Georgiev is ridiculously bad and it’s kinda embarrassing the Sharks play him.

I think GMs and scouts do a lot more than simply “look at the stats” whenever they’re targeting a player. Anyone that watched enough SJ games last year and then into this year knows that Mac was playing far better than his stats indicated.

I totally agree with you, but I think it's possible to both recognize that he had been playing far better than his stats would indicate and also to not trust that he's definitely an upgrade over a guy that has been putting up better numbers on a better team until recently. In a situation like that when there's no clear answer, it takes time to discuss it with the staff and weigh the options. There's also the temptation to see if the guy who has been better until recently can turn it around, especially if he's at least good enough to keep you in a playoff position, which can delay the decision even more.

The Avs didn't need to discuss anything and any temptation to give Georgiev another chance was long dead, allowing them to make the trade weeks or months before anyone else could even decide if they needed to be in the market.

1) what happened to this dude? Once promising, he’s put together decent full seasons, but man.. I’m watching a replay of the game earlier, and that Protas goal- idk how he misplays Eller’s bid so badly, but Protas doesn’t even celebrate. Maybe that’s just Protas, but it’s got a “ya, wasn’t against a real goalie though” feel to it.
This goal is not on Georgiev, more like WTF Sharks' defence is doing? Two guys holding one guy near boards while Eller walks right onto doorstep. After that they can't lift Protas' stick and he pats rebound in.

Spazz-tastic goalie + worst defense in the league = bad time.

After trading Walman and Ceci, our best defenseman is currently Mukhamadullin, who only in the last 4 weeks has looked like a middle 4 guy. Ferraro on occasion plays like a solid middle 4, other times like a bottom 4. Liljegren similar. Everyone else is basically an AHL tweener or should be in the pressbox or retired (Vlasic). So yeah... the defense is not helping, but Georgie is also good for some truly baffling play that also does not help.

Over the last 3 seasons coming into this one, Blackwood was tied with Korpisalo for the 75th best SV% among the 94 goalies who played 20+ games, and he hasn't been better than a .902 SV% since 2019-20. Yes, he was clearly the best option on the market, but back in December, it was still somewhat murky whether he had figured things out enough to be more than decent on a bad team. It was also still somewhat murky whether a lot of teams actually had a serious goaltending problem that needed fixing, or if it was just a slow start. The Avs couldn't even pretend that Georgiev wasn't trash and showed up desperate with cash in hand before anyone else was ready to do much more than window shopping.
As stated, teams don’t just look at stat lines before trading for players. Blackwood was playing really well behind an AHL-quality defense and that was pretty clear to anyone who watched film on him.

The Avs were losing games due to poor goal tending and had to stop the bleeding ASAP for play-off positioning. On the flip side, Blackwood stole a few games for the Sharks and was interfering with the tank.

Obviously, it's not just looking at stats. They also look at things like "is this guy really an upgrade going forward over what we have", which can be difficult to determine when comparing a guy who is playing really well behind an AHL quality defense to a guy who has consistently put up better numbers but has struggled for a month or two to start the season. Because of this, it takes time and effort to analyze things and come up with an answer, which is why we rarely see contenders making big changes in to their starting goalie in December unless the situation is dire like it was in Colorado.
