I believe if Urbom was waived on the first day with everybody else in the league, he probably would have cleared. Maybe not, but I think the chances would have been much better. I really didn't think he would get claimed but when I saw that only 3 players were waived yesterday, I thought the chances became much greater.

WHY WHY WHYYYY are you talking about Urbom entering the draft next year? what in GODS CREATION does that have to do with anything?

so you're saying that a 23 year old would be more highly regarded than kids in high school? YOU DON'T SAY?!?!

Because it's tied to his value. As a General Manager if you have a draft pick in the third/fourth round next year you can certainly weigh your options and assess whether a shot in the dark is worth more than the reality of Urbom right now.

So it's especially important when we consider what his value is - which is the discussion. So I disagree that his value is a 5th round pick. I can see multiple teams offering a third for the kid because of the uncertainty of drafts.

That offer, though, would be contingent on a level negotiating field. I don't think Lou had that. Teams knew he was in a tight spot and were probably inclined to let Lou place him on waivers than to pay for him.

And just because you type in caps doesn't add any more merit to your point.

EXACTLY.

When the number is so low, teams would obviously pick the so-called "best of the rest".

I sure hope Lou threw the line in the water to see what teams were willing to offer for Urbom. And if a 3rd rnder was on the table, then Lou made a significant mistake in not making that deal.

I think the mistake would have been clear enough, that I don't think the scenario played out like that.

I think if we were at the deadline (or even draft day) Lou would have seen offers in the 3-4th round range. However, with his back against the wall, no team was going to offer that right now.

In a vacuum I believe 3-4th round is Urbom's value. Obviously 2nd round is pushing it and 1st round talents are far more projectable.

Urbom has certainly outperformed his draft round by even making it to the NHL. Unfortunately we're not in a vacuum and everyone knew Lou needed to make a move.

On another note it could have been that Oates, being familiar with Urbom, had his eye on him the entire time. So whether he was waived today or last week, Oates probably takes him.

I don't see why Oates would pass on Urbom a week ago and take him now.

I think the concern is when people are so confident in their opinions that they become dismissive of other opinions.

The jargong and tone on this forum is awful. Totally awful. Some people here seems to just stick around
to put other people down and mock them for their opinions.

I never thought i was going to write something like this on a internet forum.

But this sucks. :shakehead

When people make outlandish comments or statements and post them publicly, they should expect to get called out for doing so. If you are that sensitive, you shouldnt be posting here. That is what a message board is for, to debate things. Not to have everyone agree on every topic.

"Alex Urbom has had plenty of opportunities here. I guarantee you he won't amount to anything." = perfectly good opinion.

"You don't have enough information to make a determination on Urbom's career." = outlandish.

I agree but sometimes, having a different opinon can be viewed as a sign of not understanding what the mass wants you to believe.

Trust me, I know what I'm talking about :naughty:

sweet baby jesus this is getting beyond ridiculous.

you'd think Lou just threw the winning powerball ticket into the fire.

If Urbom was packaged with Volchenkov in return for a 5th round pick nobody would have been mad and the Lou is an idiot crowd would be claiming Lou is a genius instead. I don't get the drama of one of our weakest D prospects getting claimed off waivers by a team that sorely is deficient in defense while we sit here nicely filled to the gills with defense prospects that would have made it an almost guarantee that Urbom would likely die on the vine while better prospects made it into the lineup ahead of him or he just went this way eventually anyways without the roster size being the catalyst. Let's see if he even does anything before we get so indignant over losing what feels more like a $5 scratch-off than the powerball winner.

Outlandish in who's eyes? Yours?

I don't agree with you alot of the time, but I'm not telling you your opinions are outlandish, or throwing my hands up and walking away, or saying 'I'm done with you'.

That's just garbage.

again, you are posting your opinions on a PUBLIC FORUM. if people disagree with you or think that what you are saying is outlandish, they are allowed to do so. that is the point of a message board!! I don't understand how that is so hard to comprehend.

100%.

This is the reverse mentality of people who go nuts over free t shirts.

It's the notion of going anything away for free, even if that thing has almost no real value, that is pissing people off.

More accurately, Lou threw a powerball ticket into the fire without scratching it off first...which means odds are it's worthless anyway, but you never know

I can't speak for everyone else but I personally do understand the logic behind this move. I'm not all that upset about it. It sucks we lose Urbom for free, but it's not the end of the world.

I think the majority of the discussion has focused on the idea purported by some that Urbom is a free t-shirt. That he has no value.

I think that notion is disputable.

Lou Lams and Deboer want to win, not become a farm team like Edmonton

Urbom fell on the depth chart, he had to go one way or another

I don't understand this false narrative that getting claimed off waivers makes you a good player.

Is Sheldon Brookbank also a good player? Jay Leach? Tom Kostopoulos?

The only positive waiver wire pickup I can remember for us has been Ryan Carter.

Let's not forget 19 teams passed on Urbom before Washington put in a claim at 20th.

I don't think there's a narrative saying he's a good player because he was claimed. I think the complaint is, looking at this teams defensemen the Devils just let one of THEIR higher rated defensman prospects walk out the door for nothing. Just makes you wonder. I have to laugh, if Urbom getting claimed causes this kind of fury I can't wait to see what happens when reality sets in with this team this year.
