Update on ELC watch 2025

Marjala - no-brainer ELC, but does he see a path to NHL with Sabres?
Miedema - should be a yes ELC, but this is the franchise that didn't sign Hagel...
Leinonen - no-brainer ELC
Strbak - should be yes ELC, physically ready for AHL, sign him if only to crowd out Prow
Ratzlaff is signed
Poltapov - maybe 2027
von Barnekow - he re-upped with Malmo, no ELC, farewell sweet prince ...
Costantini - no ELC, maybe AHL
Huglen - no ELC, maybe AHL

Wild card is Sardarian. 6-1, 179, 6+3 in 10 games, he turns 22 in February. If he's better served to be coached in Rochester, I'd sign him in the summer.

Glotov was mentioned in another thread, I think he's aged out of ELC, but if he's PPG in KHL, 1 year $1.15 million why not, doesn't effect the cap, bury him in Rochester, give him a couple games in the NHL as a one time call-up.

Sardarian I think will get a deal. He is very under the radar, but I think he is similar to a Nadeau ECHL/AHL Tweener while they develop him.

Agreed on everyone else

The only questions I have are if Sardarian and Marjala want to come over and grind.

I think the Glotov ship has sailed. That's just me.

Sabres have 5 contract slots
None of those guys would be signed to NHL deals for this season, it would be future deals for next year with a AHL PTO, and they only have 22 contracts for next year right now. They'll have room for those guys, especially if Adams trades a few prospects to improve the roster this year, and they can walk away from a few guys currently in Rochester as well.

I took the statement as they have a lot of contracts to hand out. 5 is good. 1 or 2 gets tight 🤷

Update on ELC watch 2025

Playing devil's advocate for a moment...

Marjala - no-brainer ELC, but does he see a path to NHL with Sabres?

I suppose it's a question of it they think the scoring is translatable. How many tiny scoring line guys do they need? Where does he fit? They already have a high-skilled wisp of a player sitting almost ever game in Rochester right now with Kisakov. He isn't a bottom six fit so who of Helenius, Ostlund, Wahlberg, Miedema, Kozak, or Neuchev does he push out? That's something to look at if they retain all of these guys without trading anyone.

Miedema - should be a yes ELC, but this is the franchise that didn't sign Hagel...

It's about time. He should be getting a lot more love after how crap last season was for him.

Leinonen - no-brainer ELC

They can wait until the end of next year since European draftees have a 4-year signing window.

Strbak - should be yes ELC, physically ready for AHL, sign him if only to crowd out Prow

Prow's an AHLer and at the end of his career. That shouldn't be a consideration. Is there room on the right side for him to get reps on Rochester next season should be the consideration. I would like to see more out of him from here to the end of the season. But will a third year at MSU help or not? I'm torn.

Ratzlaff is signed
Poltapov - maybe 2027

That's not a maybe, that's a yes.

von Barnekow - he re-upped with Malmo, no ELC, farewell sweet prince ...

Love that he's big, but 1-2-3 in half an SHL season isn't really anything.

Costantini - no ELC, maybe AHL

He had a season on par to what Sardirian is doing this year but Costantini did it last year. Why is he a no and Sardirian a wild card?

Huglen - no ELC, maybe AHL

I have wondered if Huglen just stops playing after he finishes his degree. His back injury is apparently a source of constant discomfort. He's a smart player, excellent defensively, fills in at both center and wing. He is a way more complete player than most of their draftees. If he wants to continue as a pro and can deal with the bus travel with his back, he's certainly an AHL option.

Wild card is Sardarian. 6-1, 179, 6+3 in 10 games, he turns 22 in February. If he's better served to be coached in Rochester, I'd sign him in the summer.

He has another year of college eligibility. They could see if this is real and lasts over the whole season before signing another undersized scoring line player. He's also really slight.

Glotov was mentioned in another thread, I think he's aged out of ELC, but if he's PPG in KHL, 1 year $1.15 million why not, doesn't effect the cap, bury him in Rochester, give him a couple games in the NHL as a one time call-up.

He's already been in NA. I doubt he is coming back nor that he's built for NA scoring. Now as a Russian hype man? Sure. But that's not a playing position.

Also, it remains weird to not have much to seek out on a Saturday morning over coffee. Almost 7 years of having my morning java and watching pieces of games from Sweden or Finland or Czechia or Russia... and now almost nothing.

Sardaryan is a year younger than Costantini but that isn't really it either...he was drafted as a project with some serious raw skill and he seems to be figuring it out, so the growth and trajectory is there unlike with Costantini who has been up and down throughout his college career. With lesser competition, he's also at a higher PPG than Costantini. Sardaryan is a boom or bust and I'm just saying that if they would rather have him coached in Rochester next year than I'm good with an ELC for him. Is he slight? Yes he is.

Costantini and Huglen can get AHL deals if they want them, if they don't that's OK. They are both incredible long shots for a single NHL game.

The Prow comment was just a joke, I like Metsa/Strbak/Komarov on the right next season in Rochester, and maybe one of the three can show they are worthy of a call-up. Strbak is physically ready for the jump.

Marjala can be PPG in Rochester, similar to Ruotsalainen. That's nothing to sneeze at, even if he never shows he's NHL worthy. A couple years in North America might be worth a try, for him, and for organizational need and Rochester scoring, it's worth it to us as well.

As for Leinonen, I don't know if they'd rather he move to NA next season and play in Rochester with Ratzlaff, or stay in Europe. Whatever's better for his development I guess.

So...to sum up, sign Metsa!!!, and ELCs (starting summer 2025) for Marjala/Miedema/Strbak, Sardaryan can maybe transfer to a bigger program? And Leinonen, I don't know.

This takedown of Pronman's latest is pretty amusing -

It's a job too big for one human to do well and I would say it's deliberately random to generate sports rage bait clicks and conversation.
