Friedman: Gibson is interested in Carolina, or Edmonton

Potentially a RHD (subject to how Emberson continues to progress, but an upgrade is likely warranted anyways).

Ideally Arvidsson played like an actual top 6 winger, but in the absence of that, Draisaitl could really use a real winger to play with.

Besides that, any depth to overload this team and make them as competitive for a cup run this year while we have some value superstar contracts.
I like the idea of gibson to Edmonton…. And I think he fits there better than Carolina.

I think he gives oilers a legit chance to win a cup, and as much as I’ve enjoyed being an oiler hater…. I feel like I want to see mcdacid lift the cup…. Think he’s a top 5(might argue top 3) player all time when it’s said and done… would be a shame if he can’t get some cups

Is Terry better than his statline suggests? Do either of McTavish or Carlsson look like future 1Cs? Winning teams need at least one 1C and another forward who can drive his own line. Doesn't seem like Anaheim has either right now.

- Terry is a good, sometimes great, second-liner.
- Carlsson has a lot of "almost" moments. 1C potential.
- McTavish looks better on the wing; could be the system — who knows?
- Z drives offense, but no one's scoring. Better at center but stapled to the wing.

IMO/YMMV.

What an expansive and not at all selective history of goalie trades :sarcasm:
Sure, why not add to it than? What other higher end goalies have been traded and for what return in recent years? That list was taken from a discussion of goalie value and recent trade history of goalies.

My preference for the Oilers is for an impending UFA for that reason

The list of pending UFA goalies is not one that inspires any confidence for a Cup run. I certainly wouldn't bank on any of them.

The Oilers came achingly close last year. I honestly believe that if they'd had Gibson, there's a really good chance that they are the defending champs right now. With even 25% retention, and the cap going up, he's about to have a below average starter's AAV, without any long term attached to it. Someone is going to find themselves with a bargain in net. Honestly, I'm fine with it being the Ducks for another year or two ... if all anyone's offering is a rental price of a mid round pick anyway, might as well get value from him on ice, and get the mid round pick later. Hell if in two years the Ducks are in the hunt, they might not WANT to trade him.

And then he can continue missing the playoffs for 3 more years while his value continues to decline.
If you’re content to keep a player through his entire contract, what’s the relevancy of his trade value declining to other teams?

Gibson is more value to Anaheim now than any of the low ball offers would be.

Keep him for what exactly? Dostal looks ready to take over, and needs a new contract after this season.

Dostal is still pretty young and is not the biggest or strongest goalie in the league by any stretch. I think at this stage of his career he would begin to wear down noticeably if he played more than 45-50 games. This is especially true playing behind a defense which still gives up a lot of high percentage scoring chances. So having a 1A/1B situation is ideal right now for Anaheim. If Gibson is traded the Ducks will either need to get a solid veteran backup goalie in return who can play 35-40 games or they'll need to sign one. By the time Gibson's contract is over in a couple of years I have no doubt that Dostal could handle a 50-55 game workload...especially if the team is improved defensively.

The Dostal/Gibson transition is perfect timing if they bridge Dostal the final couple years of Gibson. People need to remember Dostal is only making 800kish, he isn’t going to command an outrageous amount
