Providence Bruins General Discussion thread ‘24-‘25 II

One independent scouting agency said this about Lysell back at the 2021 Draft:

It feels like a good handful of Swedes could be written about at this juncture, but Lysell has the most impactful upside of all of the candidates and thus it is important to reiterate just how many warts this extremely talented young forward has. We saw a few highlights at the U18 Worlds that made quite the rounds through the Twitter landscape and there were a couple of high skill plays in the DEL this year that looked, well, nothing short of outstanding. There were times when he displayed incredible skill combined with the cajones to go places young men his age shouldn’t be attempting to go with the puck.

Alas, for all his sensational play, there are just so many mistakes along the way and many of them look to be born of lethargy. You just don’t know how much a case of indifference is or trying to do too much or perhaps even a false sense of security. In any case, it’s going to have to get better over time or it’s hard to believe there’ll be any NHL future for the kid. But he’s got hands, he’s got moves, he can skate really well, and he’s played a lot more hockey the past two seasons than plenty of other draft candidates. Oh, and everyone sees him going in the first round one way or another.

I think there's some confusion with reports like this and it feels like fans are always going to dismiss them until the 'mistakes born of lethargy' are pointed out with specificity.

I think we hear "lethargy" and think he's being called lazy, but then we watch him and see a guy who backchecks, who takes the puck to dangerous areas, who goes into the corners... and it seems like that report is nonsense or written by a hater.

Specifically, what is he doing that is lazy or indifferent? Where is that play? Why can't anyone point to it and say, here's an example... ?

Fwiw, I'm not saying this report is wrong or that Divver's tweets are off-base. I'm just saying... if you want to convince me that Jake O'Brien is a good defensive player, you can show me clips of him backchecking or making good reads. If you want to convicne me Phil Kessel is soft, you can give examples of him bailing on board battles so he doesn't get hit. There is so much talk of Lysell's shortcomings but not one concrete example. It's always things like "he's an independent contractor," and it's up to us to figure out whatever that means.

The criticisms are fair, but Fabian Lysell never played in the German league.

More of a roller coaster, with his best play coming down the stretch with the big club.

I don’t really buy the scratch as a punishment , the whole team looked meh in those games and it would make sense to let a young winger watch the game and take some notes over some of these vets that are just warriors for you and your season is on the brink.

If he looks disinterested and not driving plays with his feet and shiftiness in September I’d be concerned
Wait…he’s in the f***ing playoffs right now, but you’ll be concerned if he looks disinterested in training camp?
