Rumor: Gibson is interested in Carolina or Edmonton

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Potentially a RHD (subject to how Emberson continues to progress, but an upgrade is likely warranted anyways).

Ideally Arvidsson played like an actual top 6 winger, but in the absence of that, Draisaitl could really use a real winger to play with.

Besides that, any depth to overload this team and make them as competitive for a cup run this year while we have some value superstar contracts.
I like the idea of gibson to Edmonton…. And I think he fits there better than Carolina.

I think he gives oilers a legit chance to win a cup, and as much as I’ve enjoyed being an oiler hater…. I feel like I want to see mcdacid lift the cup…. Think he’s a top 5(might argue top 3) player all time when it’s said and done… would be a shame if he can’t get some cups

Not true. Looks to be a forward and/or a LHD. Team will def be bringing in a forward
Probably, but if Bouchard goes down, who on earth is satisfied with Emberson, Klingberg, Stetcher as RHD?

Seems like a sure fire way to take yourself out of contention.

Is Terry better than his statline suggests? Do either of McTavish or Carlsson look like future 1Cs? Winning teams need at least one 1C and another forward who can drive his own line. Doesn't seem like Anaheim has either right now.

- Terry is a good, sometimes great, second-liner.
- Carlsson has a lot of "almost" moments. 1C potential.
- McTavish looks better on the wing; could be the system — who knows?
- Z drives offense, but no one's scoring. Better at center but stapled to the wing.

IMO/YMMV.

What an expansive and not at all selective history of goalie trades :sarcasm:
Sure, why not add to it than? What other higher end goalies have been traded and for what return in recent years? That list was taken from a discussion of goalie value and recent trade history of goalies.

My preference for the Oilers is for an impending UFA for that reason

The list of pending UFA goalies is not one that inspires any confidence for a Cup run. I certainly wouldn't bank on any of them.

The Oilers came achingly close last year. I honestly believe that if they'd had Gibson, there's a really good chance that they are the defending champs right now. With even 25% retention, and the cap going up, he's about to have a below average starter's AAV, without any long term attached to it. Someone is going to find themselves with a bargain in net. Honestly, I'm fine with it being the Ducks for another year or two ... if all anyone's offering is a rental price of a mid round pick anyway, might as well get value from him on ice, and get the mid round pick later. Hell if in two years the Ducks are in the hunt, they might not WANT to trade him.

If you’re content to keep a player through his entire contract, what’s the relevancy of his trade value declining to other teams?

Gibson is more value to Anaheim now than any of the low ball offers would be.
Keep him for what exactly? Dostal looks ready to take over, and needs a new contract after this season.

Dostal is still pretty young and is not the biggest or strongest goalie in the league by any stretch. I think at this stage of his career he would begin to wear down noticeably if he played more than 45-50 games. This is especially true playing behind a defense which still gives up a lot of high percentage scoring chances. So having a 1A/1B situation is ideal right now for Anaheim. If Gibson is traded the Ducks will either need to get a solid veteran backup goalie in return who can play 35-40 games or they'll need to sign one. By the time Gibson's contract is over in a couple of years I have no doubt that Dostal could handle a 50-55 game workload...especially if the team is improved defensively.

The Dostal/Gibson transition is perfect timing if they bridge Dostal the final couple years of Gibson. People need to remember Dostal is only making 800kish, he isn’t going to command an outrageous amount

And if they retain on Gibson, that veteran backup will probably be earning roughly what they're retaining. In that case, why downgrade and pay the same amount (especially if the other pieces are underwhelming/not particularly useful).

A 1A/1B situation where they're splitting the workload is not a bad thing. Enough work to keep both sharp & not so much that they're getting burned out. More & more the best option seems to be keeping Gibson & running that very solid duo next year. Thankfully PV seems to see that too with his 'very high price' statements.

Remains to be seen if Gibson is okay playing second fiddle to a young goalie on a losing team in the last few years of his contract.

And then he can continue missing the playoffs for 3 more years while his value continues to decline.

If his value is already a mid round pick, what's it matter? He'll probably net that much as a rental in 2 years, so they might as well keep him til then. They miss out on nothing by waiting.

OTOH, a contending team that's goalie needy can go a bargain route, and miss out on potential Cups as a result until then. So who loses out more?

Because he is better then anyone else we would get. There has to be some other benefit to the Ducks then just trading him to trade him.

The Ducks dont benefit from the cap at all. The mid round pick people are offering isnt going to make a difference.

The mid round pick doesn’t fit recent goalie trade history anyways. IF he does get traded the results will be interesting

They downgrade in net as a service to Gibson who maybe doesnt' want to rot away his entire career on a poor team. Thats the real and only reason to trade gibson, is because he wants out. Not to vastly improve your roster or prospect pool. If it was the Oilers it would likely be Stu plus going back

Wasn't Friedman the one also claiming that Gibson swore he'd never play another game for Anaheim? How'd that turn out?

Edit: Much like dogs & fire hydrants, 'journalists' & clickbait seem to go together...
Pretty sure that was seravelli who said that about Gibson not playing another game for the ducks and he took serious heat after wards for it to

I wonder if there is some good faith between the ducks and oilers after the Henrique trade last year.

Anaheim moving on from Gibson would be doing the player a favor.
After the Henrique deal? Lol hell threw oilers gift wrapped the ducks there xup with pronger. The ducks should repay the favor. Yes i think gibson gets the Oilers a cup....
