GDT: Canada vs. Germany 20:05

I'm rooting for Ger (after USA of course) but bad penalties and lack of offense are killing them. Tons of heart and effort, but thats not going to get it done against Canada.
 
McCabe was weak, but I still thought Regehr has been just as bad through 2 games.

Are you talking about the same Bryan McCabe who has 0 points and is a team worst -2 when Team Canada's has had only 3 goals scored on them?

And are you talking about the same Robyn Regehr who has 1 points and is a team high +3?

McCabe flat out sucks. I am so glad he doesn't play on my NHL team.
 
Review the goals. The goal he was on for today he had taken his man, despite Cole's announcing. He followed the point man down low and Sakic left his man up top. Regehr hasn't been directly involved in any of the goals scored. Neither have impressed me.

I agree with SwissA...that Felski was a liability all night long. I still don´t see why he´s been chosen over a player like Ullmann rosterwise.
Felski hasn´t lived up to expectations about everytime he´s been on the national team, but aside from that i´m pretty satisfied with the selction of the team and the effort they´re putting in.
I´ve been way too critical with Krupp i´d have to admit.

Love Ullmann i thought he was not here because he is injured. If he is healthy how can he not be here?

The guy who scored was McCabe's guy. If you look closely, you will see McCabe standing out to the left of the play covering air, just standing there. (maybe he thought he was playing the point for Germany). Couple that with the terrible pass at the blueline and some other poor plays and he just sticks out. By far the worst Canada on the ice. Can we still fly Phaneuf over?
 
Look closely, the D-man is there on the halfboards with him. Blake's got the guy behind the net, other D-man has a man on the side, Sakic's in the slot covering nobody. I love Joe, and McCabe's looked like crap, but there isn't a point in making him seem worse, he's doing it on his own. McCabe came out of the box and Germany was in a box, he went towards the far D-man who pinched in and stayed with him. The D never came back to his original point position. Sakic played it like a 4 on 3, instead of a 4 on 4, he probably wasn't aware the penalty was over and who McCabe had grabbed.

I haven't for a moment said he hasn't looked bad, I'm just saying I think Regehr's looked pretty weak as well. The Italy goal all falls on McCabe, but this one isn't his fault. I'd love a replay if someone can must'er it up.
 
Yea, McCabe had a bad game. But geeze... Cut the guy some slack, people. I could swear if Joe Sakic were a Leaf his entire career, he'd be hated.

Just use the Mats Sundin thread for example. People said they hated him just because he was a Leaf...

Grow up people. Obviously TEAM CANADA saw something in McCabe that they liked. Now, I doubt any of you have the credentials to match Mr. Gretzky and Co.
 
McCabe/Redden has potential to be DEADLY on the powerplay.

And the damn announcers couldn't even get the names right in other sports. Jeff Bootle...what a guy.

EDIT: While McCabe wears a red maple leaf, i refuse to bag on him, and continue to believe that he'll blast a one-timer on the PP in the next game.

Nice to see Quinn pair the best defenseman with the worst defenseman. It will help cover McCabe up a bit.

What? Regehr setup Gagne on his goal, direct outlet pass.

But he's a defensive defenceman for Christ's sake! He's not there to score goals, he's there to add to his +3+/-.

Have you ever seen Regehr play until today? Good lord.
 
Regehr, I am willing to eat crow on. I thought he would struggle with the new rules, and his cup run was a mirage.

Clearly, Calgary struggled without him, and he is a dominant physical defensive presence, who can play well with the speed of the new game and makes a nice first pass.

Top 5 defensive defenseman, maybe even top 3.
 
So based on the opinions of the lemmings of this board who think because McCabe is -2 and should be kicked off the team, I guess they would also argue that Sakic who despite having three points and is also -1 should also be booted off and Shane Doan is the best hockey player in Canada since he leads the team in goals, points and shooting percentage. The point is I think most of you are really unfairly unloading on McCabe (mainly because he is a Leaf) :deadhorse

I don't think too many of you are really being honest so I'll try. After the first 2 games I haven't seen anyone's play really put team Canada in jeopardy of not winning this whole thinkg with the exception of Marty Brodeur (but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because the whole team was going through the motions versus Italy) No one player has really stood out to be the team leader but I would say that only Bertuzzi has really looked sharp compared to everyone else.

On Defence I'd say that overall they have been great, in total control but once again the competition wasn't strong. I've seen some equally bad passes and plays from not only McCabe but Pronger, Rheger and Foote. Redden hasn't looked as good as he has in Ottawa but neither has anyone else on the defence looked really strong so It could be a feeling out thing with new partners. I think comfort level with a defensive partner is really important and it should improve with each game. :soap:

Overall we should all really think of these last 2 games as practice for this team to feel each other out and determine how to play with one another so I'm not going to judge anyones performance based on these 2 games.

I think so. But it doesn't matter too much, when you can see the NHL on Free-TV after the Olympics.

No NHL, no NFL, no NBA, no NCAA...It kinds sucks when you know, how good things could be (NBC, TNT, ABC, ESPN (2)...etc.)

Regehr is a +7 for Calgary, and was a +14 last year. McCabe is a +2 this year with obviously many more points.

In my opinion, McCabe is a good offensive defenseman with a great shot, however, in the defensive zone, he is well below average. Also, when picking for Team Canada, I do no believe there is any reason for picking a powerplay specialist for the team when you have players like Pronger, Blake, and Redden who can do that plus play in the defensive zone as well.

For the people defending McCabe saying its an anti-Leaf bias, I would be willing to guarantee that if McCabe played for any other team in the NHL you would want him off the team as well.

Edit: I know you were referring simply to the two Canadian games and not the NHL season, however I brought the stats in to back up my opinion that McCabe is not the +/- player that Regehr is.

It was EazyB97 who said that Regehr was just as bad as McCabe over the past two games, not me. Stats and the games themselves suggest otherwise, Regehr was not responsible for a single goal against, whereas McCabe was responsible for two of the three goals Team Canada has allowed. Regehr, Foote and Blake have been Team Canada's best defenceman thus far -- Pronger has been shaky, especially his skating, but overall solid -- Redden has really been struggling, but it doesn't help when he gets played on a pairing with McCabe.

Again, take it up with EazyB97, who isthe one who made the ridiculous statement in the first place.

Since he's only been in on one of the goals, his +/- doesn't reflect much to me. I am watching his gap, foot speed, and positional play. He's made mistakes that were covered up by weak opponents. At this point +/- doesn't mean much to me as we haven't faced a decent opponent. We'll see what happens when we play the stronger teams. If I am wrong, I'll have no problem admitting it. To this point, Regehrs stats are good, but I haven't been impressed by his play.

I don't doubt for a second Regehr is a great D-man in the NHL, I've seen him play numerous times, he definately is. What I am saying is that as a defensive D-man, he hasn't looked as solid as I would like. I've come to expect lapses and screw ups from McCabe. He isn't playing well, that's pretty obvious. He also hasn't gotten many oppurtunities to do what he does, score. So it's a case of expectations for me. Anyone who didn't expect McCabe to at least be similar to this, hasn't seen him play. Regehr has scared me a few times with his lack of foot speed and being out of position a bit. He seems to be trying too hard out there. This is all in the 2 games we've seen and it can definately change, and to be honest, I hope it does. As a Canadian, I want everyone to play their best.

Look at the stats. There are only 4 players with over 28 minutes per game.

Lidstrom +6
Pronger +4
McCabe +2
Kaberle -2

Only three of them are plus players.
