No player in the world has to earn the rite to not play in the WHC. Lets be clear on that. If Hockey Canada used WHC participation when it came to Olympic selection? maybe they would show up.

Is it disappointing for fans, especially Canadian fans. It is easy for us commoners to think if we were NHL players making $5m or more a year we would gladly go right? Would you go play for a free and risk your bread and butter? for the love of the game?

We can criticize Russians for all their worth in the NHL, but guys like Ovechkin, Malkin with thier $8m+ contract show up with bells and whistles on.

WHC just means more to European players, its part of their culture and part of their dreams.

Canadian players dream about the Memorial Cup, Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold and maybe the Canada/World Cup.

Team Canada lines:
MacKinnon - Turris - Burrows
Hodgson - Kadri - Brouwer
Chimera - Scheifele - Ward
Huberdeau - Schenn - Reid
Monahan - Reinhart

i'm more surprised at the goalies. all the good goalies said no or is it just because hockey canada's based in toronto?? sorry it's probably already been discussed, i can just think of half a dozen canadian goalies i'd rather have there than scrivens and reimer

Hockey Canada is based in Calgary.

I don't see anything wrong with bringing Scrivens and Reimer. There's always going to be a few goalies you'd rather have but I'm not upset at the decision. Scrivens has shown potential this year and Reimer can always go on a hot streak.

Reimer and Scrivens aren't bad by any stretch, especially as Canada is in a deep goaltending lull.

Brent Wallace is with the team in Europe and said he was told Drouin was unavailable. He also said that Benn and Seguin declined their invitations, which is half ridiculous.

That's too bad. I was hoping he'd be included. but good luck to our boys today in their 1st and only exhibition game..hope they can quickly shake off the rust and come together as a team. ))) Although I remain a skeptic.

Weird - I wonder whats up with that?

Here are the updated player numbers that I pieced together:

3 Ellis
4 Myers
5 Garrison
7 Bieksa A
8 Reinhart
9 Schenn
10 Turris A
12 Ward
14 Read
15 Burrows
17 Huberdeau
18 Kadri
19 Hodgson
20 Brouwer
21 Monahan
23 Chimera
25 Schieffle
26 Gudbranson
28 Coburn
29 Mackinnon

With the way MacKinnon finished the year, played in the playoffs and started off this tournament doay, is it out the question for him to be considered a top 2-3 player on this roster by the end of the event?

I think it's fairly safe to consider him a top 2-3 player on the roster right now.

The Turris/Mackinnon tandem found instant chemistry and will probably be used as the top scoring line unless they really under perform against a stiffer competition. Mackinnon was easily the best forward on the ice. I can't say enough good things about him.

Well he was the leading scorer of the players on the team for the regular season and playoffs(I think). With all the hype he's getting, I'd say he's already the star of the team, and there's no doubt he'll impress on the big ice. Very excited to see such a young Canadian team, will be interesting to see if there's more intensity than usual for them. Sometimes the established superstars seem to be more interested in a paid vacation than playing hockey.

Rielly is be #24 for the actual tournament and Kadri will be #43 for the actual tournament starting this friday

Glad that they are playing Scheifele at his natural position of C.

My wonder is MacKinnon one the best 2-3 players in the entire tournament? I haven't looked at every roster but off hand I can only name Ovechkin as better.

Depends on what you mean by 'player'. For forwards we have Jagr and Nyquist in the running as well. If we're counting goalies, there's Rinne and Bobrovski too. Also some big name KHLers that could be in the mix.

If they want to keep something along these lines, id make a few minor changes.

Nathan MacKinnon - Kyle Turris - XXX
Jonathan Huberdeau - Nazem Kadri - Troy Brouwer
Brayden Schenn - Cody Hodgson - Matt Read
Jason Chimera - Mark Scheifele - Joel Ward

I don't like Burrows and don't really want him on the 1st line. I'd rather see Monahan even though he's a lefty and a centre. Reinhart is a righty... maybe give him a chance?

Was thinking more forwards, otherwise it is tough to compare. I forgot about Jagr.
