OT: General Video Game Discussion IX

In college my freshman roommate and I ran a 1.6 server out of our dorm room. He got a call from IT asking why he was getting obscene amounts of traffic from Sweden and I think that was the end of it, but man it was fun while it lasted.

Never played Source or later, but I did play through the handful of 1.6 servers that were still online a few years ago. Got banned from most of the fun ones; I don't think I ever did anything wrong, but they all seem to be run by belligerent drunks now. I guess that part's never really changed, though.
Man, those were the days. It sounds like I would have really liked you and your roommate! I hope it was a blast while it lasted.

I started playing CS back in... man, I don't even remember when. Version 1.1, 1.2 maybe? It was before the voicechat even became a thing. There was spray'n'pray, there was spray paints, and there was spraying Mountain Dew out of your mouth while typing furiously at your enemies, and those were the three modes of communication. Online game communities have always been toxic, but at least back then when someone was attacking my race or sexual preferences, I didn't have to hear their 13 year old voice.

I've started to become an old man shouting at clouds, haven't I?

I'll echo everyone else, Cyberpunk is pretty damn good today. I'm not sure if I should praise CDProjektRed for their amazing redemption arc ( a la No Man's Sky) or vilify them for hyping up a game to the 10th degree and then releasing a shit version only to fix it years later.

Yeah, you've become that old man.

Gaming in the late 90's early 00's was awesome. I was addicted to a Quake 2 mod called Battle of the Sexes (BotS). I was born in 82 and I have memories of playing games on dos, atari, nes, up until the current gen etc (still remember convincing my mom to buy Leasure Suit Larry on floppy disk FROM THE f***ING GROCERY STORE and then getting in trouble later on when she figured out what it was) and BotS will forever be my favorite game.

 This is wrong on at least two levels. Maybe three. Priceless.

Dude, the grocery store used to have good pc games. Not sure how leisure suit Larry got in there lol

I think I got a might and magic game there, Space Quest (f***ing classic) as well as a few Dragonlance/ DnD games

Welp, finally did it, placed my order for a 77" LG OLED C3 Evo TV...

Been waiting for this for a while. It will arrive Saturday. My PS5 games and UHD blu rays are going to look exponentially better! This also will upgrade my bedroom TV to 65" UHD since my current living room TV will move up there replacing my old CFL back-lit 37" LCD TV I got way back in 2006!

Thus it makes it feel like 2 new TVs instead of one. Suddenly my 47" HDTV I'm using in my loft for my PC seems old and small...

Will also move my PS4 into the bedroom as well along with it for more casual gaming and for its streaming apps that fill the gaps the TV applist is missing that I use.
It's GLORIOUS!

That's all. :D

You should stream yourself watching it from your computer so I can vicariously enjoy it. It's the least you can do after not showing us the unboxing.

Late to the party but that is when I first started. One of the guys on my floor used an aimbot over J-term and got all of us banned because we had used the same CD to download it...

Ended up getting me into Day of Defeat as well. Both CS and DoD became Source, but I never liked them as much. I tried CS a few months ago after I built my PC and got my butt whooped. Still remember the maps inside out though.

Good times.

Ah, the dangers of shared CD keys! That's a problem from long ago.

Oh man, I loved Day of Defeat. It was probably the FPS I was best at, and only because my vision is really good. With only needing to land a shot or two to kill someone, I did a lot better there than in the recoil intensive CS, since it was typically "he who shoots first survives". I'd just set up with a machine gun like the camping scum I am, watch for movement, and shoot through the wall once I saw some. I never did play DoD source, though.

I actually really enjoyed it as well. I tried pretty much everything. But MG over a bridge or a key chokepoint was very fun...both to be the MGer and then trying to turn the corner for a snipe/nade, etc.

Cyberpunk is quite fun. Love the story so far, graphics are good, performance is great (of course after the crap launch), combat is fun with quite a bit of options, and the music is awesome. I think CDProjektRed captured lightning in a bottle with Witcher 3 and expectations for Cyberpunk could never be met. That said, it's a good game on its own (now). Driving still sucks ass, but thankfully there are plenty of fast travel nodes.

I talked a car out of ending its life tonight

Finished Mountain tops of the giants yesterday, and set the Erd Tree on fire, i also finished Crumbling Farum Azula. I will say i didnt like the Fire Giant fight, Dont like it when bosses are so big they go off screen and you cant see their attacks coming and the situation was made worse because its weak spot was on its leg so you were always trying to stay under it most of the time. Farum Azula wasnt my favorite area either, looked really cool though. A lot of annoying enemies and small arenas which made some fights annoying like one of the dragons that came swooping in off screen around the start of the area, It was a small area to fight which made the dragon consistently go off screen so you couldnt see their attacks, The area where you fought was so small and got pretty annoying at times. Ended up beating the beast clergyman and holy **** the speed of the boss during the 2nd stage of that fight was ridiculous. The boss during the 2nd stage looked really bad*** though, cool armor set and looked to be a wolf of some sort? but holy crap was it fast.

