guy out of the lineup? It was after LaDue scored in the Stars game, I think. So sometimes they need to placate family, sometimes not, depends on who the player is. Or when Sutter did it with Weal. Called him up and didn't play him. The family was there. I think it was Weal. That last game against the Sharks in 14-15 or something like that.

It's crazy that Iafallo started last year on the 1st line when he came into camp as just a dude.

Coaches are weird. Always have been, always will be.

You can call Phaneuf a pylon, but you have to admit, he has a pair of brass balls.
