I mean, I would feel better in that we tried something even if it didn't work. My main issue is we're not tanking, nor are we trying to ice the best team possible. It's just stupid.

Make sure it's in the right thread, wherever it is. Inconveniencing someone by making them skip a post is one of the worst crimes you can possibly commit on the internet.
What's the best team possible though? Are you suggesting that inserting Glass or Puljujarvi over Nieto and Acciari suddenly shifts the trajectory of the season or is this a deeper seeded "we didn't sell the farm for an all star player" type view?

The best possible team would not be icing guys who are expensive and play bad in favor of icing guys who are cheaper and play slightly less bad.

Complicated, I know.

Petts, Puljujarvi, DOC, and Rakell in-season. Rust and EK off-season. Rebuild please. Sorry if Sid's gonna pout for a week before going back to his robotic self.

Oh shit, this is technically roster discussion. A hall monitor is gonna get pissed. Nevermind--uhhh, f*** Nieto, he sucks. Also fire Sullivan.

Whew.

Bobby Ryan was the consensus number two, but obviously you want them to go Kopitar.

I tried asking Craig Patrick on Twitter but he never responded.

Whatever is listed on ESPN has Benoit Pouliot as #2:

Oh, found the TSN one:

Another for fun:

Also on a side note I'm glad CP was in charge for the 04 draft and not Ray Shero or we'd have yet another thing to all complain about.

Geno definitely the consensus number two in that draft by quite a bit. Hopefully Shero wasn't that dumb/stubborn.

Only by the end of the year. There was a lot of debate on that #2 slot leading up to that, But by the end of the season he had separated himself from the pack.

I would like to think that Shero would just go with it. But I learned a while ago that these guys often like to get way too clever for their own good and play up their own biases. Shit Ray Shero himself would prove this theorem just a few years later with his disaster draft in 2012.

For the hell of it (aka I don't want to do actual work), let's assume that they don't win the Crosby draft and settle for Bobby Ryan... They'd still suck for a bit and I'll also assume they still draft Staal. Without Crosby there'd be a lack of FA interest so no big names like Palffy, Recchi, Leclair, or Gonchar. They'd not make playoffs in 06-07 and would likely still be bottom 10. Let's just say they draft ... Sam Gagner?

So for 07-08 they'd have something like this:

Malone - Malkin - Sykora
Armstrong - Staal - Gagner
FA - Christensen - Kennedy
Ruutu - Talbot - FA
(Ryan in the AHL)

Whitney - Sydor
Orpik - Letang
Scuderi - FA
Eaton

Fleury
Conklin

Yeah, pretty sure they'd miss playoffs again. 08-09 SHOULD be better.

If anyone wants to do it with Kopitar instead of Ryan be my guest. Heck, maybe keep Morozov!

And let's be honest, they'd likely be in Kansas City or Hamilton.

I actually don't know about that. Wasn't that all revealed to be something of a bluff a few years ago? Then again the Jagr trade was SUPPOSED to be a bluff, too lol

Also yes I WOULD keep Morozov thankyouverymuch.

I mean, Gary fought hard and long to keep the Coyotes in Arizona. So maybe they wouldn't have left immediately.

I’m pretty sure that was just Mario saving face. Though, he really didn't need to. The franchise was still hemorrhaging money and no one should have begrudged him if he salvaged what he could. It would have still taken the city caving for an arena deal to get done and honestly I’m not sure that happens without the hype and optimism of Sid.

Probably fair.

I FEEL like the team had enough history and success behind it that the league might have intervened on their behalf somehow as stated above. But that's far from a guarantee and seems awfully selective based on precedent. Atlanta sure didn't get the same shot that Arizona did, for example.

Yea, it would have been really interesting to see an alternate universe where Sid ends up somewhere else.

My bet is Eric Meloche wouldn’t have been blocked from developing into a generational talent and we’re still here and have 11 straight cups.

Move aside and let Eric Meloche, Milan Kraft, Ric Jackman and Alexei Morozov cook.
