OT: Getting into UBC

I graduated from highschool in 2012 and for Arts I think you needed an 80% average. Btw you can't choose which courses you want to show them like SFU, they automatically receive your transcript from your highschool.

It really doesn't matter what courses you're taking if you're going into arts, but I recommend taking atleast 1 grade 12 science course and Law, Psychology, Geography, History etc.

You also need some volunteering stuff on your application.

Wrong. UBC (and I believe most BC schools) changed their policies recently on admission and now almost exclusively look at your junior year, citing that other universities around the world do the same.

3.8 is good enough for UBC. You should be fine.

I have only heard of their increase of prioritizing of extracurricular activities and supplemental (http://ubyssey.ca/features/feature-broad-based-admissions/). SofHertl, I would recommend reading that article, as the girl in the article has a 83% avg but was accepted due to extracurricular activities.

I have not heard anywhere about them prioritizing junior years.

Do you have a source? I am just curious where you heard it from, and how recent this was.

Yeah you're right actually. UBC changed it for that one year because of teacher strikes and that some schools didn't release their grades (as per their strikes) and schools just went with their grade 11 grades. They switched back to looking at grade 12 stuff.

For the 2013 Fall; all ~6,000 undergraudate first year students averaged a 91% average across all faculties.

That is one of the highest in Canada.

Of course, Arts, would be looking at slightly above an 86% average, and this came directly from imagine day 2013 last week.

I got accepted with a 92% average but chose to go elsewhere. I always found this type of thought process silly though. You need good grades to get into a school like that -- whether it's high 80's or low 90's shouldn't have any bearing on how you prepare for admissions.

I wish I had a 92% average...

Writing program at UVic is 89% (highest in the school) and I didn't make the cut, but I'm going to work super hard this year to get into it for next year.

Important to note that 91% average means average, not minimum. A lot of people at my high school were worried / didn't even apply just because they had an 84 average... but some got in with 82-87.

NOTE: You don't have to be smart or work hard to get into UBC, but you definitely need to work hard to stay.

However, that said... your broad based admission is something that is being really popular, and that will have a big affect on being accepted as well.

unfortunately, UBC does not released the competitive average (to get in) for each individual faculty unlike SFU.

Just keep working hard and stay focused this year. Very easy to deviate from your studies in first year. If you can maintain a solid GPA, it should be fairly simple to switch into a different faculty now that you've been accepted into the school.

Thanks for all the responses guys. There's a reason I voted the Canucks last on my list of least hated pacific division teams ;)

What are the dorms like there? Are there nice gyms on campus? Thanks in advance for answers once again, wish this forum had reps so I could rep.

The Student Rec Building has a pretty complete gym, also 2 full sized gymnasiums above, and a climbing wall. UBC is definitely one of the better equipped universities in Canada. The new SUB (Student Union Building) building will probably be complete when you go there, bringing even more amenities.

I just started my Graduate studies at UBC, its definitely a very different atmosphere to SFU.

Gyms are awesome. The SRC (Student Rec Centre) Has 3 full sized courts used for daily intramurals, which include volleyball, futsal, dodgeball, basketball, floor hockey and more.

Also in the SRC includes the gym "Bird Coop". It's a nice standard sized gym with everything you need. 2 Squat racks, multiple benches, a variety of weights, lots of bikes and ellipticals, etc. Like the above post, we also have a climbing wall in it for kicks!

Our other gym, War Memorial is used for varsity games, and also used for Rec League sports. It's a fantastic gym, and a great place to watch the UBC womens volleyball dynasty :D.

Osbourne gym on the other hand sucks.

Probably two of political science, kinesiology, theater, and psychology.

Looks like the Arts program. You need low 80s, but have a good personal profile to go with it.

Probably 84-85ish %

Don't quote me on it, I was accepted (but ended up going to SFU) with an 88% average

I know people who got in with 82-83% averages. That's all you need really, but have a decent personal profile. I got 87% and and was waitlisted, lol. I got in, but after most people. They care about clubs and activities more than grades.

I graduated from highschool in 2012 and for Arts I think you needed an 80% average. Btw you can't choose which courses you want to show them like SFU, they automatically receive your transcript from your highschool.

Not true. Arts takes your English mark and your top 3 other academics if it's on the approved list. They will receive the transcript, they only look at English and top 3 approved academics courses, though.

Definitely do volunteering and join school clubs. My friends with low 80s got in before I did because of their involvement with my school.

For some, a bachelor's degree isn't the end.

Not to mention the connections you can make on campus. The opportunities are seriously all over the place. So far, I've had three unique working experiences during classes thanks to developing good rapport with professors and industry people.

But what else can that lead to? What is the max potential for an Arts Degree? or Even Psychology/Sociology etc.. maybe like 100 grand/year if you're lucky..

More and more university/college grads are unable to find jobs because they don't have a plan and take a useless degree

I interned with a state government official the past 2 years, have over 100 hours of volunteer work with other politicians, I have I have weight lifting as a hobby/extra curricular thing and I am a school government official, but I don't have any clubs or sports to put on my résumé. Does that look good enough?

You really think theater is a useless degree? That's silly.

Money isn't everything. I want to go to a good school like this one for more reasons than just making money as an adult.

That with a 3.8GPA will get you in fine.

I think that's a solid resume. If you want to be extra safe, join a well-known club like key club or MUN. If you've had any jobs, that's a plus too.