For some reason i thought Malenia was a story boss but after i kept progressing through the story and never came across her i looked it up and found out she is not, shes an optional fight. I wanna fight her so i had to look it up where she is and thats where im currently at is Miquellas Erd Tree. Thinking about finishing the game first because i think im close and then go ahead and try and beat her. I can tell i wanna beat the game because im getting a little impatient and trying to brute force myself during fights so i think itd be better in the long run to finsh it first, get the credits, then fight her. So i think today I will go back to the Capital of Ahses (?) progress through there, beat the game then go back and give Malenia a go.

I beat her!!! I technically had to beat her twice because the first time around i died from scarlet rot during her death animation which stinks but i finally got her!! Took me around 24-26 times? I started with around 42 Rune Arcs and I attempted her maybe a couple times at first without a great rune activate, this is my first time using a great rune in this playthrough so i had a decent amount saved up. This was more of a planned fight though so i didnt go in COMPLETELY blind so i knew she was weak to ice so i used my Borealis Mist to help out and removed all other incants so i knew my Mimic Tear was going to use that specific incant instead of something that does next to no damage. As i previously said i used Mimic tear this fight because i still think its OP instead of Kristoff the Dragon Solider, i really wanted all hands on deck for this fight.

Holy **** i thought the Beast Clergyman was a fast boss? Malenia puts him to shame holy smokes. Another dope *** boss from Fromsoft. Loved the look of her in the 2nd phase and her attack where she sends out like a "shadow" form of herself i dunno how to explain it but it looked really dope! That life steal is a ****.

Well done! That fight is something else, lol

after many years I picked up Fallout 4 with all the DLC for 10 dollars. I'm much more of an elder scrolls person, but i enjoyed fallout 3 back in the day. So far I'm liking it but I can see the storyline issues people didn't like. ad victoriam though.

Well i finally beat it! Absolutely incredible game and easily the 2nd best game ive played and am tempted to 100% it considering i only need like 10 more achievements.

Elden Beast and Flying Dragon Agheel are probably my favorite boss fights. I enjoyed pretty much any dragon fight but Agheel was my favorite considering its entrance and it being one of the first bosses i fought, it along with Elden Beast wowed me.

Elden Beast was such an incredible fight and boss. Visually it was genuinely incredible... Unbelievable. It reminded me of something id wanna watch while tripping on LSD back in the day. Damn near speechless of how beautiful it was. From Software did such an incredible job with that fight and the game all together.

Favorite boss arenas were definitely Elden Beast, 2nd stage of the Rennala and Astel Naturalborn.

Well, you just convinced me not to buy that game. I knew enough to know that if I ever played it, I'd be using Mimic Tear, but I didn't realize it's challenge would still be at the level where I'd be giving up without beating it until now. In the game Hades, after 8 tries against Hades himself, I quit for half a year before finally picking it back up and beating him (13 ended up being the lucky number). I'd probably light an effigy of Malenia with my computer at the center of it if I played Elden Ring.

Congrats on your victory, you've done something most people never will.

Malenia, the boss he's talking about, is completely optional.

The game is difficult, but mostly in a fair way.

As @Wasted Talent Said Malenia is completely optional and isnt required to finish the game. Shes also considered by a lot to be the hardest boss in the game and in Souls like games in all. So i wouldnt use her fight as a barometer of whether id get annoyed or not. Also i wouldnt say most people never will beat her, My steam achievement says 35% of people have beaten her.

35% of the people who have played. Then there's also the people who have considered playing, but haven't due to the challenge of the game. And those are just the people who were interested in even trying.

With that in mind, I guess if it ever goes on sale for like 75-85% off I'll consider it. That's a lot, I know, but I've got lots of backlog to keep me gaming, and not enough time for even the new games in it. Still haven't finished my first playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3, and it's the only game I've played since it came out.

What class did you go with in BG3? @BagHead

I spent like an hour and half creating my character today only to scrap it and wait till tomorrow. Thinking about doing a elf/wood elf with draconic powers. But the Wild magic (?) i think its called seems kinda cool and good for drice rolls. Game seems a bit complicated at first glance.

I always go sorcerer since the magic "scales" (for lack of a better term with CHA) with charisma and as my main character I like having a super smooth talking / persuasive PC which is also CHA based.

Congrats on Elden Ring. Thinking of trying the other Fromsoft games? After a break I'm sure. Combat is just as good, story is stronger (but still couched in NPC conversations and item descriptions) but not open world... although there are generally a few choices on where you want to go.
