Hey ladies and gentlemen. I've always been annoyed there's no just general Red Wing banter or discussion through the season and offseason. I thought I'd open up this thread with a video that almost got me a couple times:

There is a big "what if" bit of Wings history that I remained oblivious to until 5-6 minutes ago. Here I sit reading The Down Goes Brown History of the NHL, Chapter 12 "The Trade". Our beloved Wings were referenced as one of 3 landing spots for one of the biggest "trades" in sports history. I do one of those double takes, drop the book and starting punching the keys of the Google machine like I never have before and there's a steady stream of hits: MLive, Bleacher Report, Freep that all outlining the possibility with varying degrees of probability. My face looks like that Ted Logan "mind blown" meme. Doubt I'd change anything but I'd love to peek into that parallel universe.

A few clicks into the rabbit hole also directed me to this kid.

Just wondering if anyone here saw the top 16 right wings in NHL history on the NHL site. They listed Gordie Howe at number 13. Being a Hawks fan I don't care much for the Wings but Howe at 13? Come on.

Would the NHL figure out what the draft is going to be already? Are the Red Wings drafting 1st or 6th (we know there is no in between).

Is this the Gretzky trade?

I really don't care.
I'll say this.
Those teams in the 17-24 range? You don't get to have it both ways.
You can't bitch about losing your lottery ticket while being in a potential playoff.

So have a 3-team lottery among the bottom 7 teams.
It still means we could finish 4th, but the odds should be a lot smaller

Is this the Gretzky trade?

Yes.

And the crazy thing was... his wife wanted him to go to Detroit. For all the talk about her being an LA model and them wanting LA to further her career... the quotes from Janet Gretzky back then were about how Detroit was the choice and how they wanted it.

But Papa Gretzky said "Detroit's already done everything, you'll just be another cog in their history, make your own mark in LA" and apparently the shitty owner Peter Pocklington locked in on trading with LA and nobody else. Imagine that, you have the highest value asset of literally all time, and you don't even talk to more than one team. People here go ballistic that Ken Holland didn't talk to more than one team when it came to trading a guy like Steve Ott or certainly with dealing Gus Nyquist.

E: In researching a little more, the "Gretzky could have gone to Detroit" kind of seems like "Stamkos to Detroit". Pocklington never once offered him. They offered Grant Fuhr for $5M and players but never Gretzky. Jerry Buss, who owned the Kings then, offered $15M for Wayne in the mid 80s and they said no. His successor was the one that offered it and players again in 1988 when Pocklington had the banks start getting on his ass with Gretzky a year away from FA. So it may have been something that Gretzky thought would be interesting, but his owner never once considered it.
