Laval Rocket: GDT: Game FOUR- Rochester at Laval 7PM EST

Alex Barre-Boulet is terrible. Why is he playing so much geez ?! Give that ice time to the Habs top prospects like Kapanen, Xhekaj and Beck.

Other useless plugs that were terrible as well: Gignac, Dauphin, Mailloux (this guy has no future in the NHL).

Best players for Laval tonight: Roy, Engstrom, Kapanen

Vincent still favoring his useless veterans.

Watch them lose game 5. If they do, I hope Vincent is getting canned.

Well it will be interesting to see who can play an ultimate game on Sunday. One thing is for sure Rochester will jump all over sloppy play they've been the more connected team in this series in my mind.
Gignac can only "increase" his trade value from a 4th rd to a 3rd rd. Negligble swings: hence AHL lifer

Note that Dobes struggled alot early on before finding his mojo. Fowler had a couple of great games right off the bat before this tough one. He surely is slightly undersized for the position, but technically and athletically he is a great goaltending prospect. Its only 1 game guys...
Other than Redenbacher, Beck, Fowler and maybe Engstrom, I don’t see any other future Habs players

I’m not seeing a “lot of future Habs”, overhyped prospects yes…
Apparently, the Habs will be full of all the middling prospects we roster in the farm:
Beck
Kaps
Roy
Mailloux
Xhekaj

These guys can be picked up either on waivers, or can be signed for $1m x 4yrs. If the need arises. The league is full of them, everywhere.

Blue Chip prospects: we have 3.
1- Reinbacher
2- Hage
3- Fowler

These are the only players who can actually make a difference to the lineup if they hit.

Gotta give credit to teams like Vegas, they give 0 effs about middling prospects, rather they wait until they come on the market, let other teams develop them.

End of the day, the ONLY prospects that truly mean anything are the Blue Chippers. The rest are nice to have at best to create a legit system.

Don't get too excited with the Farm if they only win when the career AHLers perform.

Xheakaj and Davidson for sure. Davidson looks like Anderson only he actually has hockey sense.
And Anderson is a 4th liner.. unless Davidson can pound bodies into the boards, what makes him CH worthy?

Ill admit Xhekaj "might" be able to rise to blue chip category.. itll be interesting.. Beck has been a total let down this year. Just your total vanilla do everything technically "right" type of player, but nothing else. Lots of these guys on every farm.

Overall, it was a poor game by Laval as they looked unprepared, played loose undisciplined hockey and largely handled the puck all night like it was a grenade. Again, as I said many times here over the years, one has to be careful to not overreact to the good games or the bad games. Regrettably, and clearly, this was a bad game.

As for our prospects these are my quick observations.

Despite what some have written, I think Beck played mediocrely. While he flashed his speed in spurts, he didn't drive the play consistently. Beck did play physically delivering a number of heavy checks. The worrisome thing is that since he has returned from his call up to the Canadiens, there is a lack of consistency to this fine prospect's game.

Roy had his brief moments but his lack of speed/quickness was apparent tonight. Also, Roy, who usually has excellent vision, made numerous bad decisions (particularly on the power play) where his passes were off the mark or were easily intercepted. I really doubt that Roy has a future on the Canadiens or has any true value on the trade market.

Other than some good board work on the forecheck and an occasional rush, Florian Xhekaj, was largely a non-factor tonight. Those here who have already pencilled in Florian to the Canadiens' 4th line next year may have to re-assess their projections.

Farrell, who had a couple of rushes, including one where he beat an opposing defence wide in the third period and almost scored was largely a non--factor in this game.

I thought Davidson was one of Laval's better forwards as he never took a shift off, drove to the net hard, was physical, had several good scoring chances , was around the puck all night and forechecked with purpose. This kid will make the NHL on his constant motor and high compete level alone.

In my opinion, from the second period on, Tuch was one of Laval's best forwards. Tuch played with speed, physicality, forechecked hard every shift, had a number of scoring chances including a breakaway from center ice. Tuch easily projects a bottom 6 forward at the next level and should push to make the Canadiens next fall unless Hughes trades him in the offseason. I could see a team asking for him in any deal Hughes tries to consummate at the upcoming draft. He is one of Montreal's more marketable assets.

Kapanen continued to flash NHL potential displaying good speed, vision, a physical edge and surprising effectiveness on face-offs. I think Kapanen, like Tuch, will be an asset that other teams will be interested in acquiring in any deal Hughes tries to negotiate this off season.

