Player Discussion Georgii Merkulov

Why a wing? It's possible, but with Bergy's contract up, and his age, and Haula's up after next season, shouldn't we be looking at Georgie as a Center first?

We will see, the organization likes bigger centers than Georgie is. And honestly they want/need their centers to be strong 200 foot players. I suspect he will be developed as a winger, but anything is possible. Looks like he was 3rd on his team in overall faceoffs, and won 55%

I do remember him scoring an OT goal at the old Garden. He pingponged between Boston and Providence and faded, kind of like the great Dmitri Kvartalnov. As for Merkulov, great to sign a first team All-Big Ten player, such is the Bruins' college pipeline.

FIRST TEAM

Matty Beniers, F, Michigan
Ben Meyers, F, Minnesota
Georgii Merkulov, F, Ohio State
Owen Power, D, Michigan
Brock Faber, D, Minnesota
Jakub Dobeš, G, Ohio State
Wow interesting

I think the post-Bergeron years may lead us to a different mentality.

The fact we've been using the 200 foot center template, was because we've had a Selke winning center.

Team may need to resort to using players that specialize vs. ending up with a team of Chris Kelly centers. Not that Chris Kelly is/was bad, but may find we need some offensive only skill at times than the stoic defensive responsibility guy in the middle.

It will be interesting how the team develops.

None. Zero. Zilch. His contract is for next season.
Also, 0.0

Gotta think he’s going to be a winger - they want him to be creative not having extra responsibilities their centers have

It’s known how good Bergeron is and Krejci was underrated as a 200 foot player - but Haula & Coyle are strong defensive centers

Could the Bruins land Ben Meyers ? He knows the Bruins staff

Not sure what other DC he went to besides Boston and Toronto

I think his 200 foot game is better than he is getting credit for

"He led the country with seven game-winning goals, was a plus-18, and won 55% of his faceoffs. A left shot, he is listed at 5-foot-11, 181 pounds. "
How much room is there on this kids frame? Does he look like he will be 181 long term or could he be expected to put put on 10 or more pounds? I know he’s a goal scorer, is he a good player on and off the puck? I know people don’t love comparisons but I would. :)

Feel like the Bruins rarely target Russians
Don’t know much about him but sign me up for more prospects!
this is true. besides samsonov i dont recall one russian ever working out for Boston since I have been watching in the early 1970's. Zhamnov or whoever maybe considered some success but not much. We shy away from signing them its obvious, not sure why but look at other teams and compare them to the Bruins over the years. We simply do not draft and rarely sign Russians.

Agree. Every time I see someone suggest they draft a Russian in the first round or trade for a Russian I think, "Nope, not gonna happen." They definitely seem to shy away. But in this particular case, I think the Russian factor was offset by the Youngstown and Ohio State affiliations. The Bruins seem pretty close with Youngstown and thanks to Lohrei got to know Ohio State pretty well this year.

OT: Every time I read his stat line and look at the last Russian team he played for I think it says Kapitan Stupido. :skeptic:
