Only saw the third. Had good pace. It's not in this team's best interests to play an open brand of hockey. As much as I hate boring hockey, it's the only way this team is going to win.

Blowing a two-goal lead is always unacceptable, and that play by Horvat cannot happen.

From the bit I saw of Barzal, he played with some intensity. I'll give him that. Hopefully this spurs him on.

Dobson looked assertive, in both zones. Would've liked him to take the wrister on that point-blank chance. Anyway, his decisiveness is encouraging.

They dont play 3 on 3 in playoffs.
This was a typical Islander collapse when they went into “defensive” mode halfway in the third.

Lambert probably advised the team from the bench at 2-0 “remember, the winning move is not to play”

No they didnt. They gave up the 1st goal because of an awful play by Buldoc followed by an awful play by Aho. The 2nd goal was kind of a fluke.

At the moment it just feels like this team isn't capable of maintaining its best level for long enough,
They can compete and fight, but they have those patches where they just fall apart.
In this case that patch in third and then OT.
They earned trust under Trotz, have not done so under Lane.

I think Horvat's screwup was more than anything a screwup handling the puck. He tried to get the puck under control and didn't, then it started bouncing and that was that. In retrospect he should have let it go a bit longer before trying to gather it in. Frustrating ending.

Ct.
One thing is for sure, we are not lock down D in the 3rd.... Way too loose for my liking....
And with turnovers from for Forwards, it is an entire team thing.

Assuming this team is in the thick of it come trade deadline, Lou needs to upgrade the defense. Aho and Buldoc cant be playing every night.
If bolduc cannot handle a regular shift the isles need to find someone who can. I don’t know what he can or can’t do but his minutes suggest the coaches don’t trust him. Find someone they can especially if Mayfield is still out. His nice time per game even for a few more games is not sustainable for anyone.

I wish we had an Andy Greene / Denis Seidenberg type. This team desperately needs that guy
They were different players, but I think I know what you mean. A pretty solid, boring, vet guy who won't cost much and who is reliable when called upon. If we have to go through some growing pains with Aho or Bolduc that's fine if there's a payoff after they develop. But having both of them in the lineup is not ideal, and while I hold out hope for Bolduc down the line I'm not sure Aho will be more than a somewhat higher level version of what we see now.

Saw more positives than negatives this game on the whole. Mayfield coming back will help quite a bit whenever that occurs, and Horvat is looking stronger game by game. Still a lot not to like, but it's better than some of the earlier games this season.

He can't wait that long. Even when Mayfield comes back Aho is still a weak link.

In the meantime, send down Bolduc and call up Hutton. He's at least defensively sound.

Don't bother. He spent paragraph after paragraph in another GDT telling me he wants the players to play more instinctive and for the defense to jump up in the play, to be more aggressive. Both of the first goals were direct results of defensemen being aggressive. The first was Bolduc stepping up outside the blue line and whiffing, leading to a rush against. The second was Dobson creating offense in the offensive zone, trying a risky cross ice pass that was picked off an turned up the ice.

What actually happened doesn't matter to him because if the Islanders lose it's always because of the defensive shell. If they win it's because they finally did what he wanted and changed their system.

What I am noticing is that they’re finally starting to figure out the power play. Even if they don’t score, they’re attempting to generate passes instead of playing hot potato.

I only saw it the once but it looked like he didn't control it like you're saying and then tried to push it back to Dobson but just couldn't get enough on it. Unfortunate play.
