Friedman: Gibson is interested in Carolina, or Edmonton

Gibson would be a great add for Edmonton because he's playing great this season. This is exactly why 99% of Oilers fans would be in favor of this trade. Gibson on the Oilers would, dare I say, make them IMHO the favorite to win the Stanley Cup.
However, you can't say you want him now because he's playing so great and will improve our odds of winning the cup considerably but we only are willing to give you stuff we don't want or won't miss... because... well he had a couple of relatively poor seasons prior to this great year.
That just doesn't make sense. It reeks of sleezy used car salesism.

It's a good thing nobody here is actually making trades.

Yup, at 3.2m, next year his AAV would rank 29th in the league before any UFA signings, below illustrious names like Woll and Fedotov. Good chance it's not even top 32, so we're talking backup money. God knows how low that will rank the year after that.

In a league where the top goalies are making 8 figures, and good ones will be getting at least 8m, an AAV of 3.2m for a guy putting up really good numbers on a bad team this year ... well if that's too pricey then you really are bargain hunting.

A lot of the Oiler fanbase still thinks the team will be fine with what they have in net "because Game 7." You just can't get through to a lot of them.

I'll bow to the superior knowledge of Anaheim fans as to what that team needs.

But endlessly bashing every Oiler player has got to get tiresome.

Asking for a 1st from Edmonton for Gibson, in that context of that kind of trade, makes zero sense for the Oilers. That is a gross overpayment.

The Ducks are not in a position to ask for an overpayment for Gibson. His contract cost, length of said contract, and modified no trade clause (10 teams) all handcuffs the Ducks when it comes to his trade value.

I was with you on a lot of what you were posting until the bolded. The Ducks have absolutely no reason to trade Gibson. He’s helping Dostal slowly become a number one with split duties. He’s a good mentor for him. He helps hit the cap floor. He’s playing very good hockey. Despite his stats the past few years, most Ducks fans think he’s played well above those stats. He’s well liked. They don’t need cap space. They have every reason to ask for what they want for him or they don’t need to trade him. There’s no benefit trading him unless they receive good value back.

Gibson asked the Ducks to trade him back in June 2023. Did they? No. Its now February 2025.
No reason to trade him until the Ducks get a deal that works for them.... not just Edmonton... no matter how much you and your fellow Oilers fans want to make it so.

I’d rather we give up Beau Akey and a 2nd or something instead of Savoie, who might even be ready to make the team right now.

The Fowler deal can't really be separated from the Trouba one ... it was about swapping a vet LHD for a RHD, to clear the decks for Lacombe, Mintyukov, and Zellweger, and upgrading a 4th to a 2nd in the process. Which is supported by the reports that the Ducks tried to deal Fowler for Trouba directly. So they didn't really lose anything, just reshuffled their lineup to balance things L-R and stylistically.

If it had just been Fowler being traded and no Trouba involved, I don't think it would have been just for a pick. If all Gibson can return is a 2nd, aren't they better off getting use out of him for 2 years and then selling him as a rental for a pick later? Even if all they can get is a 3rd or 4th later ... two more years of a good 1a/1b is easily worth that downgrade in picks.

Akey would be totally buried in a deep Anaheim blueline prospect pool. There's a long list of young Ducks D that I'd take over him.
