What difference does it make if the Rangers make the playoffs? Maybe he doesn't want his final season to be a complete failure. This is still a proud person we're talking about. It makes perfect sense.

We need a G.M. with vision and patience. Enough with the knee jerk reactions. Fourteen years of inept mismanagement. Gorton should be given the chance without interference from Dolan. This team has gone in the wrong direction and will get worse before better. We are the ONLY team to give away 1st rounders in two of three years. Build through the draft and shrewd free agent signings, not high price signings but college and undrafted players
The real gutsy move is getting Hank to waive his NMC and dealing him to a contender for a slew of picks and prospects. I do not believe this team can compete during Hank's prime

I suppose it's time to start bombarding Jeff Gorton's email and phone line with requests for a casual meeting between he and I. Ya know, just to get in his head about plugging me into the front office when Sather leaves
After all, I did call the Klein for Del Zotto trade. Should probably put that on my resume.
Either way, for Glen, retirement is long overdue. On the other hand, consider me someone who might want to go outside the current Rangers FO for the new GM. I don't know how much I want Gorton running things despite HFNYR's commitment to blaming everything bad on Sather, and everything good on "wow, Gorton must have had a lot of input on that one!"

Unfortunately every single big name we grab (literally every single one) except Jagr decides to fall off a cliff 1 year after coming here.
Drury, Redden, Nash, Richards, Gaborik (really bad second year although he came back in his third).
Now an art ross winning guy who was scoring at a 70-80 pt pace in THIS season can't score with us. This was consistent with Renney, Torts, now AV. It's unreal. Somehow our Pro scouts are able to predict with pinpoint accuracy every time a FA is about to fall off a cliff.
Team loaded with grinders and jammers? Can't score. Team loaded with skill guys? Can't score. The Jagr line and 2 Gaborik seasons stand alone as the only bright spot in the black hole that is NYR offense.
At least we traded Gomez and Gabs away at the absolute most perfect times imaginable.

Change is good.
Sather is already a complete failure. A few points from making or not making the playoffs shouldn't be the deciding factor. If the Rangers miss and Sather stays,will it be the same criteria for next season? What happens if they miss again and give TB a top pick in the draft for a 40 year old player? Sather will hold on until the team makes the playoffs? 6-7 years ago there was a report about Sather retiring if the Rangers won the Cup. Now its making the playoffs. Sather should close the blinds in his home and not leave his home in shame for the next 6 months if the Rangers can't make the playoffs in a lousy conference.

The best young player we have on the team was acquired in a trade with the Habs.

I'm not talking from our perspective. We might look at this one way and think that it's kind of a silly deciding factor, but that's because we don't want him here anyway. But, when you get to decide for yourself in a job that you like, then you might not want to leave after ending up with the worst possible outcome. Eventually he might give up trying to go out on a somewhat positive note (again, from his perspective, not ours), but this is the first we're hearing anything real about him retiring soon. If the Rangers manage to miss the playoffs this year and next, it might be a different story.
Just remember, if only he would have the Rangers budget, he would win the Cup every year.
