Is Germany the next big country?

I think Germany if they invest would be a dangerous force that may take over. If you ever seen German football you know that they are into kill it every time, look how Brazil crowd was crying when they destroyed them and that is how they play the game.

It wouldn't surprise me if hockey became more popular after some success and it is easy money in comparison. Taking a starting position in byern is probably 20 times harder than to be a starter in NHL with a player base globally of 260 million players. So if some of that talent feel they wanna make a easy 12 mill a year it could turn out good.

Success is one of the most essential parameters to gain popularity. We are on the right way and since Seider and Sturm said the will return, I guess we will return :D ;)

But there is plenty of work and things to improve to step up obviously. Perhaps the upcoming WHC in 2027 in GER helps us a bit too.

With players like Leon Draisaitl and others. Playing in the World championship final and was also in olympic final almost winning it. Big country (bigger than Canada and the Nordic countries combined) that has money and a pretty good league with good attendance and enthusiasm for hockey.
Nope, every country has a golden generation…

The problem is that in Germany almost no-one cares about ice hockey…

There is football and then there is nothing…
Then there is tennis, boxing, handball, athletics, ski jumping, ski alpine, basketball…

And then there is hockey…

Then there is another issue… Germany is not like canada with frozen ponds everywhere in winter. Compared to canada and scandis winters are mild.

Equipment is very expensive, most families cannot afford let alone sacrifices needed to drive the kids around the country for games…

Hockey is comfortably number two even in some major cities like Cologne, the KEC is definitely also a part of the local identity there. Mainly people care about their local club rather than anything else, but that's largely the case even in soccer.

Nobody, but Norway is not a big hockey nation.
Fair enough. Also Sweden has some really good players coming in the next 5 years. They will return to the glory days soon, my friend.

Ignore the people bashing Sweden.

The centers are coming, and will be led by Pettersson.

One major problem (and yes, I am going that route - sue me) is that Germany currently has an incredibly shifting population with millions upon millions refugees coming to the country. If they even are into sports at all (I can safely say many are religious extremists condemning leisure activities, as I am a teacher and have >90% refugees in most of my classes), they only care about football, because it's dirt cheap, easy to understand, and you have pitches literally everywhere within 2 km wherever you are.
Even if hockey really had had a higher standing in the German population beforehand, would it now be reversed back to the days past when football reigned supreme over any other sport, simply because the media (and politics) yearn to cater to their biggest audiences, which are heavily favoring football over any other sport.

We welcomed some of the players at the airport in Düsseldorf today, and all of two main TV channels were there with exactly one cameraman and one interviewer each. They couldn't even tell us if the interviews were going to be published or not, because they stated their superiors had the last word in which story to publish.

Guess that pretty much sums up the main obstacle Germany is facing in becoming a legitimate top-6 nation in this sport.

A funny post minding that the top scorer in the German league is Turkish.

Not going to happen within the next 15 years. Germany lacks interest in this sport, which is obviously the main problem even if you want to catch up with the likes of Slovakia/Czechia/Switzerland
How is Slovakia ahead of Germany?

I think watching Hockey is pretty popular in Germany and the viewership of the big DEL clubs is pretty good and well established. I know so many people who watch hockey from time to time, but I nobody that plays it.

I live near a city called Aachen which is close to Cologne, the #1 team in the DEL when it comes to attendance. However in Aachen and the smaller cities around it we have 1 ice rink for 1 million + people.
And thats an open ice rink for everybody who shares time with a hockey club and figure skaters. So ice time is extremely limited.
NRW has 18 million people and 39 rinks.

Well Germany have 3 superstars, a good goalie, gritty players and good coaching. And best on best is not as demanding as stanley cup, there is no best to 7 games nor the same physciality. Put Oilers in best on best, and they would be gold-canidate. Germany is even better than Oilers...

thats not what their best on best team look like. this is more like it:

Michaelis - Draisaitl - Kahun
Reichel - Stützle - Peterka
Plachta - Noebels - Ehliz
Rieder - Sturm - Kühnhackl
Bokk, Stachowiak

Hüttl - Seider
M.Muller - Wissmann
J.Muller - Gawanke

Grubauer, Niederberger, Strahlmeier
The players I listed are for the team in the next best on best, which is 2-3 years away.

I really like this German team, and I am glad that they got the silver. I would’ve been very pleased for them if they had claimed gold. But I think some of the posters here are delusional when they extrapolate from one single good result a trend towards being a top team long-term. The country they match more than any other according to some here which they might defeat on a routine basis is the Czech Republic. Reality check: the head-to-head stats are 23 Czech wins, 3 German wins (including 7 - 1 at world championships, which includes a very easy 4 - 1 defeat of Germany in the quarter finals last year). One tournament does not suddenly change the dynamic. And the German youth teams like U18 are weak.

Ice hockey will not experience a huge sudden boom because of this, either. Football is and will remain king in Germany, and there are lots of other sports that are popular and Germany is good at.

The final had 1.9 Mio. viewers, peak around 3mio on Sport1 in GER. It was the best market share of Sport1 for the last 7 years and the 2nd best for broadcasting a hockey game there.
I don't have figures for Magenta Sport, but I guess around additional 300k - 500k could be realistic.
All in all it's a very decent result and make me optimistic.

Just for comparison. Soccer, WC-Final with GER would have had around 30mio viewers.

Nah they're too tapped into watching Bayern win Bundesliga title after Bundesliga title (I know, there's more to it)

Germany is best to stay the same size if history is any indication.