Other than Engstrom, the other three young Laval defencemen had bad to non-descript games. There is no way to soft peddle it, but Mailloux was horrible. He fumbled the puck all game long, turned over the puck repeatedly (which directly resulted in Rochester's second goal), made poor decisions in all zones of the ice and clearly showed that he is unable to effectively transport the puck at the AHL level. When the team needed a push from the back end trailing by 3 goals, Mailloux, unlike Engstrom, couldn't supply that dynamic skating from the back end. He made one excellent offence play when he jumped into an open area in the offensive zone creating a 2 on 1 with Davidson. But it wasn't as a result of his carrying the puck but anticipating the play and skating into open zone and making himself available for a pass. Sound like a forward?

Engstrom was Laval's most dynamic player in the game. He made two fabulous rushes, one of which directly led to Laval's only goal, walked the offensive blueline on a number of occasions and broke up a couple of 2 on 1's. Of all Laval defencemen, I believe Engstrom's elite skating ability makes him the defenceman with the highest upside. No player on Laval, defenceman or forward, can match Engstrom's ability to skate with the puck. It will be interesting to see how he fares at the Canadiens' camp next fall. If he gets a bit stronger, it would not shock me if he makes the team. Such is the level of this kid's skating.

Both Reinbacher and Trudeau had middling games. They both kept their errors with the puck to a minimum and showed enough mobility to generally escape forecheck pressure and to close the gap in the defensive zone. Trudeau was the more physical of the two. But neither player was able to provide the offensive push that the team desperately needed as they quickly fell behind in the game. That inability says a lot, at least to this writer, as to these players' true potential.

I can book a flight to the moon for PV. Damn what a awful 2 weeks of him.

Fowler looks so calm and poised but it’s worrisome seeing so many pucks appear to go right through him from the point.

Dobes is so sporadic in the net, almost makes himself look smaller with how much he loses his net and flops around.
Fowler right now plays smaller than his size indicates. And that's an issue.

No, its not an issue.

He's just starting his pro career, if that continues 3-4 years from now, then sure.

Who cares about his performance last night, I know we all love to get wrapped up in results but the goal at the AHL level is development.

And whether Fowler is winning or losing, he's playing and gaining experience.

Process > Results.

True. His appearance is a lot like Anderson. But he plays like a Gallagher with more hockey sense. And he has far more offensive ability than Anderson.

He has more offensive ability as far as his hands, release and IQ are conserned but he is a poor skater and that is /has always been the real question mark with Davidson. He will need very good NHL relative IQ to offset his skating deficiencies.

Anderson is such a vastly superior skater to Davidson it may prove to be enough to make him a superior offensive player.

I love Davidson's game so I am definitely cheering for him to make it. He along with Florian and Tuch may prove to be very valuable components of Montreal lineups that are able to achieve playoff success in the relatively near future.

i watched the highlights and didn't even know Reinbacher was playing , they never showed him at all. Sad.

Mailloux drives me nuts. Would be bleeding from the ears if his brain farted any harder.

Imo he needs at the very least start another year in Laval as Reinbacher is more pro ready despite some of the rust from having missed so much time. They may very well both start in Laval but Mailloux needs to continue to improve his defensive game as well as needing to be more consistent with his reads in all 3 zones.

He feels like a very possible trade candidate as a young toolsy RHD with size and could very well be packaged in a deal to acquire a 2C or to move up considerably in the draft. I am ok with continuing to develop him or trading him for the right asset.

ABB is playing because he's both the regular season and playoff points leader. Same thing with Dauphin (2nd RS, tied 1st po). Without them, Laval would be golfing right now.

Canning a coach of the year candidate. Great evaluation.

I don't think there's anything dumb about starting the goalie who has barely lost in 2025. Also Primeau's 2 and 0 this series.

I think there's a lot dumb not starting a guy who just had effectively back to back shut outs. Winning every game in the previous series to progress.

On one of the goals where M came under pressure and he backed up....his first option was to throw it up the ice but because there were two forwards on him, it took that away. Now the only other option is to ring it around the boards but there was no one there. Passing to the center is verboten.

So in the end he kept it too long and lost posession.

The fun part of watching a play closely is that it's never that simple. Mistakes look like they happen in isolation but more often then not, it's a combination of factors.

Yes, 100% on M for not moving the puck quickly down the boards even if he lost possession. Shoulda...coulda...but didn’t.

Also give credit to the opposition for putting pressure on him in a vulnerable spot.

Also blame his partner for not giving him an option.

It is what it is....a bad game where we were outhustled and nothing worked.

Not disagreeing but the entire team was also to blame for not rising our compete level.
They outhustled us and put us on our heels but then, we should off rose and beat them at that..but didnt.

We better come out firing on all cylinders for 60 minutes or we're going bowling for the summer...
