With players like Leon Draisaitl and others. Playing in the World championship final and was also in olympic final almost winning it. Big country (bigger than Canada and the Nordic countries combined) that has money and a pretty good league with good attendance and enthusiasm for hockey.

10% and even less is still lot. I forgot from the first post that they are also gonna host the World championships.

Not many youth hockey teams.
Not enough coaches and staff for those teams. So they cannot take care of the kids like they want to.
Back in 2018 many teams had an admission stop because of that.
The game is expensive especially for kids and you have to drive to the nearest rink or team.
Nearly 0 coverage on free-tv ( i asked in 2018 why, and they say they don't have time slots for it and the interest is simply not there).

And of course Football is number one by around 1000000km.

It has its niche, but even success like yesterday or the silver in 2018, does not change that.
Big reason is the media that does not report that often about it. And even during the winter break of the Bundesliga, Icehockey does not play a role, because the main focus then is winter sports.

And the same goes for Fieldhockey. We won the World cup this year in India. Almost no coverage in media. Maybe a small note, but nothing more.

Football has and will always have a stranglehold over this country. And make it almost impossible for any other sport to become as big as it. Maybe during a big event or somebody winning a lot for a period of time (like with Steffi Graf and Boris Becker in Tennis or Michael Schumacher in Formula 1 or during Handball WC and EC) but after those periods the attention goes exclusively back to Football for the majority.
Some Sports thrive in the niches like horse riding [because there is a regional interest and we have big events there with great commentators (CHIO in aachen and Carsten Sostmeier as commentator)], but overall in the nation wide media Football is king.

And its a commitment for the kids and parents. They have to drive to the rinks, buy the equipment and make time for this. And most don't have that.
Football can be played everywhere and is cheap. And everybody can play it. Meaning that you don't get seperated from your friends. Its like basketball in the states.

They've reached an important milestone where they can now produce players who are every bit as good as any other country. Young Germans now have role models to look up to, and it looks like there might be a couple more on the way. Maybe if we ever see NHL players in a best on best again, we could see a German team of destiny win it all that would generate a ''miracle on ice'' kind of hype.

Another huge factor will be wage/income/wealth disparity. Most won't ever be able to afford hockey.

Hockey is expensive, whether your state subsidizes it or not.

And German state won't subsidize shit in regards to hockey.

We‘re a sleeping giant - that being said SO much work still needs to be done at the youth levels to reach the level the Czech’s/Slovaks are at.

We’re a LONG way away from being competitive at all levels with the Canada’s, Finland’s and Swedens.

Look at the number of Germans drafted to the NHL. The number is significantly lower than it was between 2000 and 2010. The smaller group of players are more talented though.

How popular is currently Draisaitl in Germany compared to the biggest stars from other sports? If you could provide maybe just a short answer.

This is such a shame he's not on the team when the opportunity was clearly there. They really could win gold medal with him today.

Believe they have a stated goal to be in the top mix during this decade, if they continue to invest, then yes. Clearly they’ve been making progress.

Problem is that football is and will always be undisputed nr.1 where 90% of investments go to.
That's true even for Sweden. In theory, Germany is large enough to host an array of sports, but, like most other places, hockey will remain niche. They almost certainly won't become a powerhouse, but I expect some solid contributions from them now and in the future.
And really, how far off are Germany or even Switzerland from Slovakia nowadays? It seems Czechia took most of the development in the split, though they've also fallen off a bit, at least in terms of NHL numbers. At any rate, Slovakia took a step back this past decade to the point that Germany/Switzerland/Slovakia are sort of muddled in that #7 spot behind the traditional powers.
Maybe not contenders, but respectable.

Slightly off-topic, I've been rooting for Latvia to come close to that level for many years now. They've flirted a bit with the talent, but not consistently.
The more the merrier, so to speak.

Not very. No one watches the NHL, he hasn't played for Germany in recent years, and also wasn't a part of the Olympic silver medalists. The NBA is more popular to start with and German players there usually join the national team for major tournaments.

But hockey also has competition. Mainly handball and basketball. If Germany were to reach a basketball World Cup final, the euphoria would be just as great, or even greater.

But football has a completely different meaning in Germany. The Bundesliga has the highest average attendance of the football leagues worldwide (about 43,000). And even in the sports leagues in general, the Bundesliga is in 2nd place behind the NFL in terms of average attendance.

When your most prominent hockey academy is still located across the border in Austria it would be silly to expect much growth in numbers.
Yupp we have so benefitet from the Red Bull academy.
I am interested to see how much money Red Bull is willing to spend in youth hockey in Munich when the new Arena and facilities are finished next year.
I am actually hoping that we may build a youth league / competition together with Austria and Switzerland with 3-4 regional divisions and than playoffs.
The DNL is not competitive enough.

This years U18 was unfortunatly week. next 2-3 years are definatly more exiting with some very interesting prospects.

Not very. Any player playing for the soccer national team is far more "popular" than Draisaitl and probably even the average Bundesliga first team player is better known.

I don’t think so. I am loving the German team at these championships but I don’t think it will be a regular occurrence. The youth level is weak, and there are tons of other sports to compete with, most of all football of course. I would be surprised if this tournament causes a huge boost to the sport in Germany. But you never know. It would be good if it did, it is good for the sport to have more and more nations compete at the very top level. The Germans are certainly better than when I lived in Germany (I spent 10 years there a very long time ago, 1981 to 1991.)
